marrone and coughlin

decent article in the ny post about the relationship between coughlin and marrone down at jacksonville.  the quotes from the team's owner, khan, "“If you want to climb Mount Everest, you want to find someone who’s done that,’’ Khan said. “We needed a veteran presence, someone who’d been there and done that. Tom Coughlin was the perfect guy. He founded the team and had success here. He went to two Super Bowls and won them. Jaguars blood runs through his veins. He’s committed. He’s passionate." are pretty telling.  and even more telling is that the jets could have done the same thing although coughlin became available the year after mac/bowles was hired.  nevertheless, they still could've built a similar management structure for the team and it would probably help the team.

Jags resemble the type of Giant teams that beat NE before. This biggest difference would be the QB position but Bortles has done well in the playoffs.  His legs have carried drives and he hasn't made many mistakes.  If Fournette can move the chains then perhaps we are looking at a huge upset.

Eh. What other guys like Coughlin were available to do something like that here?

I think the fundamental problem with the Johnson ownership of the Jets is that they’re so far removed from the Kraft-Jones-Mara-Rooney inner circle of the league that not only couldn’t they lure a decent executive to run the team for them, they wouldn’t know where to find one.

Excellent, excellent point. This is it in a nutshell. As an owner for 18 years, you should have a list of people within the league that you have solid relationships with that could provide you with many great candidates for whatever you may need. I really believe the "power" people in the league view Woody and Co. as comic relief, and nothing close to a competitive threat.

What relationships did Khan have? Jets just have no successful history to fall back on like other teams do. Coughlin had a history with the Jags. That’s why he went back there.

Cant exactly bring Namath in. There’s no coaches or execs that got their start here and went on to have success that I can think of?

Belichick highly recommended Doug Marrone.  Leon Hess, for all his faults, had relationships within the league. The point is, Woody has had to resort to Korn Ferry and a guy like Casserly to find people.

That's what I want him to do. Which is why I want Macc to succeed so much. IMO Woody did this the right way. He went out and sought advice from people who know football

"Word is Woody will pay whatever it takes to get a guy to fix the Jets"- that's all it takes. Bowles and Maccagnan make a combined what? Im not even sure Maccagnan has an office.

Not really. He hired two guys who’d been out of the league for a combined 20+ years, then he didn’t listen to their recommendation because Manish told him not to.

It’s obvious Woody is the one that’s held this team back for so long. We need to get him to sell!! Need some blackmail to force the sale.

Well that second part is true. He's still an idiot.

But since it's likely he's not going anywhere, I look for any encouragement I can get.

What I fear is that if macc fails, he will go back to an Idzik type GM

What’s amusing is that not even Idzik would take the Jets GM job right now.

Yeah, I don’t think money will fix this. If it did, Jerry Jones would have all the rings. The guys (like Coughlin) don’t work for the money.

All we need to do now is to list the available super bowl winners with deep ties to the Jets that own a home in the area.

We all know that 77 year old guy that left us 17 years ago ain't walking through that door, right?

Besides, John idzik built the jags

Dont go to games. dont give the Jets your money

What’s that gonna do? Owner isn’t changing. And that’s the problem.

Who needs that when you got nepotism?

As the hatred continues on here, I just wonder why you hate the team you supposedly root for and not just give up and root for another team?

In other words, I am able to compartmentalize my hate and not let it affect the reality of the different elements of the organization.

Some Jets fans are unable to do that and basically go "Everything is bad. I hate the Jets."

This is what’s referred to as soft-pedaling hate speech.

We hate failure and troubleshoot the problem.

You love to hate fans. That's why you're here ... for your soapbox needs.

because it is stupid and completely unrealistic.  Besides, the vast majority of the team's revenue comes the NFL TV deal and not the stadium.

But the failure is not everywhere. It's the concept of holding two seperate beliefs in your mind.

The organization is bad but there are good thing in it.

And I dont love to hate fans. I like to argue certain things.

Re: Mehta influencing Johnson to kick Marrone to the curb

we still have no proof...  NONE, ZERO, NADA...  that this account is the way it actually went down.  Yet people are perpetuating the rumor like it is a fact.  It's not.  You know what?  (Not just you dbate, but anyone who is promoting this rumor), prove it or just stop already.

MIchael Kay has said that Woody went into the interview room with Marrone with a copy of the Daily News. Now that would be pretty damning if accurate
