Have we seen Petty's ceiling?

Petty completed only 50% or so of his passes. Didn't throw the ball downfield a lot, and still is doing what he always does, which is aim for the receivers instead of throwing timing passes. Didn't really show good instincts or accuracy.

the question is, will he get better with enough time or have we seen enough from him?

Petty is already 26, 27 before next season starts, so the question is how much more time can you give him to develop? Or are you better just giving Hack a shot of drafting somebody else.

We are going to see Petty 2 more weeks.  If the performance continues, that will be the last we see of him in a Jets uniform.

I like Petty, but when your a 4th round pick you only get so many chances.

And when you are second round pick you get none, right? That’s how this works.

Petty needs to find a team to play for that does not hate his freaking guts. Start there.

How do the Jets hate his guts? They made him earn playing time. McCown beat him out. He beat out Hack. So now he is the next man up.

But the look on Robby Anderson's face kind of tells it all. Dude looks like he wants to murder him with these bounces and overthrows.

Petty isn"t good.  it's not Mac's fault, it's not Bowles Fault, it's not Fitzpatrick or McCown's fault..

Frankly, by all accounts, it's not his fault (he's worked hard) He's just not an NFL caliber player (not even a back up) I don't care who drafted him, where he was drafted or who coached hime he simply doesn't have the skill set to compete at this level.

Could see the frustration with Kearse too. That's why it's hard to evaluate a team with such terrible QB play. As much as we hated McCown playing, it made sense from a GM side of things.

Usually 5 starts in, 3 systems in 4 years, is enough to determine ones ceiling. Jetsfansknowbest

Exactly. Jets fans are so brilliant about nothing. Petty is auditioning for his next team.

They wonder why the Pats win every year????  It is called patience.

I wanted the kids to play all year. But you can see why it didn't happen. Bowles did the right thing. Unless they gave him a guarantee to be back next year, which they didn't, he had no choice but to play McCown. I definitely underestimated what they could get out of McCown. Pretty impressive for Morton actually.

Look, as much as everyone is going to be upset if one win pushes us 4/5 spots back in the draft, the benefit to playing McCown is that it allowed us to evaluate other players like Kearse, Anderson etc.

As for Petty, his mechanics are horrendous.  He looks either hurt or that he simply does not have fluid athleticism to be a functioning QB.  He lower body is literally a disaster as far as consistency in footwork and stepping into his throws.

Id love to see this organization play Hack.

I don't understand the Petty love that some show for the guy.  He lit it up against 2nd and 3rd stringers in pre-season and that's about it.  The guy that I want to see in there is Hack.  Even if Hack stinks I feel like he has a higher ceiling than Petty.  Maybe Hack will ultimately end up being garbage too but I'd rather give the unknown (Hack) a chance than the known (Petty - who stinks).

It's not a debate for me any more, Petty is gone, plus he's a backup at best, ala Kellen Clemons.

Hack may hang around another year? - if Macc's not fired , if so has the third QB on the roster.

They give him 3rd year, so deflect the embarrassing over drafting of him.

Really it's about who we draft and can draft. We've only half tanked so our ceiling is Baker Mayfield, maybe Jackson? - Some goon GM's going to be stupid enough to fall for Josh Allen, and his physical tools, and not his real QB skills. I just hope it isn't ours?

Robby Anderson should ask who is responsible for getting the backup ready to play. Seems nobody heard of a back up QB before n this team We started ours all season, didn’t dress another and when we played one he looked thoroughly unprepared to be out there.

I would like to see Hack in at least one of these last two games.  Lets see if Hack is really worse then Petty.  At this point another loss isn't a bad thing.

It should be this coming game because if he shows promise, he'll have another week to play.  This franchise makes me sick though because you know they'll come up with some excuse for Petty to play the rest of the way ("he's next man up!")

So true. If Rich Gannon said it once yesterday on the broadcast, he said it ten times. Every time Petty would bounce a throw, the comment "don't make the easy things hard" came out.  For a 3rd year guy, 19-39 vs a mediocre defense at best, with a running game that had 124 yards, his performance was pretty sad. Bowles said it best...."we needed him to make plays and he didn't." No way in hell hack is as bad as Petty.

That's the scary thing - Petty is horrendous - that wasn't even NFL back-up level play - I suspect he will be out of the league next year.  If Hack were better he would be 2 on the depth chart - he's not.

Neither should be on the team in 2018.
