Short of adding the next Ed Reed and Brian Dawkins to play together, I just don't think we made the right decisions towards building a contender. I can say that now, regardless of how they pan out. Again, I'm not sure creating a super-unit at safety is a good use of resources, even if we assume that's what we've created.

I'd have traded down, even if I couldn't get perfect value, just to add more players to a roster severely depleted of talent. It's the doubling down on two safeties, both of which aren't known for their coverage skills, that I think is philosophically problematic. And Best Available is a favorite among people talking about the draft, but just because everyone loves ranked lists, doesn't mean reality works like that. How much better is Mayes than the guy on your list right after him, and how much worse is he than the guy right after him? I think grades, or groups, are more realistic. The point being, I'm willing to bet there was a similarly ranked player available that might have been a better value to this franchise with that pick. Or, again, they could have traded down there, and added another 2 next year. I am also in the Suck for Sam bandwagon (although I hold out hope for Hack). Trading down would have been fine, because we could have landed Howard about 10 picks later. But if they had Adams ranked way higher than Howard, then I can't really fault them. But Adams better be "Leonard Williams good" or else it will look foolish. The same with Maye. I don't like going safety-safety but all will be forgotten if Adams/Maye turn out to be studs for the next 10 years.

dbatesman
1 hour ago, HessStation said: Off the cuff I would agree but when you take a closer look at Super Bowl winning teams, on everyone there's pretty much an All-Pro caliber Safety on the roster. McCourty, Ward, Thomas, Reed, Rolle, Polamalu, Woodson, Sanders, Lynch, Harrison, Butler, Woodson, Lott.... This is kind of my point though. All of those teams also had studs at at least two and often more of the following positions: QB, LT, WR1, CB1, EDGE. So in a vacuum, sure, Adams is great. In a vacuum, even Maye is perfectly fine. But we're not in a vacuum. We're going into year three of this regime and have nothing--absolutely nothing--at any of those positions.

I'd have preferred both of the Florida CB's who went in the 2nd round as opposed to a Pryor/Miles clone with a little more speed. Dont like them, Sydney Jones? Seems to me, that CB is a high value position which happens to be something the Jets could use. The Broncos took Demarcus Walker, who I like a lot and they're pretty good at drafting pass rushers. If Demarcus Walker adds to an already insane pass rush for the Broncos, that will be a stinger too.
