Burnt Out

I've been less interested in the team and football in general this year, but I've still maintained a pretty decent level of engagement... Until 2 or 3 weeks ago. That's when I was suddenly hit with an almost overwhelming sense of apathy and disinterest in the NFL. In past years when we hit December and the Jets weren't heading to the playoffs I still found myself reading the news, looking at the playoff teams, trying to figure out who I think would win, and looking ahead to the offseason... But that's not happening this year.

Maybe it's because of the holidays or the cold weather or other interests taking up my time, but my interest just fell off a cliff. I've had almost no reaction to any NFL games or news. I can feel my eyes glaze over when someone starts talking about football.

I figured it was just me but in talking with a handful of people, including a few friends who have teams heading to the playoffs, they too felt this sense in the last few weeks of just being burnt out on the NFL.  It made me think that maybe this season was more grueling in a lot more ways than just on the field. More than people really thought... I think a lot of what happened around the league on and off the field this year has just dug some fans like myself into the ground. It's not entertaining. It's tiring and a bit boring.

Curious if anyone else is in this boat with me. I suppose if you're browsing a team forum you have some level of interest; but I'm curious if anyone else has found their interest fade as their indifference grows.

Amazingly he became disinterested when the Jets were eliminated from playoffs.  Shocking

I mean, I mentioned that in the thread. But it's cool, reading is hard.

In non-Jet playoff years past I've at least been excited about the offseason. I've planned playoff get togethers. Still read the news. Still checked the mock drafts and college football games. But not so much this year. Really just lost interest in it all.

Nope, not me.  I do find casual fans are talking about the sport less, but I find that to be a good thing.

Honest question, even if it's not just Jet related, but what's keeping you interested? I can't get hooked on any of the current story-lines.

Sorry youre a front runner who cant just enjoy the games unless theres the chance of playoffs.  Thats the point.  Youre a casual fan looking for others on the same boat, got it, just dont care about fans who think like this.  Do find it interesting that they would come out and tell everyone what bad fans they are

Ok... Again... 2 posts now that contradicts that, but run with the narrative you want, I guess.

Tankathon for the 2018 Draft has kept my interest the whole year.

The college Bowl games are like the playoffs for the draft. The Draft is the ultimate Super Bowl where the worst team in football wins. It's entertaining while we wait for the next Joe Willie to swagger in the front door of Jets history.

Contradicts what?  Youre a half assed fan, reduced to front running.  So?

Holy goodness...

Let me try again.

In years past I've been fine and happy being a year round fan of not just the Jets but the NFL. I've absorbed every playoff game, every superbowl, every offseason mock draft special, every forum post and podcast. And loved it all.

This year I'm not feeling it. And this was all about seeing if anyone else had the same vibe this year.  If that makes me a "half assed" fan this year, then cool.

But this year just feels different than the last decade, was the point.

A simple 'nope, not me.' would be fine. But for some reason people on the internet like to look for fights and be condescending. It's ok not to do that sometimes.  Sometimes it's ok to not jump all over people :) Happy holidays.

There wasn't a single question mark in your teary eyed post. My interest has not waned. I am not a fair weather fan.

How about in the NFL as a whole though? In the past I've been engrossed with the goings on of the league on top of the team news... Just can't find that string this year.

Its ok, it is what it is.  Not jumping on anyone who loses interest.  Happens.  Half assed as in not fully into it isnt the end of the world, its just the current state of interest, bet it comes back when the wins come back.

I love Football, so I pretty much will watch it if it's on TV but I watch way more college ball then NFL these days.  The NFL is trash and the Jets suck, so I could give 2 sh*ts about watching the Patriots play the Steelers in the AFCC and win another Super Bowl while they're clearly still cheating and paying off refs and nobody gives a sh*t. Roger Goodell has ruined the league from that perspective.  But I assume most people are like me and still love the game and watch because we only gets 16 weeks of it and the NFL playoffs are still exciting.

Quite honestly, as a Jets fans, this is my favorite time of the year because the Jets suck and are never in the hunt so we can start talking about the draft.  And while it's all but guaranteed the Jets **** it up, it's still fun to talk about it because I love college Football and the guessing game of who will make it in the NFL.

It'll probably swing back when we get closer to the draft, I imagine. This is just the real first time I've shrugged my shoulders at the NFL in a long time. I posted because it caught me off guard, and I had a few people around the office (non-jet fans) agree with me about the "vibe" of the NFL lately. So I just wanted to see how the board was feeling. Just taking the pulse!

Cool cool, thanks... Ya see that was me a lot in the past years. Even if we weren't fighting for that top 10 pick, I was still engrossed in college football games, analysis, mock draft databases, podcasts, and all the rest... And I still was up until a little while ago.

I tried watching a couple bowl games the last few days and I just couldn't get into it... In past years I'd be Googling the guys the analysts were raving about on air, but this year (so far) I've just had very little desire to do that.

Playoff hopes for the Jets or not, it was like a switch flipped. So I was just curious if it had happened to anyone else this year. Again, not just the Jets, but just the NFL as a whole entity. I'm glad to hear you're still in it! It's more fun.

Funny, I thought I would feel the same way before the season started.  Figured I would just pull away while the rebuild was in full swing.  But I got interested enjoying the young players.  They play hungry and are a nice change of pace from the fat, lazy vets from a year ago who didnt seem to care.  The young guys, from Adams on down never bought into the suckage predicted have been fun to watch.  No matter what the trolls report

Bruh, in years past, a younger, lesser mature, and narrower me would tell you something like "man up" or some Neanderthal idiocy along those lines.

Truth is though, this same thing happened to me as well. I know no Jets / football fan bigger than me. I wore 31 in HS & College because I idolized Aaron Glenn. Had I gotten the chance to play QB, I would have worn 7 for Kenny O. When I transferred for my senior college season and 31 was already taken, 12 was available. I sure as hell didn't wear it for Tom Brady.

But the fact is I've literally fallen asleep watching so many football games this year I started to worry for my health. This made no sense to me at all. Got checked out by the doctor, told me everything is fine, my energy level for a guy in his late 30s is awesome. I just had to come to grips with the fact that perhaps, I may have outgrown this toy. It still brings me pleasure to watch a Jets game, and a physical football game between 2 teams who know what the hell they are doing is still as beautiful as Da Vinci's finest artwork. However, it just doesn't have that pull on me like it once did. I work by appointments and if I get called in during a game, leaving it this year to go make a couple extra $$$ was a no brainer. Prior years, I'd do everything in my power to see my Sundays and Monday nights went uninterrupted.

I often wonder why this is. I'm an old school, smashmouth (but efficient and deadly though the air) football kinda guy. Yes my favorite era was 80s-90s. The spread hit college and at first it was cool because it was just another system some teams ran. Gradually, the veer triple option programs and pro-set programs all became spread option / Air Raid teams. Around 2007 / 2008 I began to realize I was watching street football with an OL mixed in. Same similar formations, same basic plays, same boring run plays. Drive... after... drive.  Soon after I turned off the college game for good, it bores me to tears. Variety IS the spice of life.

So here we are, and we're seeing the spread creep it's way more and more into the NFL and my biggest fear is all the old coaches being replaced by these young spread guys and the NFL in 5-10 years begin to resemble street football. It's already happened in NE for the last 5 years or so. Elimination of the FB, the 2-way TE, Nickel & Dime packages run 75% of the game... sorry this isn't football to me. When some damn 5'9" 175 lb slot WR is the difference maker, well that's not the football I want to be entertained by. I'm watching full padded football in an NFL stadium, not a pick up game in Rucker Park.

My last point though, goes back to what I said earlier about toys. I don't know anyone (including myself) who can pinpoint that moment where we took that step out of childhood by no longer picking up those toys of ours and losing ourselves in our imagination. All I know is that one day I realized I no longer was holding Optimus, Grimlock, Flint, Snake Eyes, Battle Cat, and other of my favorites in my hand to provide me that escape. My mind had moved on to other things and I had no issue with it. No longer was my desire to play with toys even debatable. Maybe this is just what happens to us throughout our lives with our "toys." Heck, we can even wake up one day devoid of all emotion for the person who's sleeping right next to you (through no one's fault at all), and ya'll may have been sharing a bed for the last 15-20 years. If we can throw away humans we've become extremely intimate with, why is something as insignificant as a football team populated by people who you don't, and probably will never, know on any level, even considered sacred.

I'll keep watching, but whatever happens from this point on, happens.

I understand your feeling and I can relate.

I wasnt satisfied with my favorite team. Every ridiculous over-examination of a TD called back by refs just so happened to work out perfectly for the Patriots, with the latest one being the Kelvin Benjamin TD that isnt a TD anymore. I have friends and family who've wondered how/why I became a jets fan because they believe that watching Jets games are boring. Well, outside of losing most of the time, I never found the games boring...until this year. Jets football was dreadful to watch this year.

Who the hell enjoyed watching that Browns game, Bucs game, Broncos game, The Chargers game??? The only games that I actually watched the entirety of and felt good about it, meaning that I actually enjoyed the game was the Panthers game and the Kansas City game. The rest of this season was absolute trash and I often ended up either watching NFL Redzone during Jets games or changing to another game entirely.

This season was trash before it started. For me it started with the signing of McCown. Granted, McCown was a better QB than Petty, but for the fact that we're basically hoping a praying to see just a glimpse of Hack next week is just sad. This season was a tragedy not just for the team, but the NFL. These replays are destroying momentum, literally taking away points and its a disgrace when fans leave a stadium or finish watching a game on TV and feel like their team was cheated out of a game.

I remember last week having a discussion about the Jesse James Steelers TD against the Patriots last week and some folks were trying to overly explain why it wasnt a TD. Then this past week we have this against the Patriots. This explains how terrible this NFL season has been. Whats worse is to then listen throughout the week to guys like Chris Carter trying to damage control this nonsense.

I was pretty much done with this season also. I've not been satisfied with the product, the pretend parity, ref interference or any other nonsense that occurred this season.

I feel your pain. With that said, we're all waiting for the NFL draft which will reinvigorate every last one of us! :-)

That's the weird thing... I totally agree. I love watching the young guys!  The last time I remember getting that little jolt of excitement was a while back when the Jets ran out all 1st and 2nd year WRs for a play or two. That was a fun and hopeful feeling!

Thanks! Exactly! You did a much better job than I of summing up the feelings here.  I honestly can't pinpoint when things stated to fade for me with the NFL. I mentioned "a few weeks ago" in my original post but that's really just when it became noticeable to me. Chances are it's probably been fading for a while.

To your point it's sort of a bit striking to suddenly have this thing that you spent a ton of time and energy on become less interesting... And you're right about the relationship piece too. It's very similar. You have this person you've invested so much in, scheduled your life around, made plans with, adjusted who you are... And then one day that just starts to slip until it's gone. And it's hard to pinpoint why or how.

So still searching for those answers! Maybe it is just how the game has evolved (or devolved, you pick which!) and this season was just the first time I really felt it. Or maybe it's the way it's presented to us. Or the storylines and headlines we're fed... I really don't know. I'm still sort of analyzing it all myself.

Like I said, This is getting ridiculous...

There was no actual explanation, simply that the call was reversed. You can clearly see this dude catch the football and control it to the ground yet that's not a TD. Yet last week folks said that Jesse James needed to do "exactly that" for his TD to be a TD. Kelvin Benjamin does it and it's not a TD.

It's a joke and I've literally never seen plays like this happen over and over and over again to benefit the same team.

Ya see you touch on a couple things that I'm right there with.

First of all related to our team here, and then also to just the presentation the NFL throws at us. I think I'm just not that interested in either.

In the past I could find something to hang my hat on even for those games or days when the Jets stream was slow or nonexistent... Just basic NFL analysis, news articles, college football highlights, draft discussion... I could find something to get locked in on for a few hours a day. And I just can't find that! It's nice to hear I'm not crazy.

I mean I wish I could! I know people are calling me fair weather or a crybaby, and that's fine. But I do wish that I wasn't quite so empathetic. I didn't mean for any of this to be me complaining or whining. It's more looking for reasons and seeing who might be on the same page.

Obviously I'm still posting here so the interest isn't completely gone, but I miss the days even earlier this year when I would log on, scour the forum, find some mock drafts, read the injury and practice reports, check in on my favorite college players. All the things that are mostly seperate of the Jets themselves... And I just don't feel that! I sit down and start and just get disconnected. None of it's interesting.

But I do hope you're right about the draft! It's been mentioned a few times in this thread but I'm hoping maybe as that becomes the more dominating headline I'll rekindle my love for football. Maybe this is just a little rut we've fallen into... I'm just not used to it! It caught me so off guard to sit back and realize I didn't feel like reading the box scores.

Don't listen to the haters saying goodbye & stupid sh*t like that. The Jets coaching SUCKS! How Macc passed on Watson after witnessing this Petty sh*tshow these past 2 weeks & Hack can't even get on the field is mind boggling! Mo quit again, Lee has to be reprimanded, but the narrative is Bowles has everyone in line. On to the NFL in general, I'm starting to think it's like the WWF. These call reversals are insane! Just review the plays under the guise that's always been the rule (the call has to have clear & evident proof to overturn) it's SIMPLE, but somehow now that it goes to NY this azzhole overturns calls like the ASJ TD, and I just shook my head thinking, I don't care to watch this sh*t anymore. Your not alone, I've turned off more games than ever, my wife even noticed. I live in New England, so I get to see every Pats game & every controversial call. It is SO RARE for a call to go against the Patriots, this idea that Gronkowski lost his mind is such BS it's laughable. Gronk has been using his forearm to make space for himself since he's had that huge brace on his arm. Do people hang on him, sure, DBs, safeties, and LBs grab all the time. The Patriots winning for 20 years has exhausted opposing fans. The refs & a million flags are killing the flow. The constant commercials & over analyzation of the NFL is eating it from inside out. I think a lot of NFL fans are just sick of the sh*tty games, loads of sh*tty teams, sh*tty coaches, sh*tty product.
