Gas2No99
STATE OF THE JETS: Sorting out fact, fiction for Gang Green 1. The franchise quarterback is on the roster. We'll officially put a bow on this most unusual Jets season by clearing up a few fallacies and peeking into the future in our coveted Fact or Fiction segment. Buckle up, Jets fans. Here's the unvarnished truth about your beloved franchise's present and future. FICTION Don't be surprised if Gang Green undergoes a signal-caller housecleaning this offseason. Bryce Petty gained invaluable experience in his first three seasons, including three starts in December, but the organization will move on. Petty has the physical gifts, work ethic and drive to compete in this league. He needs to find the right system to accentuate his skillset. If Petty can hook on with a play caller with a vertical/attacking scheme, there might be a place for him in the NFL. He should be able compete for a backup job. Christian Hackenberg's future with the team that drafted him with the No. 51 pick in 2016 is bit more complicated. There's a faction on One Jets Drive that doesn't believe he should return next season. Real talk: Hackenberg has never taken short-cuts in his first two years. He wants to be great. He puts in the time to be great. There's a strong feeling in the building, however, that he'd be better off elsewhere. There's some wiggle room, because general manager Mike Maccagnan has control of the 53-man roster. Therefore, the personnel buck technically stops with him. That being said, Maccagnan will have important roster decisions to make this offseason that might ultimately prompt him to part ways with Hackenberg. Stay tuned. Don't be surprised if Gang Green undergoes a signal-caller housecleaning this offseason. (Jim Rogash/Getty Images) 2. Jamal Adams will make the Pro Bowl next season. FACT The rookie safety made an immediate impact, but he's only scratched the surface of his boundless potential. You can't teach the instincts that Adams has on the field. He'll have to improve his eye discipline in coverage, but there's no debate that the guy has the skills that pay the bills (like the kids used to say). Hot-take Twitter artists have already filed away his bold Pro Bowl prediction. He has one critical flaw, however, that must be addressed and fixed immediately or he'll be doomed to fail: He needs to put on a shirt in pre-game warmups in sub-zero temperature from now on. 3. Muhammad Wilkerson will be back with the Jets in 2018. The biggest question moving forward: Does Wilkerson actually love football? … The Jets don't think so. FICTION It's unfortunate that a skilled player with so much promise never really got it. Wilkerson's career with the Jets came to an unceremonious end Sunday. He was deactivated for a third consecutive game after displaying a repeated lack of commitment and professionalism. Bowles gave this guy more chances than we'll ever know, but enough was enough. Sooner or later, you either embrace the program or you get shown the door. Bowles was firm and fair with Wilkerson, who received a free $21 million from the organization thanks to his multi-year deal inked before the 2016 season. The Jets trusted him… and got burned. The biggest question moving forward: Does Wilkerson actually love football? … The Jets don't think so. 4. Leonard Williams is overrated. FICTION I've heard some mind-numbingly dumb things during the season, but this one takes the cake. Anyone who believes that Williams is overrated knows less about football than my 12-year-old niece, who doesn't like football. Sure, Williams' two sacks won't wow anybody, but he had solid pressure on the passer despite playing half the season with one wrist. In case you didn't know, it's hard to play tackle football with one wrist. Williams is a part of the core. Don't be surprised if the Jets try to give him a contract extension this offseason. 5. It was a smart decision for the Jets to give two-year contract extensions Todd Bowles and Mike Maccagnan. FACT Christopher and Woody Johnson should be commended for sticking with their plan after a thorough GM and head coach search three years ago. Stability and continuity at the two most important positions in the organization actually matter. I know, I know. A stunning revelation. Nobody's crowning Bowles and Maccagnan yet, but they've shown enough to continue this rebuilding process. The Jets don't want to become radioactive like the Browns. The Johnson brothers made a sound move. Now it's time for the general manager and head coach to nail free agency and the draft. 6. JOSH ROSEN WILL BE THE JETS STARTING QUARTERBACK IN 2018 Josh Rosen. (Mark J. Terrill/AP) ???? It doesn't look like the Jets, who pick sixth in the upcoming draft, will be in striking distance to get Rosen. (Truth be told: They'd prefer to land their starter in free agency or via trade). But, man, he would be a fun dude to cover. Fearless on and off the field. Super smart. I hope the football Gods grant me this one wish.
JohnnyLV
Two year extensiions are a complete fiction. They did nothing to deserve those. They got them from fear of being less than mediocre. Thats where the Johnsons set the bar-mediocre. They could care less about winning.
Greensleeves
Can you add Lunacy to the options? It would be sheer lunacy if the Jets did not draft a QB in the first round. They should try and get to at least #3 if possible. It's the only way to have sustained success in this league - drafting and developing your own QB. Otherwise it's a few years here, a few years there.

As a football/talent decision, it's a no brainer. And further hard to sell tickets to Kirk Cousins plus a corner. Granted probably ownership feels burned with the Sanchez pick, but it's a must. How do you keep picking defense first round when the defense sucks and offense is even worse.

How do you keep picking defense first round when the defense sucks and offense is even worse. We keep drafting defense in the first round and we're not even in the top 20 in defense, and that's with a defensive coach! Since 1994-96, we haven't had a new coach go three successive seasons without a playoff appearance. That's a long time! The NFL is an offensive league in the regular season. All of our focus needs to be on a QB and Oline. Address D with our cash as well as some of the offensive line. Have some guts and grab a face of the franchise, which we do not have. I was talking with a Green Bay fan a couple nights ago that lives in CT. He couldn't name one player on the Jets. How can management overlook this? Let's go back to the high flying offense we used to have with O'Brien, Toon, Walker, Freeman McNeil, Mickey Schuler and Johnny Hector. Can you believe those guys were on the same team? We don't have one person with that talent on offense today. They also had the Sack Exchange. The most fun team we've ever had IMO.

I have confidence that we'll trade up for one of the Big Two (Though I think we'd choose Sam over Josh). This team can't just settle for the 3rd or 4th QB available, this is supposed to be our year that we get a Franchise guy. Mac is a build through the Draft guy, who will be keen on moving up for the best available guy.
Lupz27
Wonder who he is talking about in the quote Jets would prefer to land their QB via trade? I’m pretty sure Fitzpatrick’s contest was for only 1 year in TB.
jeremy2020
who in the actual f*ck was so drunk that they thought the franchise QB was on the roster... NEWS FLASH! McCown isn't on the roster right now so of course the franchise QB isn't on the roster. Don't worry though, Mac and Bowles won't the franchise (aka McCown) get away from them. I smell a 12 million 1 year deal after Bowles declares him the starter in like a month.
LIJetsFan
So, nothing but pissing and moaning for the next few month.....great message board we've go going here.
Kleckineau
Williams most definitely is over rated. There 2-3rd round DTs of his caliber picked every year and even an occasional UDFA. His biggest play to date was saving Darron Lee's gf from a smackdown.

Blame the New York Jets for that not the fans that have had to put up with incompetence and awful moves for years. Once this team actually finds its ass with its hands things will be much nicer here. Don't blame the fans.

I have a few thoughts about Leonard Williams. - He is a tad overated. - He has had to put up with a total dog playing beside him for two years that is lazy and take plays off and gets blocked by jags thus he faces more attention. - He has a coach that has zero clue how to best use potential impact players. williams is a potential game wrecker and should be moved around the line to create mismatches which does not seem to happen.
