If he is franchised tagged again he might sit out the entire season.

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell is apparently prepared to play hardball with his current team as he seeks a new long-term contract this offseason.

According to ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler, Bell said Thursday he "would definitely consider" sitting out the 2018 season or retiring if the Steelers use the franchise tag on him for a second straight season.

Nice. Love to see a player stick up to cba and Goodell

Can we please get rid of the myth of the “long term” deal in the NFL this offseason? Any GM worth their salt is drawing up contracts with an out after 2-3 years under this current CBA and any player or agent with a brain is looking for as much money as they can get up front.

How is that sticking it to either? Goodell just got a contract extension.

If anything, he's the one losing the most - 14 million. Sure the Steelers will also lose out on production, but they can draft a young guy who could contribute (especially the way good RBs are coming out of college right now).

No such thing as long term deal in nfl.. baseball you are on the hook with a contract 100%. Football you are lucky enough to get 40% of contract guaranteed.

Well, no kidding. But Bell will want lots of guaranteed money.

Meaning that once he gets his money and begins dogging it, you are on the hook with dead mony to cut him

You are thinking like every player who makes bank is a scumbag like wilkerson or revis. No those are the rare A-holes in this league. Remember guys like Curtis Martin, got a big deal and still played his heart out for his team.  Bell is lot younger and plenty of ball left after this deal. If bell dogs it after signing this new deal, it will be his last decent deal. Why leave millions and millions on the table when you are FA again ? He isn’t a fat lazy lineman like Mo you gotta worry about

All I am saying is that I doubt his character and love for the game. That is just my opinion. As well, I am not a fan of spending free agent type dollars on a RB, as I consider that a position you can get by with younger and disposable talent.

I would rather put money in the line and make an average back, a very, very good back. O-lineman have longevity.

Yes Goodell did. But he helped install this franchise tag parameters no ? Or at least help it continue and progress. Owners love it to hold players from driving up their price in free agency. Last thing owners want to see is players not playing by rules Goodell is paid to make sure they do. Owners won’t like players holding out and protesting franchise tag. If it catches on and players unite to stand up against it, it will be Goodell’s last contract. I also wonder can they fire him and save $$? Or is the commish’s contract the only guaranteed in football ha

I don't see how you can pay a RB and QB, especially when many teams get by with a RB that does not cost alot.

If the Jets went with a QB that they drafted, maybe they can afford Bell.

But if the Steelers wanted to pay Bell a year 2 franchise tag, based on what other RBs make that may not be a bad deal for Bell.

Remember what an old man Denagelo Williams was doing in that system?

Bell is a great RB and I really like that he grew up a Jet fan but there's no way the Jets should throw big money at a RB who has several seasons of big mileage already on him.  I also wouldn't use a high draft pick on Saquon Barkley either.  RBs can be found later on.

?? He’s had one season in which he took more than 300 carries and just 3 with more than 250.

Agree 100%. Except when you have so many holes and your gm is picking safeties back to back, picking BPA early which is usually D, or wasting 2nd round picks on qb busts.. You will have to get rbs in FA. Plus every other team thinks that way too. That is why every single team in nfl has a better rb situation than the jets. They won’t be as desperate to go after bell.. You are right nobody should spend big bucks on rbs. But when nobody is, and the price drops on a player like bell it’s hard not to jump on him. Especially when you have smart gms who can pull a rookie rb in 2nd round Who immediately accumulates over 1500 total yards as a rookie ( saints ) there is less places for a guy like bell to land.

I'm fine with signing Cousins (I'd be pretty happy if we did, TBH), but I want no part of Bell. He's a great back, but his price tag is going to be way too high.

A good QB is worth the money. You can get good production from another RB for a lot less.

Get the QB, then spend money on linemen to protect him.

he'd be getting paid like a feature back when the jets are doing rb by committee. powell and forte between them were about 20 rushes per game.  bell is about 20.  it looks like he's a pretty good back but may not be a good fit for the jets.

Powell isn’t good. I’m into turning over all 3 RBs spots this year:

Bell in FA

Draft either Michel or Penny in the 2nd/3rd

Draft the opposite style of the RB drafted earlier in the Fif-7 range

i tend to agree on powell.  he's good but better to launch him before he falls off the age cliff and draft another one.  no love for mcguire?  he looked pretty good and caught some key passes.

McGuire’s probably the worst of the three right now.
