Coach Bowles Season-Ending Press Conference

Jets Head Coach Wraps Up the 2017 Season

Jets coach Todd Bowles declined to comment on whether he'd let OC John Morton out of his contract if presumptive Raiders coach Jon Gruden tries to hire him. "I don't deal in rumors," said Bowles, saying he'd have no comment until he hears it from a person in an official capacity. Morton got his first coaching from Gruden and considers him a mentor.

The Jets are interested in re-signing QB Josh McCown, per Todd Bowles. But that's far from a done deal. "Josh had a great year," Bowles said. "It would be great to have him back. It's business in this league. He has decisions to make, we have decisions to make. Hopefully, they can meet and we'll go from there." McCown, 38, hasn't committed to playing next season. The Jets refused to make him available to the media, citing a team rule in which players on IR aren't permitted to speak to the media.

Jets open to re-signing Josh McCown, but will he retire?

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Josh McCown 2.0?

The New York Jets would like to re-sign their starting quarterback, according to Todd Bowles, but that doesn't mean it will happen. As he said, "It's contingent on a lot of things."

McCown, who will be 39 next season, still hasn't committed to playing in 2018. That's the biggest variable. The Jets also have options, as they try to solve the puzzle of their perpetual quarterback quandary. They could acquire a veteran or draft a quarterback or both.

"Josh had a great year," Bowles said. "It would be great to have him back. It's business in this league. He has decisions to make, we have decisions to make. Hopefully, they can meet and we'll go from there."

McCown, who signed a one-year, $6 million contract last offseason, will hit free agency after a career year. In 13 starts, he set career highs for completions (267), yards (2,926) and touchdown passes (18). His 94.5 passer rating ranked 11th in the league. He broke his left (non-throwing) hand in the 14th game, and the offense essentially shut down for the remainder of the season.

In recent weeks, McCown talked about consulting with his family after the season on whether he should play another year. He wants to get into coaching, and he'd probably have immediate opportunities if he chose that path.

McCown hasn't talked to the media since his injury, and he wasn't made available on Monday. Bowles said he instituted a new rule this season that prohibits players on injured reserve from speaking to the media.

Well, at least he didn’t name McCown the starter. That’s first sign of actual improvement I’ve seen from him. So, we got that going for us.

Thought the same thing.

He's praising his 1 year-wonder, isolated personal career-year, journeyman QB for producing pedestrian NFL QB stats  AGAIN!?!?!

He had a real good year , but made too many "rookie" like mistakes for a seasoned vet.

For all intents and purposes, he way as well have. It shows me this HC has zero desire whatsoever to play a QB with limited experience. Bringing McCown back shouldn’t even be s talking point. Two 5-win seasons. The convo should be about getting better at every position possible, not how to bring back a 39 year old career backup as the starter.

I would think if the jets sign McCown early in FA (or even before FA) that would signal they are going to draft and develop a QB.   It would make no sense to sign McCown and another high priced vet QB.

I’d draft the best qb at 6, and also sign Cousins for 3-yr $60mil. Make sure we don’t go into another year with an improbable if-then scenario at QB

You'll know the Jets intentions with McCown as soon as the $$ amount of the coming 'new' deal is announced.  If they sign him/entice him to com back at more than he played at last year, their intent is to have him start.

No smart NFL team pays an intended back up QB/mentor for $$10 mill/yr.

Signing McCown again is going out if your way to ensure a low ceiling for the next season. Effectively meaning the only way we make the playoffs and can contend is if we draft a rookie phenom AND Bowles plays him AND he doesn’t get hurt and have McCown full in for him.

The Jets announced the signing of nine players to reserve/future contracts: G Ben Braden, OT Korren Kirven, WR Jalin Marshall, WR Tre McBride, DL Claude Pelon, DB Terrell Sinkfield, QB Joel Stave, WR Damore'ea Stringfellow and WR Daniel Williams.

Honestly the conversation should be we need to find a QB in the draft so we can start to build what we’re trying to build.

Unfortunatley I don’t think Bowles sees the QB as an important piece for his career.

In Jets terms Josh McCown was the second coming of Joe Montana

It is funny you say that, I was reading the full transcript of his press conference and the media is hounding him that he won't let McCown speak. And that is what I thought, he has finally learned that the media isn't his friend. What is good for them, isn't good for the team, so I like when they are mad.

On why Josh McCown could not speak with the media today…

We had a policy at the beginning of the year for ourselves that our IR guys will not talk to the media. He is on IR, he’s like everybody else.

On why players on injured reserve (IR) can’t talk since the season has concluded…

Our IR guys won’t (talk). That’s the rule we have. They don’t really need to talk to the media because they have nothing to say being on IR.

On McCown indicating that he would speak with media today…

Josh is on IR.

On Nick Mangold talking with the media last year despite being on IR…

I said it was a rule we put in this year, not last year. We put it in in the beginning of this year.

On McCown being the team MVP and why players on IR cannot talk with the media…

It’s a team decision that we decided on to help us run more smoothly. I decided that we had the rule at the beginning of the year. That’s what we’re going with. It’s not a made-up rule. It’s something we had. MVP or non-MVP, you go by the same rules.

On when McCown is off IR…

Later on.

On if the media can speak with McCown at some point…

You probably can.

On at what point the media can talk with McCown…

I’ll give you guys a date.

On if he wants McCown to return to the team…

Josh had a great year. It’d be great to have him back. It’s a business in this league. He has decisions to make. We have decisions to make. Hopefully, they can meet and we’ll go from there.
