Josh McCown thinking about another year with Jets

Darin Gantt

We all thought the tank invasion of the Meadowlands would happen on the Jets side of MetLife Stadium.

Then again, we didn’t think Eli Manning was going to be the old quarterback being benched, either.

So when it comes to the question of Josh McCown’s future with the Jets, we’ve firmly entered “why not?” territory, and he admitted he’s thinking about the possibility of another run.

“When you feel like you’ve been chasing this level you believe you can play at for a long time, and you start to feel like you’re scratching the surface of that and doing some of those things and settling into a system that you like, it’s hard to just go, ‘Yeah man, I’ll be done,’ ” McCown said, via Greg Joyce of the New York Post. “But at the same time, if you are going to be done, it’s nice to be able to say you played your best ball at the end. So we’ll see.”

The 38-year-old McCown has been far more than a placeholder this year. He’s kept Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty glued firmly to the bench, and he’s exceeded every expectation for a team that’s done the same. So as he approaches his first full 16-game season as a starter, it’s natural for him to consider the possibility.

“I love being in this system,” McCown said. “It would just be fun to play in a system for two years in a row. I would love to see where I could take that.”

He said he wanted to talk to his family this offseason to see if he wanted to keep playing, but the idea has to be tempting. He signed a one-year contract, and his play this year and his reputation as a positive influence in a locker room will likely keep him employed, somewhere, if he wants to keep going.

McCown has done well this year, but was it possible that Petty would have done just as well , maybe better? We'll never know. I've watched every game sometimes twice and McCown has missed open receivers, came up short on a few long ball passes. The offensive scheme I believe would have supported Pettys style of play. What the Jets lack right now on offense IMO is a more established ground game, and a better O-line. This has to be the priority in the off season and upcoming draft. The Jets have boo koo bucks to spend next year. If a QB is in the cards than they need to to everything in their power to trade up to the top 3 spots in the draft and go after one. Wentz and Goff have proved themselves to be potential franchise QB's.  And if they can maintain their level of play. I think they will. Unlike the Kaep and RGIII styles, these guys are talented pocket passers not running QB'S. They have all the tools to maintain and only get better. McCown has reached his ceiling and is old and not the future QB for the Jets. Maybe keep McCown around as a mentor for a rookie QB, but that's it. I hope they have learned from the Fitz fiasco.

I'd like to know what the odds were that McCown would suddenly have his healthiest year now?

healthiest and by far the most productive..........and that we would be the first club in years that he has NOT led to the top pick?...sooooooo JETSY!!!!

McCown can only return if we have drafted a QB in the first round and we need a "placeholder"
to keep the spot warm until the young QB is ready to take over.  No Fitzpatrick nonsense
give him a contract offer as a "placeholder", if he takes it fine otherwise move on

Agreed and then keep him around for veteran depth in case of injury.

If we draft a QB and Bowles is still the coach, I don't want McCown or any veteran QB near this team.  Hopefully the QB we draft will be ready to play day one.  If not, let Petty start until he is.

If we let Petty start the rest of the games we probably would be able to get a shot at a ready to go QB. But nope, the goal is improvement and the ceiling is 8-8.

If the Jets somehow got one of the top 4 QB's in the draft McCown is actually a pretty good option.

Let McCown start the first 3 or 4 games while our young rookie seltles in and then move to him.  Just can't pay him big bucks.  It'll need to be a new HC though - as he can't be playing for his job.

Much like the Giants did with Warner/Eli.

If you can get this guy some weapons, you can win with him. He is accurate and the 4th quarter meltdowns are not his fault. Jenkins has to be more consistent all day, they need their tight end. The OLine has to protect better. You come back next year with a better running game and you can win a Super Bowl with McCown. Spend the money to get this guy some weapons.

Just kidding.

Manning was drafted #1 (Jets wont be drafting #1) and Warner is a HOFer.

More likely they draft a 2nd round QB that cant beat out McCown and he remains as starter.

McCown's point is essentially whether he wants to come back for another year, not if the Jets want to bring him back.  Basically, if he opts not to retire, they will almost certainly offer him another deal.  Regardless of what the fans think, it's pretty clear that the entire team, both coaches and players, are all fans of the guy.

If the plan is to go QB in the draft, McCown is a near certainty to be returning.  Really the only way I see them not going in that direction is if they opt to address QB in FA instead of the draft (i.e., Cousins).
