I didn't realize until like a week ago that he's only 25... He could be a real building block if he comes back to form... Worth the chance for a team like the Jets.

-- Kony Ealy says he can feeling it coming. He estimates he's within 85 to 90 percent of being the dominating defensive lineman the New York Jets hoped he would be when they claimed him off waivers in late August.

Ealy still is looking for his first sack of the season, and this might not seem like the week he’ll break through. He missed two days of with an excused absence for personal reasons, which he wouldn’t disclose. But the Jets (1-2) host the Jacksonville Jaguars (2-1) on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, and Jacksonville quarterback Blake Bortles might be the perfect target for Ealy and his linemates. Bortles has been sacked 142 times in three-plus NFL seasons.“Every time you pop on the tape we’re in the quarterback’s face, we’re pushing the pocket," Ealy told ESPN.com. “We missing them by a hair. We get hands on them, we just didn’t get him all the way down.’’

Bortles has been sacked only twice this season. He almost lost his starting job in the preseason, but the 6-foot-5, 232-pounder from Central Florida bounced back after getting benched and boasts a 93.8 rating. The Jets have just five sacks on the season, tied for 27th in the NFL. They got to Jay Cutler three times in a 20-6 victory in Week 3. At 6-foot-3 and 231 pounds, Cutler, 34, like Bortles, presented a big target in the pocket. Bortles, 25, is younger and more mobile.Ealy says New York's defensive line is focusing more on itself than on the opposing quarterback. The fourth-year pro said he’s seen defensive lines take upward of six weeks before hitting stride. The Jets, said Ealy, are closer than that.

“We saw sparks of that last week, and as weeks increase we should see more and more of that,’’ Ealy said. “As the weeks increase, you should see more and more of me just being more comfortable and going out there and just triggering.’’

Ealy had 14 sacks in his first three seasons with the Carolina Panthers. At 6-foot-4, 275 pounds with a time of 4.69 seconds in the 40-yard dash, Ealy was compared to Seattle Seahawks lineman Michael Bennett coming out of college at Missouri. He’s flirted with greatness. He became the first player in Super Bowl history to record an interception and multiple sacks when he did so in Super Bowl 50. But he’s had stretches when he hasn’t affected a game.Ealy said that’s about to change. When asked what it will look like when he’s at his best, Ealy said, "destructive."

“Especially when I have an opportunity to keep coming, keep running, keep feeding. Destructive.’’

-- The latest New York Jets stock watch, with risers and fallers from their overtime win over the Jacksonville Jaguars :

SIX UP

~ ~ DE Kony Ealy: He did his Dikembe Mutombo impersonation, with one rejection after another. Ealy deflected four passes, the most ever by a Jets defensive lineman, according to StatsPass. He turned one deflection into an interception, grabbing the ball out of the air and nearly scoring -- a tremendously athletic move. In the final minute of the fourth quarter, he batted a pass on a third-and-goal, forcing Jacksonville to settle for a field goal. The Jets' scouting report noted a low release point for Blake Bortles, so Ealy and his linemates made it a point to get their arms up when rushing. He has five batted passes for the season; no edge defender in the league has more than two, per Pro Football Focus.

-- Kony Ealy made one of the key defensive plays Sunday in the New York Jets' victory, and he was rewarded with a game ball in the locker room.

But this wasn't just a routine game-ball presentation from the coach.

Ealy was away from the team for a few days because of a death in his family. He lost his sister, Latoya Brown, earlier in the week, according to the Jets. No other details were provided. It made for an emotional scene as coach Todd Bowles handed him the ball.

.@KonyEaly94 recently lost his sister.

With a heavy heart, he earned today’s game ball.

Ealy missed two days of practice and didn't rejoin the team until Friday, but he evidently had a strong grasp of the game plan in the 23-20 overtime win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. In their scouting report of Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles, the Jets' coaches noted that his release point was low and that he was vulnerable to batted passes. The defensive linemen were instructed to get their arms up, and they did, especially Ealy, who had four deflections.

The biggest came late in the third quarter, when Ealy batted a pass into the air, caught it and rumbled 7 yards to the Jacksonville 7-yard line. It set up a field goal, giving the Jets a 20-10 lead. If it weren't for a tackle by Bortles, the Jets would've had their first defensive touchdown in 61 games, the NFL's longest active streak.

"We need a turnover, period," Ealy said. "We always want to play up. That's our mentality on defense and I just had an opportunity to make a play on the ball."

And now he has a game ball, one that he will cherish.

Jets DE Kony Ealy was named an NFL Unsung Hero of the Week by ESPN Stats & Information. Even without a sack, Ealy led all defenders in Week 4 with a career-high 10.5% disrupted dropback percentage, easily eclipsing his previous high of 5.7%. Ealy, who had five career batted passes before Sunday, recorded three against the Jaguars. (He was credited with four on the press-box stats) The Patriots, who cut Ealy on Aug. 26, have one batted pass as a team.

Jets DE Mo Wilkerson (toe, shoulder) missed practice for the third straight day and is listed as questionable. He will be a game-time decision. He missed practice last week and still wound up playing 53 of 68 snaps on Sunday. Coach Todd Bowles admitted they've considered sitting him for at least a game to give him a chance to get healthier. Rookie Jordan Leggett was declared out after his balky knee swelled up after yesterday's practice. He will have tests on the knee.

The addition of DE Xavier Cooper gives the Jets some insurance if DE Muhammad Wilkerson (foot, shoulder) can't play Thursday night against the Bills. Wilkerson he been playing without practicing in recent weeks, but this is different because it's a short week. Ed Stinson (neck) also is banged up, but he could practice today. Cooper (6-4, 300) was cut recently by the 49ers. He was a third-round pick of the Browns in 2015. He has played 32 games with two sacks.

On Sunday, Jets DE Kony Ealy faces the team that drafted him and traded him — the Panthers — and he admitted "revenge" is on his mind. "I've got a lot of friends I played with and a lot of coaches," he said. "It's going to mean more to me playing in that game and just being fired up about going out there and just really doing what I need to do for my team. But also, getting a little revenge, I guess you could say." At least he's honest. (Source: NFL Network's "Good Morning Football.")

After cutting Mo Wilkerson, Jets GM Mike Maccagnan doesn't think the defensive line is a position of need. He said it's not a "high priority for us right now." So forget about them paying $10 million-a-year for a Sheldon Richardson reunion. Maccagnan said he'd like to re-sign rotational DT Mike Pennel.
