Jets Claim TE Will Tye and Other Waiver Claims

WIll-Tye.jpg

The Jets needed to add some depth at tight end and they didn’t have to look very far to get one as they’ve claimed former Giants tight end Will Tye, according to Field Yates.

In 29 career games, Tye has  90 receptions for  859 yards and 4 touchdowns.

With Austin Seferian-Jenkins suspended for the first two games of the season and no proven pass catchers in Jordan Leggett, Eric Tomlinson and Jason Vander Laan, the addition of Tye makes sense.

Best fit WCO

Jets claimed WR Damore'ea Stringfellow from the Dolphins. 99-yard TD in the preseason cc: @AnthonyBiase

Plus body control. Can twist and turn in are and has impressive ability to finish the circus catch deep down the field. Big target with catch radius that is a big advantage. Can sink low to dig throws off the grass. Targets ball at the high point. Playing style very similar to former teammate Laquon Treadwell. Works aggressively back to the throw preventing the contested catch. Gave Alabama All-American cornerback Bobby Humphrey plenty of work in their early season matchup. Excels as a vertical threat when ball is in the air. Shows zone-beater tendencies underneath.

Weaknesses

Not much juice in his release and could become a jam target by physical cornerbacks. Can be uninspiring with his routes. Could use more sharpness and urgency into and out of the top of his routes. Is slow and labored sinking into his break for comeback routes. Lacks foot quickness to uncover on short throws. Scouts question his long speed; might need extended runway to reach top gear. Hands were inconsistent in 2016 season. Won't look for extra work as a blocker.

Draft Projection

Round 6

Sources Tell Us

"I like him better than a lot of the scouts I talk to. He competes and he's a better athlete than people give him credit for. I'm hoping he's there for us on the third day (Rounds 4-7)." -- NFC West scout

NFL Comparison

Tre McBride

Bottom Line

Big receiver with average speed but an ability to track the ball and win it at the high point. Might not ever be dynamic enough to be a dangerous starting target, but he has the body control and competitiveness to work the second and third levels with some success. Improved route-running should improve his separation ability but average starter might be his ceiling. His best fit could be with a West Coast offense.

Seems like competition for Marshall. 2016 UDFA

This year, the Denver Broncos think they have found their diamond in the rough in Wide Receiver/Return Specialist Kalif Raymond.  A standout 2-sport athlete (Football & Track) from the Patriot League’s College of the Holy Cross, Raymond possesses the balance of speed and quickness that NFL scouts drool over, recording a 4.34 40 yard dash time at Harvard’s pro day.

“I think that got everybody hyped up a bit,” said the ecstatic Raymond, “because when it came time to run my routes, scouts were paying attention to me to see if it translated from the 40 to the routes.”

His blazing speed is not anything new, as he holds school records in both the 60 (6.95) and 100 (10.71) meter dashes for the Holy Cross Track & Field program.  Despite everyone who has seen Kalif run knowing that he was special, it took him a little longer for it to sink in.  He told Jennifer Tolland of the Worcester Telegram

“I was never really a guy who was going to go out there and run a blazing time.  I was in the top tier, but I was never really ‘the fast guy.’ Sophomore year here, I put on 15 pounds of muscle, so from a strength standpoint, doing track and working on my form, I continuously trained to become a fast guy.  I came back (that year) and was running by everyone.  I think my body matured a little bit and everything trickled down from there.”

Some info on OLB Robinson via June 2016

Robinson more comfortable in second year

Eric Oslund - Jun 6, 2016

When the Minnesota Vikings selected linebacker Edmond Robinson in the seventh round of the 2015 draft they knew he was going to be a project player. He had great size and athleticism, but he really only worked in pass coverage while at college and played at a Division II school with an enrollment of just under 1,200 students.

The original plan might have been to store him away on the practice squad for a season and have him get some work there, but after a good showing during the preseason it was evident that they couldn’t do that. They kept him on the 53-man roster and he primarily worked as the strongside linebacker, backing up Anthony Barr.

Robinson admitted that his head was spinning for most of his rookie season, as he was trying to learn the defense and the playbook, but he is a lot more comfortable heading into his second season.

“The second year, a lot has slowed down,” he said. “Kind of understand where I’m suppose to be at. Getting a little more reps, so I’m starting to understand the defense more, understanding what the coaches want from me and just going through and flying around.”

He is able to just go out onto the field now and play the game. He isn’t constantly thinking about where he is supposed to be or what he is supposed to be doing anymore. He is able to just go out there and do what he is suppose to do with methodically going through each step of the play. He has a much better understanding of the playbook and is more comfortable in the defense the Vikings run.

The coaching staff has clearly seen Robinson’s increased comfort level this offseason because they have began to increase his role in the defense. Not only is he working as the strongside linebacker, but also as the weakside linebacker.

“I’m getting acclimated to both sides,” he said. “I know the strong side. They’ve been moving me, I’ve been getting some reps at the weak side as well. The more you can do, we all know, the better and the better chance of you making the ball team. So I’m just trying to do what they ask me to do and just go out there and do my job.”

My guess Mauldin & Vanderlaan go on IR.

Perhaps Peake gets cut?

Darryl Slater‏  @DarrylSlater

Jets must make four moves (cuts or IR placement) after claiming four players off waivers. Mauldin to short-term IR?

Short-term IR rules (in the case of Mauldin): Player can practice after Week 6, play after Week 8. Teams can now have two short-term IR guys

Former #Seahawks RB Alex Collins, who cleared waivers today, will sign with the #Jets practice squad, source said.

Alex Collins for Arkansas made an amazing play 2 years ago to beat Ole Miss, which put Bama in the SEC Championship game and eventually the playoffs.  I love the guy!

this guy?

SOURCES TELL US

"Last year I thought Jonathan Williams was the better back, but Collins changed my mind this year. He's not special but he's solid. I think he's probably a third-rounder." -- SEC area scout

NFL COMPARISON

 Chris Ivory

BOTTOM LINE

Collins is the epitome of consistency rushing for over 1,000 yards and at least 5.4 yards per carry in each of his three seasons. Vision and footwork are the catalysts for his elusiveness and he has flashed long speed. Collins is a repetitive runner lacking dynamic talent, but he's run in gap, power and zone schemes and should be a scheme fit for most teams looking at running back. Collins should be able to step right in and challenge for carries and red zone work immediately.

WILL TYE, Giants, TE

AGE: 25
NFL EXPERIENCE: 3rd Year
COLLEGE: Stony Brook
SIZE: 6-2, 262 pounds

Austin Seferian-Jenkins is suspended the first two games of the season. Jason Vander Laan (shoulder), Chris Gragg (knee, IR) and Eric Tomlinson (foot) are dealing with injuries. Needless to say, the Jets needed a tight end.

And they got one.

Tye, whom the Giants waived on Saturday, is a 25-year-old 3-year veteran. He signed with the Giants as an undrafted free agent out of Stony Brook in 2015. Tye has 90 career receptions for 859 yards and four touchdowns in 29 career games. He has experience playing in a West Coast offense — which Ben McAdoo has run with the Giants the last three years.

KALIF RAYMOND, Broncos, WR

AGE: 23
NFL EXPERIENCE: 2nd Year
COLLEGE: Holy Cross
SIZE: 5-9, 160

Raymond appeared in four games for the Broncos last year. He caught six passes for 137 yards and a touchdown. Three of his six receptions went for 20-plus yards. The Jets were likely intrigued by Raymond's return value. In those same four games, he had 11 punt returners for 111 yards with a long of 25.

Raymond did struggled a bit holding on to the ball. He fumbled twice.

In the preseason this year, Raymond caught five passes for 54 yards. He averaged 9.4 yards on five punt returns, and returned one kick for 41 yards.

EDMOND ROBINSON, Vikings, LB

AGE: 25
NFL EXPERIENCE: 3rd year
COLLEGE: Newberry
SIZE: 6-3, 245 pounds

The Vikings drafted Robinson in the seventh round in 2015. He played primarily special teams his first two years, registering 12 tackles in 21 games. He had one pass breakup as a rookie.

Robinson ranked second on the Vikings with 16 tackles in the preseason this year, nine of which were solo.

DAMORE'EA STRINGFELLOW, Dolphins, WR

AGE: 22
NFL EXPERIENCE: Rookie
COLLEGE: Ole Miss
SIZE: 6-2, 219

Stringfellow signed with the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent this summer after an impressive three-year college career spent in part with Washington (2013), then Ole Miss (2014-2015). Last year, Stringfellow had a career-high 46 catches for 716 yards and six touchdowns. He was not invited to the NFL Combine due to an altercation resulting in assault plea.

In the preseason this year, Stringfellow caught four passes for 130 yards and a touchdown — a 99-yard touchdown. The Dolphins didn't use him as a returner.

Have to think Charone Peake and Marcus Murphy could be gone after today's four #Jets claims. And Lorenzo Mauldin, Jason Vander Laan to IR?
