JetNation Tuesday Tidbits; Like it or not, Hackenberg Debut Could be Coming

JetNation

Just a few notes, quotes, links and thoughts related to the current state of the New York Jets:

  • With Josh McCown done for the year, Todd Bowles is forced to go to Bryce Petty over Christian Hackenberg. An easy decision, really.  However, given the poor play of the Jets’ interior offensive line and Petty’s injury history, would anyone be surprised if Petty doesn’t make it out of this game in one piece and the Jets are forced to go to Hackenberg?
  • Keep an eye on the Rams vs. Seahawks game this week.  A Rams win would go a long way in knocking Seattle out of playoff competition, moving the Jets up several spots in the draft with the second-round pick they acquired in the Sheldon Richardson deal.
  • Speaking of draft position, there are plenty of games that can  move the Jets up and down within the top-10 over the next three weeks.  Take a look here.
  • However long Petty is able to stay healthy, it could mean even more production out of Robby Anderson.  The two built a good rapport last pre-season and carried that on when Petty was inserted down the stretch as Anderson saw a significant jump in his targets with Petty pulling the trigger.
  • Where have you gone Austin Seferian-Jenkins?  Following a hot start that saw him haul in 48 catches in his first 8 games, the tight end has just 5 catches in his last three contests and hasn’t scored a touchdown since week 7.
  • This quote from Jamal Adams didn’t raise as many eyebrows as one might have expected, but it’s hardly a ringing endorsement of how the Jets practices are being run.
  • If this statement from Josh McCown didn’t make you feel for the guy, we’re pretty sure you don’t have a soul.

I very strongly hope Bowles is forced to go to Hack (though hopefully not due to injury).  I'm not a Petty believer and I do want to see what (if anything) we've got with Hack.  It makes me angry that the premise of the article is that the only way we'll see Hack is if Petty gets hurt.  If Hack is going to be a pro QB he's going to have to deal with adversity.  I guess it's somewhat understandable the Jets don't want to crush the guy's psyche after he dealt with a horrific OL in college but the situation is what it is.  Pro QBs are going to have to deal with pressure.

Josh McCown the latest to experience the Jets' QB curse

A broken left hand put an end to the veteran's bid for what would have been the first wire-to-wire quarterback season for the team since 1980.

THIS is what the priorities for this mickey mouse billshut is?!?!

Well I guess I have no soul. You gotta be kidding me. What the hell is this?! And what happened to football?! Or MEN ffs

The Jets placed quarterback Josh McCown on Injured Reserve and promoted running back Akeem Judd to the active roster. The Green & White also signed running back Jahad Thomas and quarterback Joel Stave to the practice squad.

McCown broke his left hand in the third quarter against the Broncos Sunday. Through 14 games, the 38-year-old threw for 2,926 yards, 18 touchdowns and nine interceptions. His 67.3% completion percentage ranks third in the NFL. McCown also rushed for five scores, which is tied for first among quarterbacks.

Judd signed to the Jets’ practice squad Oct. 24 after the Titans released him. The Ole Miss product originally joined Tennessee as a 2017 undrafted free agent and spent the preseason there before injuring his thumb. The 5’10”, 225-pounder started 24 games for the Rebels and rushed for 1,251 yards and nine touchdowns with an average of 5.2 yards a carry.

Being forced to watch Hackenberg piss his pants for two and a half games would really be the perfect sh*t cherry on this sh*t sundae of a season, wouldn’t it

No. The cherry will be when even after watching that, Chris Johnson still gives Macc an extension.

Coach; You ready

Hack: I don't know coach there pretty big  guys out there and the one guy is looking at me funny

Coach: Coach Bowles said you have no choice

Hack: "Can I at least get some color-coded wristbands?"

Coach: "Are color-coded wristbands gonna make you more accurate?"

*Hack looks down, shuffles his feet in the turf, and meekly replies: "No, coach."

Coach: "That's right, Christian. They won't... So that's a no."

Offensive lineman Geoff Gray terminated his practice squad contract to sign with another team.

Former @umbisons and #Bombers draft pick Geoff Gray has signed a standard rookie contract with the Cleveland #Browns  according to his agent Darren Gill. Joins their 53 man roster. Not guaranteed to dress but gets full pay check.

The Browns have waived DE Tyrone Holmes and WR Bryce Treggs. They signed OL Geoff Gray from the Jets practice squad. Gray is a rookie from Manitoba College in Canada.

CFL lowdown.  The one guy out of that group who has a shot if given a chance is Kenny Ladler , all CFL team and he has played for my home town team the last two years.  He is a very good player, good instincts, always around the ball, good tackler, is in on turnovers.  The rest are all decent cfl players but I don't think they will do much for the jets.

The guy I wanted the Jets to check out is WR brandon Zylstra who i think is going to be a thelin clone.  And of course the vikings are the guys that are trying him out.

Think I posted this somewhere last week...Jets worked him out last week.

Receiver Brandon Zylstra worked out for the New York Jets on Tuesday.

He led the CFL with 1,687 receiving yards on 100 receptions adding five touchdowns in 2017 and was named a 2017 all-star. The 24-year-old broke onto the scene with 508 yards in six games last year.

JETS tryout: WR Brandon Zylstra. VISIT: C Leo Koloamatangi.

http://edmontonsun.com/sports/football/cfl/edmonton-eskimos/no-award-for-eskimos-receiver-zylstra-but-season-outstanding-nonetheless

Following college, Zylstra moved to Arizona to train with former teammate Griffin Neal. While in Arizona, he attracted the interest of CFL teams during tryouts and was signed by the Edmonton Eskimos to a two-year contract.  In his first season in the league Zylstra made a quick impact, catching 34 passes for 508 yards with 3 touchdowns in only six regular season games. In two playoff games he caught six passes for 108 yards. He was named the Eskimos rookie of the year for the 2016 season. Zylstra had an outstanding 2017 campaign, leading the CFL in receiving yards with 1,687 (225 ahead of second place S.J. Green). He played a bog role in both of the Eskimos playoff games as well, catching 12 passes for 221 yards with one touchdown. He was named a CFL All-Star after the conclusion of the season.

too slow?

The 6-foot-3, 220 pound receiver recorded a 36-inch vertical jump and a 40-yard dash time of 4.64 seconds in a regional combine in Arizona last month, and recorded nearly identical numbers with a 34-inch vertical jump and a 40-yard dash time of 4.6 seconds at NDSU’s Pro Day in Fargo, N.D. earlier this month. Zylstra also bench-pressed 225 pounds 16 times.

I did not see that , thanks for posting.  This gives me more hope for the Jets.  This player is very much like theilin, and I'm not saying that because he is the standard lanky white guy.  He has good hands, can go short or deep and most important of all he gets open.

As for speed, imo it is one of the most overated things for most receivers.  Not every receiver is looked at as a take the top off the defense player.  Guys like Landry and bolden and such never were burners.
