This is Mayock's way of saying, "Uncle Eddie is a nice guy, just don't give him any beer."

Here's Mayock eviscerating Hackenberg:

Guess technically you're correct.  This franchise has had its fill; of first round turds.  But Mcc's decision to pick Hack in the second round should end his tenure as GM.  Dumb move all around.

If blowing 2nd round DPs was the criteria for firing a GM, we'd have a new GM every year.

Just saying.

Gruden thinks every guy who appears on that show is a first rounder

Well that's not true plus there is a bit of a revisionist history going on. Hackenberg was the most intriguing QB in the draft, by many accounts. Here is just one calling him a 1st to 3rd rounder. http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/story/nfl-draft-quarterbacks-jared-goff-carson-wentz-paxton-lynch-042816

Christian Hackenberg receives abundance of 1st-team reps, but Bryce Petty steals show | Jets QB report (8/9/17)

By Con-man Ruse | NJ Advance Media

While Christian Hackenberg received his most work with the first team this summer, Bryce Petty was the Jets' most impressive quarterback at practice on Wednesday.

Jets Football
How'd the Jets quarterbacks look?

FLORHAM PARK — Bryce Petty is the forgotten man of One Jets Drive. He watches most team drills, cleans up the scraps of reps, and rarely makes much — if any — impact in practice. He's clearly behind Josh McCown and Bryce Petty in this wide-open quarterback competition, but hasn't really been given an opportunity to change that.

Well, that was until Wednesday, when Petty put on a show.

Receiving his most action in 11-on-11 drills to date, Petty completed 9 of 12 passes, highlighted by two long touchdowns to Robby Anderson and Frankie Hammond. He had command in the huddle, poise at the line, and made several impressive throws in addition to his scoring strikes. It was easily the best the third-year quarterback has looked in camp.

But what about McCown and Hackenberg? Here's the complete quarterback report.

THE ROTATION

McCown didn't work much at all. This shouldn't come as much of a surprise. The Jets play the Titans in two days. Hackenberg and Petty will see the most action. The rest of this week should be about getting them ready to play.

REP COUNTER (practice):

  • Josh McCown: 12
  • Christian Hackenberg: 29
  • Bryce Petty: 20

REP COUNTER (camp)

  • McCown: 227
  • Hackenberg: 196
  • Bryce Petty: 148

THE STATS
Poor play from the offensive line has been a storyline most of camp. It's clearly impacted both Hackenberg and Petty, because neither, through the first nine practices, had much time in the pocket.

On Wednesday, the first-team line played an awful lot more than usual (mostly all of McCown and Hackenberg's snaps), and the second-team line worked with Petty. This may have been done to evaluate Hackenberg, and see what he looks like with time to throw.

TEAM DRILL STATS
Josh McCown

  • 4 of 5 | sack

Christian Hackenberg

  • 10 of 18 | TD | 2 INTs | 2 sacks

Bryce Petty

  • 9 of 12 | 2 TDs | sack

_____

CUMULATIVE CAMP STATS
Josh McCown

  • 92 of 140 (65%) | 6 TDs | 3 INTs

Christian Hackenberg

  • 61 of 119 (51%) | 5 TDs | 4 INTs

Bryce Petty

  • 55 of 87 (63%) | 3 TDs | 2 INTs

Josh McCown: THE GOOD

He barely played in team drills, so it's hard to praise him for anything. He didn't throw an interception, so that's a positive.

Josh McCown: THE BAD

Again, McCown didn't play enough to truly analyze him.

Christian Hackenberg: THE GOOD

Hackenberg threw a beauty of a touchdown to wide receiver Frankie Hammond in red zone work. The second-year quarterback put the ball perfectly over the head of the defender, which allowed Hammond to score on the fade route. It was an impressive throw.

When Hackenberg's good, he's really good. The issue is his lows are so, so low.

Christian Hackenberg: THE BAD

In the first eight training camp practices, Hackenberg didn't throw a single interception in team work. In his last two, he has five (one in 7-on-7s). The alarming aspect of these turnovers is they're seemingly telegraphed to defenders. Hackenberg just isn't making good decisions.

I think this comes down, again, to his read progression. He's locking onto his first receiver, and sticking with him throughout the play. If that guy happens to get open, it's a completion. If he doesn't, the pass falls incomplete... or worse.

The defense is starting to realize this, and just following Hackenberg's eyes. Hackenberg has to dissect the coverage quicker, so he knows when to go to his second target. He's not doing that right now.

Bryce Petty: THE GOOD

There was a lot to like about Petty on Wednesday. His arm was alive, and he played with more confidence than at any other point in camp. His touchdown to Frankie Hammond was perfectly thrown. Really a thing of beauty. He did a nice job moving around in the pocket. He's deceptively mobile.

Bryce Petty: THE BAD

Not much to complain about. Petty didn't do anything wrong. First time in camp we've been able to say that.

THE HIGHLIGHTS AND LOWLIGHTS

Here are a few of the standout plays from practice:

  • It wasn't as bad as Tuesday, but receivers again struggled with drops. Four, to be exact. Fullback Anthony Firkser, along with receivers  Myles White, Jalin Marshall and ArDarius Stewart all had balls go through their hands.
  • Quarterback Christian Hackenberg seems to be getting more comfortable throwing the fade. He hit Charone Peake for one to beat cornerback Morris Claiborne, and later connected with Frankie Hammond. Good to see. He struggled with that earlier in camp.
  • This is a silly highlight, but Christian Hackenberg has sliding down pat. He did it twice Wednesday with perfect form. Considering how much Ryan Fitzpatrick and Geno Smith struggled with getting down the last several years, that's a good thing.
  • Quarterback Christian Hackenberg hit receiver Robby Anderson with a beautiful pass over his left shoulder for a first-down on third down. Nice touch pass.

WINNER OF THE DAY

Hackenberg had moments, but his lows were just too low. Petty was the best quarterback on the field Wednesday.

SCORECARD

McCown: 6 practices "won"

Hackenberg: 2

Petty: 2

Jets' offense looks a tad sharper as preseason opener nears | Day 10 camp practice report

By Darryl Slater | NJ Advance Media

The Jets and quarterback Christian Hackenberg held their 10th training camp practice Wednesday, as Saturday night's preseason opener against the Titans approaches. Who looked good on Wednesday? Who didn't? Here are our observations and takeaways from this practice ...

INJURY REPORT

No major changes.

The following players did not practice: outside linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin (back), safety Shamarko Thomas, wide receiver Gabe Marks, running back Matt Forte (hamstring), running back Bilal Powell (neck), cornerback Xavier Coleman, receiver Deshon Foxx, and linebacker Frank Beltre.

Jets coach Todd Bowles said after practice that nobody has officially been ruled out yet for Saturday night's preseason opener against the Titans.

HOW DID QUARTERBACKS LOOK?

An interesting change, as Christian Hackenberg got the most reps of practice.

For the first nine practices, Josh McCown got the most reps each time.

Hackenberg on Wednesday got 27 reps, compared to 20 for Bryce Petty, and 12 for McCown. While Hackenberg threw two touchdown passes for the second straight day, he also threw two interceptions for the second straight day.

KICKING BATTLE

It is neck and neck between second-year pro Ross Martin (who was out of the league last year after the Jets cut him in training camp) and veteran Chandler Catanzaro.

Both guys went 5 of 6 on Wednesday. Martin missed from 59 yards, while Catanzaro missed from 49. The progression went: 29, 33, 33, 39, 49, 50.

Big rebound day for Catanzaro. On Monday, he went 2 of 6, while Martin went 5 of 6. Preseason games will be huge for these guys, and for this competition.

FEWER DROPS

The Jets had an absurd number of drops (seven) on Tuesday, a day after No. 1 receiver Quincy Enunwa (neck) was ruled out for the season.

Just three drops for the Jets on Wednesday — one by Jalin Marshall, one by rookie ArDarius Stewart (though the ball was a bit behind him), and one by fullback Anthony Firkser, a roster long shot.

With Enunwa done for the year, and Robby Anderson elevated to the No. 1 receiver spot, the Jets have a very small margin for error on offense.

THREE STARS OF PRACTICE

We'll give one star to Martin, who continues to push Catanzaro in the kicking competition.

Another goes to Petty, who had a solid practice, as he completed 8 of 12 passes for two touchdowns. He was the best of the three quarterbacks on Wednesday.

And how about Anderson for a star?

He had his second straight productive practice, highlighted by a pretty, over-the-shoulder catch along the sideline, on a throw from Hackenberg.

Christian Hackenberg gets a shot with starters, fails to impress

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets quarterback competition took a slight turn on Wednesday, as Christian Hackenberg -- not Josh McCown -- took the majority of the first-team reps.

That was a first in training camp.

What does it mean?

This was the second-to-last practice before the first preseason game, Saturday night against the Tennessee Titans, so it's probably an indication that Hackenberg and Bryce Petty will get most of the playing time. Coach Todd Bowles hasn't revealed his plan for the game.

A recap of Wednesday:

JOSH McCOWN

He took only 12 reps, a personal low in this camp. The coaches know what he can and can't do, so this is a good time to focus on the young quarterbacks. He probably won't play much against the Titans, if at all.

Wow moment: He was primarily a spectator, so there's not much to report. He completed 4 of 5 passes.

Whoa moment: See above.

CHRISTIAN HACKENBERG

After no interceptions in the first eight practices, Hackenberg has four in the last two. His practice time has increased (28 reps on Wednesday), so that's part of it. He's also being more aggressive than before, taking chances. There's no reason to panic. Let's see how he performs in the games before we go there.

Wow moment: Hackenberg threw a feathery deep fade to Robby Anderson, who enjoyed his best practice. Hackenberg also threw two touchdowns in a red zone period, although the first was a risky, jump-ball pass to Frankie Hammond in the end zone. He completed only 12 of 20 passes, including two interceptions. There were a couple of other balls that could've been picked off.

Whoa moment:  He was intercepted by Rontez Miles (a possible miscommunication with the receiver) and Dexter McDougle. On the latter play, he tried to fit it into a tight window to rookie tight end Jordan Leggett, and the throw was slightly behind him.

BRYCE PETTY

Petty was the No. 2 quarterback on this day, completing 8 of 12 passes (two touchdowns) on 19 reps.

Wow moment: He threw two touchdowns (Hammond and Anderson), so give him credit for that. When Petty has time and knows where to go with the ball, he can spin it as well as anyone on the roster.

Whoa moment: There were no major mistakes; this was one of his better days. For Petty, he needs to play well in the games to secure a roster spot.

My primary hope is that the Coaches can play the best QB.  If it is Petty, play him.  Petty has another year in the pros-makes a big difference.  It does not have to be an irreversible Hack negative.

Plus petty is older than hack and has actually started actual regular season NFL games. It should be expected for Petty to be ahead of hack for those reasons alone.

So Bowles could completely change my opinion of him today by putting Petty in with the 'first' unit.  I can't imagine any reason he wouldn't or shouldn't at this point unless he's pre-determined to start Hack the rest of the way leading into the first PS game (which would seem stubborn to me).

i'm more curious about the preseason game rotation.  and how much will that game outweigh all the practices if at all?
