Takeaway on Sam Darnold vs Josh Rosen: As a pure passer, Rosen is ahead of Darnold. Rosen made some crazy throws that had scouts buzzing. Darnold can do things that Rosen can't — ie making plays with his feet. Both made critical errors in scoring territory but their NFL traits were obvious. It'll be fascinating if both players declare for the draft.

Grading the quarterback play for the Jets

At 38 years old, Josh McCown is having a career year, and is the main reason why the Jets have four wins. With a 69 percent completion rate, McCown might have played his way into the team's 2018 plans.

Jets QB Josh McCown will have surgery on his fractured left hand and will miss the last three games, the team announced. Bryce Petty is the new starter, Christian Hackenberg is the No. 2 and an emergency arm could be added this week. Just when you thought the Jets could make it through an entire season without a quarterback calamity ...

The Jets made it official, placing QB Josh McCown (fractured left hand) on injured reserve. They filled the roster spot by activating RB Akeem Judd from the practice squad. They signed former Wisconsin QB Joel Stave to the practice squad, giving them a third arm at practice. Stave was an undrafted free agent in 2016. He has been on four different NFL rosters, most recently the Redskins (practice squad).

New Jets QB Bryce Petty believes he's been "trending upward" the last two years, but he's not looking at Sunday as an individual audition. He's thinking about team goals. He said his goal is to play well "for these guys in the locker room, it's for Josh (McCown). He set a standard as to how to be a professional, how to be a quarterback." McCown underwent surgery Tuesday on his fractured left hand.

Jets OC John Morton offers a candid response on why they kept running the ball in the fourth quarter at Denver: "We didn't have a chance." They were down, 23-0, with under 12 minutes to play and their starter, Josh McCown, was out.

Jets QB Bryce Petty struggled against the Saints' standard rush. He was 7-for-21 for 62 yards and two interceptions against four or fewer pass rushers, per ESPN Stats & Information — the third-worst completion percentage on such throws this season. He had four batted passes by Cameron Jordan, tied for the most by any player in the last 10 seasons.

Jets OC John Morton gave his assessment of Bryce Petty last week: Good job with checks (run and pass). Made good decisions. A little too quick with some throws. Must be more accurate in the red zone. Avoid tipped passes at the line; he said that cost them about four completions. Must clean up footwork on 3-, 5- and 7-step drops.
