NFL Rumors / Signings / Cuts / Trades (Non-Jets)

Dolphins signed CB Alterraun Verner, formerly of the Bucs.

Signed to big money by the Bucs in 2014, Verner struggled his way into a smaller and smaller role, eventually playing just 241 snaps last season. Still only 28, he'll likely push Bobby McCain for slot-defender snaps. That is, if Verner makes the team. There's a reason Verner languished on the open market for over five months.

If the Jets are going to overpay anybody in FA, I would rather it be a 26 year old OLBer with production than a QB who's an unknown

Well, the Jets got McCown, you knew the Browns were gonna have to retaliate.

Jets bring in veteran guard Orlando Franklin for visit, report says

The Jets brought veteran free-agent lineman Orlando Franklin in for a visit Tuesday, according to multiple reports. ESPN first reported the news.

Franklin, 29, was originally selected by the Broncos in the second round of the 2011 draft. He spent the first four years of his career with the team, then signed a five-year deal with the Chargers in 2015. L.A. released Franklin in May, which saved $2.8 million in salary cap space.

Last season, Franklin started 16 games. PFF rated him their No. 66 guard out of 72 qualifying players

The Jets starting offensive line is pretty much set. Free-agent Kelvin Beachum will start at left tackle, while James Carpenter and Brian Winters man the guard positions. Wesley Johnson figures to be the center, while Brandon Shell and Brent Qvale compete at right tackle.

Jets with most fantasy football value

But that doesn't mean the Jets can't use Franklin. Behind their starters, there isn't much in terms of proven depth. Franklin has 89 starts since 2011, and has experience playing both guard and tackle.

The Jets report to training camp on July 28, and will hold their first practice the next day.

Jets get visit from Chargers’ $36 million castoff

Free-agent guard Orlando Franklin visited the Jets on Tuesday, according to a source.

Franklin spent the past two years with the Chargers, who signed him to a five-year, $36.5 million contract in 2015. San Diego released him in May. The Jets had interest in the 29-year-old two years ago when he was a free agent, but they ultimately signed James Carpenter.

The Jets are set at guard with starters Carpenter and Brian Winters, but could use some depth on the offensive line. Franklin would have to come cheap, though. It is unlikely the Jets would pay more than the veteran minimum.

Well damn, I guess we made the right choice at that point in time didn't we? Although given the problems both our starters had before Steve Marshall came along maybe he would have turned out better with us. Our O-line coach might be the most underrated part of the team, though if he gets a good amount out of Wes Johnson people should be giving him all the credit in the world.

Eagles released G/T Allen Barbre.

A coaches pet from the Chip Kelly regime, Barbre signed a new multi-year deal in June 2014 but fell out of favor under coach Doug Pederson. Barbre was given permission to seek a trade back in March but didn't find any takers. The release saves the Eagles $2.1 million against the cap. 33-year-old Barbre can play both guard spots and right tackle and has made 36 career starts. Isaac Seumalo opened Eagles camp as the starting left guard. Philly has plenty of line depth.

That's an interesting proposition, in theory anyway: If you HAD to choose, either or, Who would you rather have GOING INTO the Season Opener as your Starting QB: Ryan Mallett or Josh McCown?

I'd take McCown.

Didn't know that. Still wouldn't consider it to be on Joe Mixon's level which I guess was my main point.

Joe Mixon is going to have a beast year.

Ryan Fitzpatrick should have held out he could be starting for the Ravens.

Very true.

If a team is desperate enough you don't think they would dial up Tampa for Fitzpatrick's game manager skill set at $3M for a 1 year rental? I'd think so.

I agree.

He's also a woman beating piece of sh*t who I won't shed a tear for should his career end tomorrow.  Kudos to every team that passed on that scumbag.

But how would Jameis perform without a solid mentor behind him? ;-)

(Given the "Curse of Fitz" Jameis might be glad to see him gone PDQ ...)

Marcus Murphy - RB - Jets

Jets claimed KR/RB Marcus Murphy off waivers from the Saints.

The Jets are adding a body to their kick return competition. Murphy was dynamic in the SEC, but never made any noise in New Orleans, and struggled with fumbles.

The Jets claimed former Saints RB Marcus Murphy on waivers. Like Lucky Whitehead, whom they picked up Wednesday, Murphy returns punts and kickoffs. There will be a bunch of these moves in the coming weeks, as the Jets churn the bottom of the roster. To make room for Murphy, they waived RB Brandon Wilds.

Saints signed OG Orlando Franklin to a one-year contract.

Franklin's addition gives the Saints options as they mix and match in LT Terron Armstead's (shoulder) absence. Franklin was a 16-game starter for the Chargers last season after missing six games in 2015. His presence gives the Saints the option of kicking LG Andrus Peat outside to tackle while Armstead is sidelined. Right now, first-rounder Ryan Ramczyk is penciled in.

Obviously Morton is familiar w/him

Pre-2015 Draft:

Draft Projection

Round 7 or priority free agent

NFL Comparison

Dexter McCluster

Bottom Line

All-purpose running back with a lean frame and a big heart. Showed consistency of effort and production during his time at Missouri. His value as a runner is limited due to his size, but he has the potential to become a legitimate target out of the backfield and might warrant some reps in camp as a slot receiver. Murphy can step in and immediately challenge for the top spot as a kickoff and/or punt returner.
