Sources: Neither John Fox nor Vic Fangio in Chicago Bears' future plans

Pace has plans for change in near future but giving Fangio interim audition isn't happening

There has been a lot of talk around Chicago about the possibility of firing head coach John Fox prior to the end of the 2017 season and elevating defensive coordinator Vic Fangio to interim head coach for the rest of the season if the decision has already been made that Fox will not be back in 2018.

Fangio is well respected in league circles for his work coordinating the defenses of the San Francisco 49ers and Bears, but he is still somewhat unknown as a head-coaching prospect, having received minimal interest to date. Fangio is particularly popular in Chicago right now, and yet it appears unlikely he would return as the defensive coordinator should he be passed over for the head job.

The interim head coach solution is viewed by some of our sources around the league as a great way to let Fangio audition for the job and give general manager Ryan Pace an idea of what he has in house before shopping outside the organization for his next head coach should Fox be terminated.

However, according to several sources close to the situation, Fangio being named an interim head coach won’t happen. The reason that won't happen, we’re hearing, is that the Bears front office already has a list of names to interview as potential head coach candidates going forward and Fangio's name isn’t on it.

If Fangio were to have success for a few games as an interim head coach, it could create significant pressure on Pace to give Fangio the job on a permanent basis even if he still isn’t convinced Fangio’s the right guy for the job.

According to our sources, Pace already has plans for change in the very near future and auditioning Fangio could possibly interfere with those plans a lot more than help them. While there is virtually no chance that Fangio will return as defensive coordinator with whomever is named the next Bears head coach, we’re hearing that’s a loss Pace is already preparing for.

Let's not give a guy a chance to be HC just in case he succeeds and performs well? Makes a ton of sense.....how did some of these owners make their money? I know it was handed to Woody but my god.

Sounds like Pace has someone or two or three already in mind...

Bears? Family owned since George Halas

Which is fine, good to have a short list....but wouldn't you at least want to take a peek at someone who you could actually trial run before making a decision? You can still interview the 3 others you have in mind in the offseason anyway. Maybe you fall into a Tomlin, Rooney rule situation where a guy really takes you by surprise.

I don't really care what Pace does or doesn't do.

This is a weird response from the person who posted the thread. I don't really care what they do either....because I am a Jets fan, on a Jets board. Simply responding to the article that you posted and offered my opinion.

Still NFL related. I posted it. It said what Pace wanted to do..You asked additional questions and after answering your first I didn't feel like I wanted to go back and forth on what the Bears GM wants to do

Honestly this isn't unsound logic.

A dead-end team can often respond well to an initial change of leadership. That doesn't therefore mean Fangio knows how to hire a bunch of competent under-coaches, run everything a HC needs to in the offseason and preseason, etc.

There's little likelihood of the team not responding positively to Fangio in a short-term appointment; that doesn't mean he's fit to be their HC long term. Especially after investing so much in their QB they may want to go with an experienced HC from the college ranks or promote an OC rather than a DC who's more likely to see a young QB as a mistake-prone liability and relegate him to heavy doses of handoffs, dumpoffs, and low-percentage 3rd down attempts.

Fox along with Jeff Fisher are on top of the most overrated head coaches of all time list.

Soon to be added to that list imo is Bill O'brien.  The amount of love that guy gets is beyond me. Does nothing at all with just about every single Qb he has gone after despite being a 'QB Guru'

Watson comes along and in about 4 games makes him look like a genus for 'developing him'

His teams successes are due to playing in an awful divisor and having a dominant defense.  Their D is not quite as good this year as in the past and they are falling on their ass.

They both have demonstrated a common flaw:  Inability to adapt their style to the modern game.

I will say, however, that his ability to make the playoffs in Denver with Tebow as his QB was impressive, and puts him higher in my eyes than Fisher.  But not by a whole lot.

Ryan Pace seems to have someone in mind already.  Pace spent his entire career with the Saints, since 2001 until he took the Chicago position.

So just looking at the NO staff, he could be making a play for Sean Payton, he could be going after Pete Carmichael, their current OC, who coached for 6 seasons with Pace.

Or he could be eying John Morton, who without a doubt has done a fantastic job with the Jets this year.  No one expected the Jets offense to be functional let alone McCown putting up the numbers he has so far.  They only worked together for two seasons in NO but wouldn’t shock me.
