Fallout From Anderson’s Antics Will Impact Long and Short-Term for Gang Green

As if the Jets didn’t have enough areas to address this off-season, it’s fair to assume that the recent arrest of wide receiver Robby Anderson will put the wide receiver position under the microscope just a bit more than it would have had Anderson not gotten himself in trouble with the law.

With plenty of holes to fill in the coming months, the general feeling among Jets fans and those who cover the team was the wide receiver was not a “pressing” need.  Anderson had come on strong this season and posted career highs in receptions, yards and touchdowns (63/941/7).

Also turning in a career year was fellow receiver Jermaine Kearse, who reached career highs in receptions and yards (65/810) and tied a career high with 5 touchdowns.  The combination of Anderson and Kearse gave the Jets a solid 1/2 punch.  Rookies Chad Hansen and Ardarius Stewart will be heading in to year two in 2018 and Quincy Enunwa will be attempting to come back from a serious neck injury.  It’s a group that’s far from elite, but good enough to allow the team to address bigger needs.  Anderson’s arrest complicates things however.

Don’t forget, Anderson was arrested at a music festival in Florida back in May and has yet to face any disciplinary action.  Two arrests for hostile interactions with law enforcement is likely to cost him some games in the immediate future, and could prevent the Jets from ever offering the talented pass catcher a second contract.

A possibly broken Enunwa and off-field issues for Anderson could mean the only receivers under contract for the 2019 will remain Stewart, Hansen and Charone Peake with no extensions for either Enunwa or Anderson likely in the near future.  Of course Kearse could be extended or re-signed, but that’s an unknown at this point.

While the Jets will wait and see how Anderson’s legal woes unfold, they may be forced to spend a bit more time than expected at the Senior Bowl and combine looking at a position that should suddenly be moving up on their list of priorities to address in the near future, hoping to solidify the position for the long-term.

The Jets need to realize that Anderson is likely to remain a persistent violator.  They would be negligent not to have a replacement in the queue.  But of course this is the Jets.  And Bowles philosophy about players who break rules is clearly "boys will be boyz".  F-ing Jets.

There isnt a single position on the entire team that couldnt be upgraded in the offseason. Not. A. Single. One.

Robbie Anderson coming on this season should never have prevented the Jets from trying to upgrade the WR position.

Robbie being a total moron and getting in trouble with the law again, is just a reminder that no position is covered in Jets land.

I wanted to double dip at edge in the first 3 rounds this year if we land Cousins but I think we should take a WR if we didn't address the position in FA.

They just drafted 2 WRs last year. If they really think the guys they draft with their 3rd/4th rounders are so unlikely to be starter-worthy, then trade up with those picks every year for a pick a round higher the following year instead of trading down further in the current draft to pick up additional low-percentage picks from even-lower rounds.

Presumably there'll be some more clarity on where Robby stands over the next month (still comfortably before FA starts on 3/12, which itself is over a month before the draft). Plus they know better than we do where Enunwa's progress is at, and where it's then likely to be.

Of course we all would rather have an AJ Green type on the roster, and I'm sure they - and every team without one - feel the same way. But if either one of Stewart/Hansen are expected to be useful in 2018, then I wouldn't panic over returning with a starting group consisting of one of Stewart/Hansen, Enunwa, Kearse, plus 1 more among: Robby, a new FA/draft WR, or a serious TE upgrade from FA/draft. Then there are also last-chance long shots for D.Smith, Peake, and if there are any lucky finds like Anderson again this year. That's enough of a group for a competent QB to be plenty productive, without giving Bowles an excuse to bury both Stewart & Hansen before their careers get underway.

Depends if our 2018 QB can see the field, or if he needs to force it in to a "#1" type because they're basically wide open anytime they're in single coverage.

That's 2 strikes which will probably land him some lost games in 2018. He needs to get his sh*t together fast. 3 strikes and he should be out. On another note I really liked Peake's college play and he seemed to disappear in 2017. He still has value in my opinion. Would be a good move to get a WR DP or FA with deep threat potential in case Anderson continues to punk out.

This is a non issue, I read here on JN that it was all the cops fault, and Robby was doing whats known as a defensive wife rape threat and defensive wife nut in the eye threat. He should be good to go week 1 and run some bad ass go routes on 3rd and long!

This is a pretty sobering thought.  FA or draft - we need to get some WR talent added to this roster.  Plus some talent at pretty much every other critical position.

They should’ve already cut Anderson.

I don’t care how talented or cheap he is right now, sometimes these moves need to be made to send a message and rid the locker room of another f*ckhead.

And it’s not like the Jets can’t land an immediate upgrade with over $100 million to spend and guys like Allen Robinson, Sammy Watkins, Jarvis Landry, etc all set to hit the market.

They should probably draft a receiver too dumb to get a driver's license

I think he got hurt early, no?

robbie being a knucklehead certainly doesn't do the team any favors but it's still far too early to think he won't be playing in 2018.  trading him and his cheap contract might be a good decision especially if they can get a 2 or a 3.  probably not given his off field behavior.  and it's still too early to rule enunwa out.  he had a plenty serious injury but there's no reason why he can't come back just as physically strong although he may have had a come to jesus moment.  kearse has proven to be a pretty valuable receiver so maybe they only need to look for one guy.

Unfortunately guys this behavior is not going to change. Robbie Anderson was a guy I was very high on from his first preseason with the Jets where  he totally lit it up. Problem is hes a punk and thinks hes entitled to act like a thug due to his rise in the ranks. Obviously hes wrong and If I were the Jets I would absolutely cut his ass and move on.

You can see by the way this guy acts in all walks of life that hes an Idiot and will continue to be and Idiot. He's the selfish player who puts himself above the team and that much was evident when He looked in the camera in the face of a losing effort by his team and asked to please vote him in the pro bowl. I despise players that are not about the team.

Through all the cheating and bullsh*t the best example of a team in this entire league are the New England Patriots as much as I hate them because they are our rivals you can't underestimate their players dedication to the organization and I bet if that comes into question internally the player is cut to move on no matter what he did on the field because disruption is way worse than having one player perform well.

Cut this guy now and move on so you at least know where you stand in FA and the uipcoming draft and you SEND A LOUD MESSAGE to other players who may wantr to play here especially rookies who could potentially ruin their career if cut on their first contract. Robbie Dumb ass Anderson probably just cost himself millions of dollars in future contract money and a few game checks to boot. Dumb is not what we need on this young team.
