How do you sell this to the fanbase?

A lot of people think that Mac and Bowles coming back is a forgone conclusion, but is it?

Football is a business, and it seems interest in Jets football is approaching all time lows.

It is easy to say that it is the record, but I think it is deeper than that.

The Jets play boring football.

Not only are we losing but we are losing in an uninteresting way. We have no stars, no offense, a cardboard cutout for head coach.

If I am the owners, I realize we may still not win for a year or 2 but we need to be more exciting.

If you bring back Bowles, you are selling the fanbase more of the same. Bowles will push for defense in the draft, we will sign McClown or some other JAG, and we will once again strive to win games

That is a very very hard sell.

Maybe this is the year when the owners desire to put an entertaining product on the field and the opportunity to do that. And the first step is dumping Bowles and Mac and bringing in an offensive mindset.

Then go out an get a QB that is the face of the franchise. Mayfield, Garopollo if SF does not exclusive franchise tag him, or even give up 3 ones for Rosen or Darnold. No to Allen and especially Cousins.

Dont sell the fanbase the same dull team, clean house and be bold.

2 double digit loss, unwatchable, boring as all f**k, conservative, quit in some games, penalty filled seasons. 3-2 turned to 2-9. The coaches and / or players quit on each other as many times this season as they did last. The only difference this season was that we did not get obliterated in as many games as we did last season, nothing else has changed. It is the same pile of boring dreck game after game, so much so I do not want to watch anymore! Today was painful to sit and watch. If it weren't for the RZC I would have fallen asleep. I think us fans deserve better then what we are getting. Whether it is the fault of the CS, GM players or a combination thereof, ownership's commitment to winning is nonexistent.

I mean.  A top draft pick and 100mil?  But 5-10 just blows.  Petty/Hack should have started all season.

Exactly.  There would be light at the end of the tunnel.  Now we're probably going to pick between 7-9.

The FA landscape isn't as exciting as it's been the last few years.  Jets aren't going to give Trumaine Johnson the kind of contract he wants...  no great O-lineman...  D Freeman will be a FA but over paying for him would be a mistake..  no dynamic WR's...

the more I look at it the more I think we're going to be a major player for Cousins.  I think he's the target.

This doesn’t apply to you because you’ve been consistent in wanting us to tank, but most of the start-Petty brigade wanted him to start because they really thought he was potential franchise QB material. That was their basis for thrashing Bowles - that he was starting an inferior QB in McCown.

The current QB situation and this season’s results are Maccagnan’s fault.

Fair enough.

Bowles is simply not the guy. Our stadium was half empty today and by halftime I saw hundreds and thousands of people going home.

This is the main reason why I won’t be a season ticket holder. I love this team with everything I got but are they worth it? The waking up early, preparing all the food, driving 1.5 hours to the game, driving 1.5 back all for a team who puts me to sleep? Bowles has to go!!

At least our head coach has only quit on the team twice this year though.

Unfortunately, the games are sold out for years in advance so there is little the fans can do to let asleep at the wheel ownership their feelings unless the guy who hired the plane a few years back still has some money for a second time around. That is what frustrates me more than ANYTHING is that it always takes Woody Johnson a year too long to do the right thing.

I'd really prefer going with a rookie.  Even if it's the 5th QB off the board.

Don't get me wrong, Cousins is good.  Not elite or anything, but usually pretty good.  And he'd be a tremendous upgrade now.

But that would instantly put us in "win now" mode I think.  Spending/wasting money on Forte-types.

I'd rather not go that route.

Hell even if it meant saving most of the cap space if no good FAs were available.  Just get a young QB with potential, sure up the oline even just a little bit and I'm happy.

Bulls and Mac have both done enough to be fired. The problem is they're not getting anyone better. So they're both going to get next year to see what they do with the money and in the draft.

This team needs a quarterback.

This is a fair point. Looks like the worst case scenario is they could get the fourth quarterback off the board, maybe third if things go right draft wise.

I don't understand why this team will never give a veteran offensive minded head coach a shot. Or a young, offensive coordinator.

The game is built on offense now. You've got to be able to move the ball and sling it around the field.

I'm not saying fire Bowles, but if they did, I want an offensive coach. The Jets are so insistent on defensive coordinators being given their first head coaching job. That's the only way they go and so far, it hasn't worked. It's been this way since Groh. Why not try something different? Especially if you are going to potentially draft a young QB.

Even better.  3rd or 4th QB.   Sure up the oline a bit so the kid doesn't get killed.  Let him learn on the job in 2018.  Then come 2019, still have massive amounts of cap space to then go try to really win.

Of course there's always the hope the rookie is so good we can win in 2018, but I'm just being realistic.

The Jets have a young 5-11 team that was in every single game and could have easily won many more.

When you take that team and give it a new QB (doesn’t matter whether it’s free agency or the draft), spend $100mil in free agency, and pad it with high draft picks it’s really not hard to see everybody being excited heading into next season.

The '96 Jets were in most of their games.  That team needed a new identity- not necessarily a new QB.  Cigar Store man is not getting it done, inspires no one and does anyone at Florham Park actually believe if you gave him a rookie QB to groom he would bring out the best in that QB?

I will bet my next paycheck Bowles and Mac are back. The way they gut the roster was a nod to moving ahead together. Plus they wouldn’t want to be in the market for a hq this year when possibly 13 teams will be.

Great post...thank you.

Any rational fan understands this - while it hasn't been a great season there is certainly plenty of reason to be excited about the future.

With that said, if they don't draft a QB in the 1st round - then I would completely agree with every PO'd fan.  You do whatever it takes to get the best QB you can.  With $100mm in cap space you can afford to trade away draft picks....

Get the QB and you have 15 years to build a team around him.
