Todd Bowles says he might give Hackenberg some playing time against NE

Maybe he noticed Petty shaking his arm and hand several times this past Sunday?

For argument sake, say Petty gets creamed and then Hackenberg also gets hurt (a la the Jaguars game in '05), there used to a be a rule that allowed a team to dress the 3rd QB if inactive and the other two QB's get hurt. Does that still exist?

Otherwise you need a Tom Matte, which in this case should be Bilal

A long shot question but considering the o-line these days, maybe not so much

Sounds like Hack will actually get in there.  The thing that really drives me crazy is - what if he shows some promise.  We could've had him playing for 3 weeks.  Instead we'll probably see him for maybe 1 quarter?  Maybe less?   Again, if he shows promise then we have to wait another whole year before we get to see the guy again.  If Bowles was going to consider playing him then he effed things up completely.  These are non-playoff-related games for us.  This CS is an absolute joke.

Btw, the Chiefs are starting Pat Mahomes this week.

Imagine if Christian Hackenberg is the franchise QB this organization has yearned for since Joe Namath left.

$100 million in cap money.

Draft picks.

We could bulld a playoff caliber team this year.

And THIS is why Mac AND Bowles should be fired the second the season ends - Mac for drafting Hackenberg and then punting on a QB the following year knowing how bad Hack was and Bowles for not at least giving Hackenberg a legitimate look during the last two seasons in order to either confirm his putridness or to give the organization a glimmer of hope.

Todd Bowles, New York Jets: After 14 years of working his way up the ladder from position coach, to defensive coordinator to head coach, Todd Bowles exceeded all expectations with the Jets in Year 1: 10-6. They missed the playoffs on the final day of the regular season, a gut-wrenching loss to the Bills. Since then, it’s been downhill. They went 5-11 last year, the locker room was toxic, and they’ve gutted the roster. A bleak year is ahead. They’ll win between zero and two games, and then the Jets will get the #1 pick and Bowles will probably be fired. Here’s the worst part: People are rooting for the Jets to fail because they want the #1 pick. I can’t imagine a scenario where the Jets, after consecutive years of getting increasingly worse, keep Bowles. Bowles is a lifelong defensive coach, and since they’ll draft a QB first, the team should want to get a bright young offensive coach just in case Sam Darnold is thinking about staying at US

Might as well. Petty sucks, and we need to lose this final game if there's any hope of securing a decent draft position.

I'm hoping this game shows that Hack is the QB of the future. Realistically, it will probably reveal once and for all why he shouldn't be in the NFL.

I thought they did give him a chance by starting him in the preseason with and against first stringers but he did not show well and even dropped behind Petty. It looked like the plan was for the two younger QB's to battle for the starter and when they both failed they had no choice but to go with the vet with a heavy sigh all around

But when asked if Hackenberg could see action in the game, the Jets coach replied, "We'll see."

Sounds more like..."Doubt it but hey, who the hell knows"

I've watched 90% of Bowles' press conferences since he's been here.

His "we'll see" is as good as him saying "yes".

Granted, Hackenberg has not shown any signs in two preseasons that he can be an NFL QB, but in a season where it was obvious we were not going to be a playoff contender, it was a perfect opportunity for the organization to find out if Hackenberg and Petty can play at an NFL level in regular season games. This was a lost opportunity with ZERO downside. Worst case scenario would have been both QB’s played poorly enough to get us a top 2 pick.

Agreed. I think Hack is FINALLY going to get his debut.  It's an absolute joke though because what are we going to be able to tell in less than 1 game?  The most I can see him getting is 1/2 half of football but, more than likely, it'll be even less than that.

Yes, we had 3 weeks but Hack is likely only going to see a small piece of 1 game.  Basically he'll get his feet wet so the organization can avoid the embarrassment of "how bad must Hack be to not even get a chance when playing behind the atrocious Petty?" questions.   Maybe Hack will get some garbage time and Bowles can say "he was next man up" or some other BS.  I have really soured on this CS.  Bowles needs to go.  I know the Jets will try to sell us on "he won 10 games 2 years ago!" but look at how the Giants operate.  Their HC won double-digit games a year ago and he's already out the door not even a full season later.  It's time for Jet ownership to start demanding that the franchise start to legitimately shape up.

Unfortunately it's far too late for Hack to show that.  Even if he started the game and played well, what would that prove?  Are we going to not draft a QB because of a 1 game trial run?  There were plenty of chances to play Hack but this CS chose not to give him a chance.  It will be far more irritating to me if Hack does play well, btw, because we won't get a chance to see him again until training camp next year.  This CS is a total joke.

How is Hack going to prove it to us in less than 1 game though?  This CS could've given him a minimum of 3 weeks as a starter.  Instead Bowles was busy surrendering.

They saw enough of Hack in practice to know they made a terrible mistake even drafting him

Ok Todd, cool

Whatever the score is, don't bring him in unless you are going to throw on 1st down and go up tempo

Throwing him out there in a run, run, pass scenario will do more harm than good

Oh right - imagine he gets in during garbage time in the 4th quarter and literally hands the ball off every play?  That wouldn't surprise me in the least.
