SUPER SENSE: Jamal Adams

Another fluff piece but I enjoyed it. Also didn’t know his stats were as good as they are.(states in article)

Jamal Adams should add psychic powers to his many gifts that have already provided hope for a historically wayward franchise. Although the rookie safety didn't give an in-your-face poolside guarantee, he offered a glimpse of what he envisions each night: A Super Bowl for the New York Jets.

"I dream about it every day," Adams told the Daily News in a candid discussion about what lies ahead for this organization. "Every day. No question. Every day. Nothing like it. It would be a dream come true. I couldn't even tell you. But in the near future from my previous dreams, I think it will happen. I see it in the future. I'm like That's So Raven... I've seen the future. I see that. You know what I'm saying? I've seen the future, brother."

Adams lives by his grandmother's advice from long ago:You have a choice each morning to put a smile on your face.

So, it's nearly impossible to catch the 22-year-old without a grin. He can't help it. His energy is infectious. His passion for the only game he's ever truly loved is palpable. His fire is undeniable.

Adams made an immediate impact in his first year on the job, a versatile enforcer in Todd Bowles' defense with a great head on his shoulders thanks to his parents, George and Michelle. He is well-adjusted, smart and eternally optimistic about what lies ahead for his team. He genuinely wants to be a Jet, which should matter for an outfit scorned by others in the past.

"I want to be a part of a team that's ready to go out and capitalize on our potential," Adams said in the run-up to the season finale against the Patriots. "We have a lot of potential. We understand where we need to be at. We understand that when games come down to the end we got to finish in the fourth quarter. So, I'm a part of the right team. There's no other team or organization I want to be a part of. This is the right team. And it will be the right team."

How can you not love that attitude?

From random acts of kindness like giving a little Jets fan his cleats before last week's game to asking anyone and everyone in the locker room about their day, there's nothing phony about the guy. There are never strings attached. He's a breath of fresh air unafraid to break out into song or dance during or after practice if the mood strikes him. (Real talk: He could use a singing coach).

"He has a high motor," locker room neighbor Steve McLendon told the News. "He's very passionate about football. You can't take that away from the kid. That's the type of player he is. He's just going to have to learn to do that year in and year out. Keep that same passion. You got to understand when you get five or six years in, you have to still have that passion during the week that you have on gameday. Most guys still have that passion on gameday, but at practice it might change. But if he can keep that up, man, that's going to help not just him, but his teammates come out and practice fast, hard and always smart."

Adams has become a leader just by being himself. If you can't follow this guy's lead, you can't follow anyone's lead. His self-confidence and confidence in his teammates and coaches are evident. His father, whose NFL career with the Giants and Patriots spanned seven years, and mother, who still gets on him for not being the neatest person in the world, taught him well.

Adams has never flinched in the spotlight. He's gladly accepted the responsibility of helping lead this team out of the wilderness.

"I'm smiling," Adams said. "I'm good... Of course, I'm going to take on the challenge. I was drafted high, so you got come in ready to play, ready to go and make change. Create change. Take on leadership. It comes with it. It comes with the role. I've always been a leader from my previous teams. I embrace it."

Bowles, who agreed to a two-year contract extension through 2020 this week, and defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers have deployed Adams everywhere. His positional breakdown, per Pro Football Focus: linebacker (39%), safety (36%), cornerback (17%) and edge (8%). Adams, who has the second-most run stops among safeties (21), has stuffed the stat sheet with 73 tackles (six tackles for loss), five passes defensed (including one that lead to an INT for a teammate), two sacks, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.

Numbers, of course, are only a part of Adams' value to the team.

"His work ethic is through the roof," Rodgers said. "I've been around a lot of hard-working (players), but he's the total package. I think he's special."

Adams' self-confidence is unmatched. His recent tweet vowing never to miss another Pro Bowl (he's a third alternate this year) got the hot-take gotcha crowd whipped into a frenzy, but the Jets privately and publicly loved it.

"He's got a lot of drive," Bowles said of Adams' tweet. "You want that as a young player. You want to be the best at everything all the time. You have goals to reach. That makes him work harder to reach them."

Adams is far from a finished product. He needs to be more consistent with his eye discipline in coverage and more vocal to convey certain looks pre-snap, according to Bowles. His desire to learn and evolve is unquestioned.

"When he says that he is going to get better," Rodgers said, "He is going to get better."

But Adams isn't going to try to convince a fanbase conditioned to expect the worst.

"Right now, they're frustrated just like we're frustrated," Adams said. "We understand that we have not been in the playoffs for a while. They're sick of hearing us tell them what we're going to do. It doesn't need to be any talk about it. We need to go out and just do it. So next year is going to be a new year, new team, same dream. We're going to go out there and chase them."

Jamal Adams knows his dream will come true one day. The future is clear.

This is actually way more impressive than I expected given the way he’s talked about. That said he is a POS who cost the Jets Deshaun Watson. Likely he just compiled those stats to one day use it as leverage for money one day against us fans. The scum is so stupid he thinks he can trick us again. On top of it he is working for the stupidest people in the history of the world times ten plus infinity.

Oh and what’s this about him always smiling? The Jets haven’t won a SB in 50 years bro! ******* dwell on it! It’s like this guy never heard of Rich Kotite! It’s bullsh*t like this that weighs this franchise down.

It depends, I guess, on how much those stats matter and other factors. There are some important questions to ask:

- Was his heart yearning for personal or team glory during the acts?

- How many of those plays single handedly won a game?

- How much do those plays count given that they are not coming from a #PremiumPosition?

- How much was he getting paid?

If you answer these questions honestly this guy is showing early signs of compiling. Likely BOWELS was in on the charade in hopes of saving his job.

Anything can be TWISTED in various ways to cover the illusion, eg sports world, politics.  When I see Adams at his respective position I SEE a guy who cannot physically handle its specifics.  He is nowhere near the impact player I thought we would get at 6 like an Earl Thomas or Sean Taylor. I’d rather have Adam Ant play safety for us than J Adams.

Stop being morons...MORONS. The Jets defensive front is one of the weakest in the league with the fewest sacks. Give the Jets the Jaguars front & Adams will look even better.

This team get no pressure on 3rd downs! This is the NFL and more of a TEAM game. Every part of your teams play affects another part. Bad Oline, no run game, no pressure on the opposing QB affects your secondary play.

Adams & Maye based on their rookie play with a poor front (Our most expensive player has been f*cking benched & Leo has played with a bad wrist all year). Ooh..ooh, Adams can't stop Gronk so he's a bust, GTFOOH! Gronk might go down as the BEST TE IN THE HISTORY OF THE FREAKING GAME! All of you critics are gonna be eating your words when we get a pass rush.

No one is saying Adams isnt a good player. At least I'm not. Grabbing him at 6 was not the mistake everyone makes it out to be unless you have a greater need elsewhere. The Jets HAD a greater need elsewhere and it was at the most polarizing and visible position on the field. That coupled with the McCown signing had everyone thinking they were going to draft a young QB or play Hack. Turns out they did neither. This is why Adams is getting so much flack on this board. Its not his talent level or level of play its just that he isn't a QB. Does anyone seriously believe that if the Jets had taken Deshaun Watson and he tore his ACL while playing for them that guys on these boards would be pissed off saying "Damn we could've drafted Jamal Adams instead of this guy?" Probably not.

Wait on second thought the way a lot of these guys bitch and moan someone probably would have said it, but you get my point.

True true true with a great pass rush, Adams could break his cherry ? and nab his 1st NFL int. Meanwhile, Hooker had 3 int’s before being injured after 7 games behind that fearsome Colt DL. ?

I'm perfectly happy with Adams. Beyond the stats, his presence seems to be leading to a better locker room. Would I have preferred Watson at 6? Yes, but let's remember that Watson is now accumulating a growing list of significant injuries throughout his career (he has had knee injuries in the past).

Adams and Maye both had good years for rookie Safeties.  THey played well mostly, and got schooled somewhat often.

They'll be fine.

I wouldn't have picked either of them, tbqh, but they're fine enough players so far.

People are just judging too harshly because of how stupid this team drafting two safeties was, given our other needs.

While they might not have thought much about Adams.  I can assure you, many of the people hating the Adams pick - If they took Watson and he tore his ACL - many would also be ripping Mac apart for taking a guy he should known would have been easily injured.  He should have known running QB's get hurt, wasted pick, etc..

Many in this fan base and specifically this board just look for reasons to b-ch and moan.

Adams was a solid pick.

I agree about the importance of positions, but what's done is done & at least we know we have not 1 but 2 very good players in our secondary going forward. Same with Lee & Jenkins, are the great? Probably not, but they can be solid starters & what Macc needs to do is find a couple of GREAT players which will enhance what these guys can give us. The problem with our recent past drafts before Macc is that they ended up with very few starters & the guys they did find had other issues (Mo quit after his contract ext./Richardson was an azz/ Enunwa got injured & Winters is meh).

Yeah you're probably right but I still believe Adams gets the flack he does simply because of the whole QB VS S argument. Some guys just like to piss and moan I guess.

He played more snaps at linebacker. He is already better than fine or good.

Wait until they surround him with better talent next year. They say young players that have IT really develop in their 2nd year. Adams & Maye will strut into camp next year ready to take their play to another level, and I think they will based on their rookie years.

I'd love to see what the D will look like next year if it's true that Richardson actually DOES want to come back, and Macc gets a QB, and drafts Bradley Chubb. If you have an offseason where we grab a #1 corner in FA, resign Sheldon, and draft Chubb? Still leaves 3 picks in the top 80 players.

And today when Gronk beats one of them, they will piss and whine again.

As for comparing Watson and Adams, sane people would realize that Watson has played only 7 games. If he comes back from the injury, the NFL will adjust to him. We’ve seen it with Prescott. So in a year or two , it would be fair ground to make the comparison but not now

The "Pick Watson" crowd leading up to draft day was very minimal here at Jet Nation and I didn't see too much of outcry that we picked Adams over him on draft day.   It was only after he played impressively that people seem to now relate Adams to being picked over him.
