I agree but not in the same way. Corey Davis isn't going to salvage Hackenberg. Hack is already awful. He should be battling Petty for QB3. Not McCown for QB1. I really like the Jamal Adams pick but this season would have a very different outlook if they had drafted Deshaun Watson or Pat Mahomes.

We'd have actual hope for the future. They could lose games and a legitimate player would be developing.

The Jets need to draft more QBs. Like Bill Walsh said every year. instead of "Developing' non-prospects like Clemens, Geno and now Hack.

The offense should look different with Mccown in there but it doesn't - it sucks regardless.  This speaks more to the sorry state of the offense than it does about the qbs.  All the qbs may suck, quite possible.  But it'd difficult to see when the offense has all of one former first round pick, it is way overmatched to a man.

Marcus Maye scored a TD last night if this helps your worry about scoring.

If he was legit he'd make the players around him better. That's what FQbs do.

Total myth.

A QB can do only so much.  No one can make a WR who runs the wrong routes, can't make the right read, can't recognize coverages etc into a good player.  A QB can make a good, talented player better though.  No one knows that we have anyone outside of Enunwa who fits that description.

Just to make it worse the entire unit is devoid of talent.  And he's basically a rookie, trying to learn the game while a handful of fans blame him for not elevating the play of a talentless unit.  To blame Hack for not bringing out the best in this unit is total BS

They can certainly help early in a qb's career.  The giants thought tiki would help groom Eli.

WR's are either open or not.

If they're open, it's 100% on Hack.

If they're not, it's 100% on Hack to pick another receiver to throw to, or to throw it away.

Hack's 2017 season in on Hack.  Not his WR's.  This Geno'esque pre-season excuse making, yet again, is sickening.  Don't we fans ever learn?

Actually it sounds like the line is as concerning as the qb/WRs.

What we are seeing is the product of having head coaches exclusively from the Defensive side of the ball for over 20 years, all of whom were determined to build "their" defenses by emphasising drafting "their kind of guys" to play the defense they were successful with at their previous team as a DC before getting the Jets job. (Parcells is the outlier, but still a "defense" guy... Followed by Groh, Herm, Mangini, Ryan, Bowles).

Meanwhile, the entire Offense gets neglected. And the only high picks on Offense the Jets selected over the last 10+ years have retired (Brick), been released (Mangold), or simply imploded (Sanchez).

Now we have an offense made up of young, later round picks, street free agents, and cheap FA pickups.

And that's the environment our NEXT young QB will walk into.

Whoever the Jets draft next year, theyre already set up to fail. Lather, rinse, repeat....

There is only 1 former first round pick on the entire offense, a guard, carpenter.  One.  Show me any other team that has even 3?

Jets fans at MetLife Stadium sat and looked on in fear last night, as the team’s number one wide receiver, Quincy Enunwa lay motionless on the turf just moments after what appeared to be just another incomplete pass.  That is, until Enunwa fell forward, landing on his face, appeared to be unable to get up.  Team trainers rushed to Enunwa’s side and spoke to him for what seemed like forever, but was realistically a few minutes.

Eventually, Enunwa would rise to a kneeling position before then standing up and slowly walking off to a cheering MetLife Stadium, back to the trainers room under his own power.

Team trainers attend to a laid out Quincy Enunwa.

As Enunwa walked off, there was a sense of relief, but the realization that an injury to their number one receiver would mean that any potential growth for the team’s signal callers could be stunted even further as the depleted receiving corps would be without their most experienced pass catcher, thanks to the off-season purge that saw the team cut ties with Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker.

While Marshall requested his release from the Jets, it was cutting Decker that made little sense at the time, and makes even less sense now as the team waits to get a full report on Enunwa’s injury.  As of last night, it was said to be a recurring neck injury that slowed him earlier this off-season.

Decker’s 2017 salary cost wasn’t prohibitive as the Jets currently sits at $20 million under the cap.

IMG_3699-300x207.jpg

The Jets said goodbye to Eric Decker late in the offseason.

The team was looking to develop a pair of young quarterbacks in Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty and Decker had produced on multiple occasions with far less than ideal situations at quarterback (Tim Tebow, Geno Smith).  In addition, his precise route running and ability to get open on quick slants and in routes would have been ideal for John Morton’s west coast offense.

Once Decker was out of the picture, Enunwa was vaulted to the top of the Jets receiving corps in terms of career receptions with 80. Currently the Jets have Marquess Wilson and Robby Anderson, who have just 56 and 42 grabs respectively as the second and third leading receivers for their careers.  Decker has 385 catches in his seven seasons.

Expectations are low among Jets fans this season, but the one hope for many, was that the young quarterbacks would learn and grow.  With no Decker, and Enunwa possibly out for an extended period of time, that growth may have just gotten a whole lot tougher.

There's an argument for not cutting Decker, but curtailing the development of the young QBs is not part of that argument .  A young QB can learn to read progressions much better if he's not always focus on the veteran who knows the schemes and is always a safety blanket . A veteran QB will go through his progressions and find 1st year receivers, but a 1st yr QB will fixate on a receiver he knows will always be available and forget about his reads . How often did Fitz throw the ball to Marshall when other players were better options ?

Good point, IMHO the value of Decker to the 2017 Jets would have been to help develop the young WR's, provide an example on how to prepare, run routes, catch the ball, forget that last drop, etc...  I actually think there is some potential young talent at WR on this team but they need to be developed, we are talking about 4th - UDFA players that have the physical ability but need to learn to play at this level

Decker would have been a non-fit on this team as it stands now.

Our roster is more or less on the same boat when it comes to the trajectory of their careers. Either they're younger players with less than a year of starting experience being thrust into vital roles on the team or they're veterans trying to make a home for themselves during the prime years of their careers. The only notable exceptions are Matt Forte whose only here because of his contract, and Josh McCown who accepts his role in the youth revolution as a bridge QB.

Decker doesn't quite fit those descriptions, he's about to hit thirty and still has something to give a competitive team over the next few years  of his career. We could have kept him around, he could have given some pointers to younger receivers or maybe provided the QB's with a proven option, and he could have been our main "face of the franchise" for a while, but to what end? So he can be cut next year as the younger players take over? So he can have the thought that he's essentially playing a wasted year on a team that's trying to build for a future he wont be involved in? (the opposite of when he joined)

Nah, lets just cut out the middle man and get ahead on this. This year is about the young players and unless you're like Mccown and you're prepared to have your job taken there's no need to be on this team right now. The Jets did Decker a favor by doing this a year earlier than they needed to.

I disagree bit.  You're right in that here's no hope in terms of wins and losses, but the hope was to develop a young QB.  Better receivers means more open receivers, extended drives, more reps, more growth.

Decker is NOT the better receiver for that role. Not on any level.

Outcome should not dictate strategy.  We are in full rebuild mode.  Playing time for youth more critical than getting a 30-year more targets.  Would Decker been a contributor by the time we're ready to contend?

Then justify a 38 year old QB with a lifetime NFL record of 18-42 being the starter.

QB position a different beast...ideally you want the "face of the franchise" to actually win the job...especially when you have "B" level talent at the position...when you're sucking to actually get a shot at "A" level talent you sometimes need that bridge QB to know how to lose without embarrassing the team too much.  It is what it is.

Its a repeat over and over here. We sign the worst available option at QB and trot him out as the face of the franchise. Macc is solely to blame for all the QB issues on this current team. He had opportunities to upgrade the position in  free agency and during the draft he failed in both chances. Did he not see McCown play in Cleveland last season.

Team is what the team is...what we going to do?  Hard to change allegiances at my age.  Macc's getting a chance to build this team from the ground up.  I've liked some of his moves and this is year 3 from his inaugural draft so we should have enough info to gauge his progress by year's end.  He just needs to keep the rebuild moving forward IMO and hope gets lucky at the QB position eventually.  By eventually, I mean hurry the **** up already...lol

Understood and agree if I was a season ticket holder paying the PSL fee, tickets and parking id be more pissed and I would be at camp protesting this sh*t instead of showing up there and rooting on garbage, The franchise is basically jamming it up all our asses with the roster they've assembled this season, one of the worst Jets roster in a longtime and possibly worst in the NFL. I hope to see another Jets Super Bowl in my lifetime. So not ready for another sh*t season.

Decker has been injured a ton and he's at that point in his career when he surely will be injured again.   he's not productive spending half the year on the training table.

This is the key point Decker was to much of a risk for a player who already has shown that he couldn't take the wear and tear of being a Number 1# type WR; now couple that with the perception that Decker was a locker room lawyer and the Jets felt that they needed to move on.

If Decker were the difference between making the playoffs and not, then you sign him, but as you pointed out elsewhere the Jets playoff hopes are between slim and none at best.

That is why the released him.

Except protesting won't make the team any better...season-ticket holders know what they paid for...zero guarantees some years for a competitive team...sometimes it just has to get worse before it gets better...this year most likely going that route...take solace...Titans sucked really bad for a few years...picked up Mariota...and now is everyone's favorite darkhorse to make the playoffs...we need a QB, preferably our own draft choice to hit jackpot...plus some rising talent around him to propel the team forward...hope springs eternal this time of year.

Thank you!!

Once again the foolishness of QBs just can magically uplift those around them no matter who is on the team is just flat out ridiculous.

You cant be serious. The Jets are a perfect example of what success you have with a decent QB.
