First there came the announcement that they were cutting longtime middle linebacker David Harris: and then later on this afternoon came reports that veteran wide receiver Eric Decker is being cut: Here is a live image of Jets headquarters in New Jersey: And here's a preview of the New York Jets' 2017 season: Now, the Jets have seldom acted with any sort of thoughtfulness or logic, but this series of moves would lead a casual observer to conclude that the Jets have already given up on the 2017 campaign and are trying to get the top overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, most likely to land one of the top quarterbacks available. Sam Darnold of USC or his crosstown rival Josh Rosen of UCLA would seem the likely targets. But this leads me to believe the Jets will draft a tight end. The silver lining here for the Raider Nation is twofold. Firstly, another middle linebacker has just come available. Not that David Harris would come cheaply- initial reports were that he wanted more money than the Jets were willing to pay, especially with Darron Lee as a proimising second-year player. But perhaps on a one-year deal, Harris would make sense for Oakland and would give Marquel Lee time to develop. PFF rates Harris as an excellent coverage linebacker. Furthermore, Eric Decker has been a thorn in Oakland's side since he was drafted by the Broncos out of Minnesota in 2010. If the Raiders aren't interested in signing him as a potential slot guy, hopefully some other team we don't play will sign him so we never have to see him again. The other part of the silver lining for the Raiders is that they play the Jets at home in Week 2 on Sunday, September 17. The release of these two players would seem to bode well for a dominant Raiders victory. So what do you think, Nation? Should Oakland look to pick up the Jets' sloppy seconds? The only position the Raiders are looking to bring in more competition is for is Middle Lb . ( Delrio has let it be known he Wants more options there) David Harris while not exactly what they are looking for ( ideally they want two inside lb's ( MLB, Wlb)who can cover - which isn't Harris strength) . Still I could see the Raiders bringing him in to mentor their young inside lb's Cory James , and Marquel Lee .( both could learn a lot from Harris ) You want a proven veteran MLB - Qbing your defense, than two inexperience guys. David Harris would play the first two downs, and leave on obvious passing downs. The Raiders invested a lot more of their Fa money on the offense , than on the defense. They have a very young defense that been built through the draft. ( could use some veteran presence on that side of the ball). Whether it David Harris , Navorro Bowman( if cut) , or another Lb . The Raiders will bring in a veteran MLB at some point to add to the competition . The Raiders I don't see bringing in anyone on offense.( I think they like what they have on that side of the ball). You are making more out of one Raider fan perspective on the Jets . How many Jet games do you think he saw them play last year. ( if he did he would know Harris is terrible in coverage) . The Raiders will get an experience MLB at some point whether that's David Harris or someone else.( still most pressing need that has to be addressed before the season). When you finally get a franchise QB a fan base suddenly gets injected with confidence, arrogance, and cockiness. Hopefully one day us Jets fans will get that injection. David Harris is an old soldier who has proven by his play that the new NFL has passed him by . Eric Decker didn't contribute much to any of the Jets wins from last year and while still a very capable receiver had no place on this rebuilding team . Due to these cuts, the narrative is that the Jets have thrown in the towel on the 2017 season . My question is what exactly have the Jets lost that would have made a significant difference in the outcome of the 2017 season ? IMO, every single player cut by the Jets should have been done so long ago, but their salary cap hits made it impossible . I look at the Jets and I see a young hungry team that only the front office and coaching staff can prevent from doing well because they have some preconceive plan for the long term future . I can't wait to see how this 2017 season plays out and I only hope the front office and coaching staff remember the words of Herman Edwards . " You play to win the Game ". But they sure need help at Linebacker. That's the essential kernel of truth in the article in the OP. Whether that's best served by them picking up Harris? I'm not so sure about that. So the Jets went from not losing $1.8M by trading Pryor (who would have been cut and resulted in $1.8M in Dead $) to the Browns for D.Davis' $3.8M salary which was not guaranteed. You figure Jets cut Davis and VOILA! Dead $ turned into saving Cap Space. Yet, we didn't immediately cut Davis, so it seemed it resulted in $2M in EXTRA salary since he's still on the roster. Yet Davis permitted them to cut Harris' $6.5M after #52 didn't back down. They traded for Demario to hedge against Harris, and after OTAs and the contract-talks breakdown, Davis - in the FO's eyes - can yield the same production at 1/2 the cost. So in the end, what would have been $1.8M in dead money by cutting (all indications were it was certain if no trade occurred) Pryor resulted into a NET $2.7M SAVINGS with the subsequent transactions that occurred w/the MLB position. If you want to put stock in that graph, the Jets - in theory - "IMPROVED" and got younger/cheaper at the MLB position WHILE recouping $2.7M in cap space which will most likely be rolled over to next year's projected $80M+ in 2018 Cap Space. Augustiniak Posted June 7, 2017 Share Posted June 7, 2017 for all the media whining about how bad the jets are going to be b/c they got rid of all these players - look at how they've fared. revis, no team. mangold, no team. fitz took a while to land behind a firmly entrenched starter, and that only happened b/c the bears paid a buttload of $ to glennon. harris may retire. decker now has an injury-prone label. clady, free agent. brick retired last year. pryor was traded for endzone paint. the only impact player who was a vet was marshall and even he is declining.
