..Jamal Adams, Marcus Maye & ArDarius Stewart ~ ~ ~

Every year we ask if the Jets are finally going to fix the offense and make a big draft investment to do so.  And almost every year the answer is no.  I like Adams and Maye, they will anchor the secondary for years to come.  But the Jets could have used last year to kickstart the offense with DeShaun Watson in the 1st and Dalvin Cook in the 2nd.  I'm sure we could have found a Safety or two in this year's draft.  JMHO.

Adams’ inability to generate turnovers will hold him back from being an all pro type of player. It’s still hard to believe the Jets took a guy that high that never made big plays in college. He doesn’t make up for the lack of turnovers with coverage skills either, which at least Revis was able to do.

But he’s a leader

This is Nawrocki’s quote from that article:

Jamal Adams, S, 1st Round (No. 6)

Nolan Nawrocki NFL Draft 2017 Preview: "Adams is an awesome football player, and I love the player. Saying that, I still struggle with how highly he is going to get drafted. Where we are picking (top 16), I don't know if I could draft a box safety with 4.6 speed. The last time it happened with Mark Barron, he got converted to a linebacker. It's a passing league now. You have to be able to match up and cover. I don't see him being able to cover Jimmy Graham or Rob Gronkowski." - scout

Of course Adams can cover Gronk and Graham......when they’re on the disabled list.

Or like on 12/31 when Gronk was not targeted to save him for the playoffs and Adams and Lee claimed  "WE-SHUT-EM-DOWN"

High low blanket coverage and Brady decided that he would go else where with the ball.  Unless you think he was instructed not to throw him the ball to save money.  NE wouldn't do that, would they?

Adams true value is not as a "cover" safety. And I don't believe anyone has ever claimed he was even an average cover safety. The scout report is stupid because it ignores the two qualities that put Adams near the top of most draft boards. His leadership skills and football IQ. When you can read the O and know where the play is going, you can set up your teammates to make plays and you don't have to be particularly fast yourself to make a play.

So, what exactly is the point? No one ever said Adams is a cover safety and now because he isn't, he was somehow a bad pick?

YOU DO NOT PICK AN IN THE BOX SAFETY WHO CANNOT COVER AND CANNOT CREATE TURNOVERS AT 6.  HOW MANY TIMES DO WE HAVE TO SHOUT THIS?  If indeed he was never viewed as a guy who could cover then the pick has to go down as a very poor pick.

Cam chancellors get picked in the later rounds.  Earl Thomas and ed reeds that can cover and create turnovers get picked early.

Will this guy be a good in the box saftey long term?  Could very well be but it is an awful use of draft resources if that is all he is.  We drafted a small ILB the year before to be an in the box tackling machine.
