It’s from the daily news

Muhammad Wilkerson's career with the Jets is coming to an embarrassing end. The Daily News has learned that Gang Green has no intention of playing the mercurial defensive lineman against the Chargers on the Sunday.

The organization has been working through legalities (associated with the collective bargaining agreement), which have slowed down the process. The Jets would be reckless to play Wilkerson in the final two games of the season given the parameters of his contract. His $16.75 million base salary for 2018 is guaranteed for injury only at the moment. (It won't be fully guaranteed until the third day of the new league year in March.)

Therefore, the team would be on the hook for that full amount if Wilkerson suffered a grievous injury before the end of the regular season. It makes absolutely no financial sense for the team to expose themselves to such risk for a player they are getting rid of after the season.

There's a feeling of annoyance on One Jets Drive surrounding this saga. People in the building simply want this to be over. They're fed up with Wilkerson, who has underachieved on the field and embarrassed the organization off it since signing his monster five-year contract before the 2016 season.

Not only do they want Wilkerson not to practice anymore (he barely practiced all week and didn't participate in pivotal practice sessions, according to people familiar with the situation), but some want him banned from the team facility.

Wilkerson's claim this week that he's a "leader" and "earned everything I've gotten" was viewed as high comedy on One Jets Drive.

"He lives in his own world," a team source said.

The Jets weren't particularly thrilled that Wilkerson's agent Chad Wiestling tried to frame a narrative that painted Bowles as the bad guy, either. Let's just say that folks in the organization used many four-letter words to describe Wiestling's underhanded tactic aimed at the head coach.

It remains unclear whether the Jets will deactivate Wilkerson against the Chargers or dress him and simply not play him during the game. Either way, he won't be a Jet for much longer.

It makes sense. I thought they might play him but due to potential injury it's smart not to. The whole thing is mostly about money. And wanting to get out of that bad deal. Not sure if the Jets would consider re-doing the contract and keeping him for less money.

Oh stop! 85% of Jet fans were in favor of resigning Wilkerson, I can confidently say I wasn't one of them & continually expressed my concern that his sacks came in bunches & he disappeared A LOT!

I was against it because of the largeness of the contract and the fact that MO was coming off of a significant injury. He had broken his leg I think it was the last game of that previous year. And  Mac signed him to the deal during the off season. And the results were that his play diminished. They should have either given him a short term contract like one year or let him go. You never sign a guy to a big contract after an injury like that without him even playing one game. It was stupid.

Stop what? The only thing that should be stopped is Macc from being able to spend a dime in the offseason. He’s been a tire fire.

I chalk it up to a learning experience.  This new regime has made mistakes, mostly in the first two years.  This offseason will show us if they have learned or not because I think this year has been somewhat clean.  Let's hope they've learned.

I was in favor of resigning Mo, I think having this opt out clause is why we needed to pay him $53M in guarantees. The deal also saved us $6M last year instead of using the franchise tag, allowing us to push one more year for the playoffs before cutting all the vets. I blame Mo for his issues more than I blame Macc for signing him.

Tannenbaum & Idzik left us with so few starting draft picks that Mo & Winters were the only players Macc felt were worth resigning & they were overpaid because of it. Enunwa is the only other player worth keeping & he got injured. There was a lot of work to do & barely anything to work with. Macc will get 1 more chance with 95 million after Mo, Forte & Skrine are gone. Hopefully the Seahawks miss the playoffs, a mid extra 2nd could be huge in rebuilding our Oline or finding a tremendous stud RB that falls.

I admit it is scary to think Mac has a ton of money to spend because he's rather unproven himself.  This whole team is unproven.  I am against the crowd on this one because I have faith he knows what to do this time.  He knows he needs a QB and after watching this season, he (hopefully) knows he can't bargain for one and make it worth it.  Other than that, who knows.

At least they created an escape hatch in the contract and are going to right their wrong by releasing him...I mean people act like this has never happened to any other organization. Haynesworth/Redskins? Hey, he had a 12 sack season and was viewed as a great character before all this. I’m not mad. Just do the right thing and get rid of this bum.

Excited for all the articles praising Maccagnan for “changing the culture” by releasing a guy he gave $53 million.

Presumably better than keeping him and giving him $69 million, right?

Mo's failure is on Mo.  Not on Macc.

What happened to him is exactly what happened to Haynesworth, are defensive linemen more prone to dogging it after securing a big contract?

Has Snacks dogged it?

No need to generalize, blame the person.  This is on Mo and Mo alone.

For sure. Also the contract is on Mo

Because his production to that point hadn't earned it?

And if Mo had been let go and kept up that production, you wouldn't be here now complaining, right?

Damned if you do, damned if you don't as a GM.  But the failure to play or try is 100% of Mo.

It was more like 95% being outright giddy about extending Mo..  many of which are now acting as if they knew all along Mo would do this lol.

Once again - good on Macc for making it easy to escape after 2 years.

mercurial is not the right word to describe a slug.

When the Wilkerson re-signing was discussed a few seasons ago, the media guy most adamant that he had to be resigned was one Manish Mehta. Yes, cutting bait now makes good sense, but that this douchebag would now pretend he knew this all along is utter BS.

hindsight is 20-20.  as has been stated on numerous occasions the right plan would've been to franchise him.  then at least he's playing for a contract in 2016 and his play would've garnered him a lower priced contract.

Sad but it’s for the best. I think he’s been pissed since he didn’t get paid sooner. Should have gotten rid of him once he was injured. Another indication that this GM is clueless. Mac is WACK.

Of course it did. I was a vocal supporter of the extension at the time. But he’s always had a rep for loafing and I don’t think it’s unreasonable for the GM to be able to see that.

Yes, if everything about the last two years had been different, my feelings about the last two years would also be different.

Report: Jets plan to bench Muhammad Wilkerson again on Sunday

Last week Jets coach Todd Bowles left defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson at home for the team’s trip to New Orleans. This week the Jets aren’t sayingwhether Wilkerson will play at home against the Chargers, but a report indicates he won’t.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the Jets aren’t planning to play Wilkerson.

That’s partially because they don’t want to risk an injury that would force them to pay his $16.75 million base salary for 2018, and partly because they’re not happy with the way he has conducted himself. Wilkerson has reportedly been late for work repeatedly and generally shown a poor work ethic. The report even says some within the Jets don’t want Wilkerson at the facility at all, opening up the possibility that he could be either suspended if he has done something that could be construed as conduct detrimental to the team, or just told to say home if the Jets just want to be done with him.

One thing that seems very clear is the Jets will cut Wilkerson this offseason. He’ll be a free agent and he’ll see whether he can convince some team that he won’t alienate his coaches the way he has with the Jets.

For once, just once, I’d like to have a GM that trades guys for a nice price at the right time, rather than being good at getting out of big contracts the GM himself created.

Instead, we always seem to have a GM that gets clowned by just about every other front office in the league, and competes against no one to sign players to bad contracts.
