Bruce Arians may not be coaching the Arizona Cardinals anymore, but that doesn’t mean he’s not still invested in the game he coached for 42 years.

In an interview with Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com at the Waste Management Open on Wednesday, Arians spoke glowingly about the group of college quarterbackseligible to be drafted in April.

"Oh, I think it’s outstanding,” Arians said. “Maybe the best in 15 or 20 years. The number of quality guys with height, stature, arms, statistics… I really wish I had the chance to meet each and every one and do all the evaluations but I think right now you could be sitting at 14 and get a quarterback. People are going to start trading up and everything but there’s enough quality guys to go around for everybody.

Arians’ former team needs a quarterback following the retirement of Carson Palmer after the season. They will certainly be one of the teams pouring time into evaluations of all of the quarterbacks available in the class.

Arians said there’s a lot of quarterbacks that have made an impression on him from this year’s crop.

“Talent-wise, I mean, Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, (Josh) Allen,” he said. “Baker (Mayfield) has that charisma. I love Lamar Jackson. I think he’s got an unbelievable skill set. Mason Rudolph beat my (Virginia Tech) Hokies with that deep ball and he may have the best deep ball of all of them. You could go on and on.”

Yeah, and he also said there was only 1 QB that he'd draft last year in the first round last year and he claimed he was ready to start on day 1 in the NFL

That player was: Deshone Kizer.

you know arians is the "Allen is the best QB" guy.... right? As soon as I saw the thread title I immediately thought about Kizer statement and how Arians probably has a "Josh Allen" poster that he stares at for hours at a time. lol.

I've said it before, I think Arians is wayyyy overrated.

I don't think it was Kizer. They passed on him twice.

Meanwhile, Arians later said he loved Watson and Mahomes, and that AZ would have taken either of them if they were available at 13. So it was probably 1 of them (most likely Watson).

And if Kizer has Arians and a healthy David Johnson he would have had a much better rookie season

"According to some radio guy"

For all we know, he could have been just speculating.

If it was Kizer, why did they pass on him twice?

I dont know, I'm just quoting Arians:

Coach Bruce Arians addressed the media at the NFL owners meetings and said he liked the talent at quarterback.

“So far, I would say one of the guys, and I’m not going to mention names, I think one of them is probably ready to start as a rookie,” he said. “All the rest, there are some really talented arms that need a year of learning how to play the position, especially at this level.”

It was confirmed he was talking about Kizer.

I'm aware of what Arians said, I'm not denying that part. I'm saying I don't believe it was about Kizer. Only person that said it was Kizer was a radio guy.

If he really felt that way about Kizer, he the Cardinals wouldn't have passed up on him twice.

Meanwhile, it's been confirmed that Arians loved Mahomes and Watson as well. With Mahomes, it was reported right before the draft.

Quote

5. The Cardinals like Mahomes. They pick 13th. They might love him. Beware, Cleveland. Arizona GM Steve Keim’s a bold guy. Emily Kaplan’s “24 Hours” piece with Mahomes illustrates why Mahomes is so well-liked in the NFL community.

And then Arians himself admitted he loved both those guys

Quote

Q: You’ve mentioned, too, that you and Steve (Keim) have had your eyes on guys in the draft only to have them taken just ahead of you. Anybody stand out?

A: Like last year, we loved Patrick Mahomes (of Texas Tech) and we loved Deshaun Watson (of Clemson). We thought we were going to get one of them, and all of a sudden, boop, somebody trades right in front of you. That’s the hardest thing in the draft: What are we going to give up to go up two spots? And he’s (probably) going fall to you anyways? That’s the beauty of the draft.

Right, so the moral to the story is....

Arians is full of sh*t...which is bascially all I was getting at.

In the article with Arians and Kizer, it did not say that Arians liked Kizer but just "I think one of them is probably ready to start as a rookie".  Being ready to start and a prospect's potential are two different things.  Maybe he did feel like Kizer was ready to start as a rookie but it doesn't mean that he had the highest ceiling as a prospect.  It also doesn't mean you draft him, especially when they had Palmer as the starter.  In fact, thinking that they had Palmer at least for one more year, I would have expected them to draft someone that wouldn't necessarily start right away but had a higher upside than Kizer.  They just didn't find one in that draft that they were comfortable taking with the picks they had.

I think Kizer has talent. Lets not pretend as if the Cleveland organization/coaching has not destroyed qb's.

I remember folks said Goff was that good a talent. He was drafted by Jeff Fischer and we all called him a bust. The coach was changed and now everyone loves Goff.

I wasnt a Kiser fan heading into the draft, but some of the Browns games i did see I saw a guy that in the right situation could start in this league and be successful.

Rookies tend to look like rookies, and sometimes coaches are to blame.

I honestly believe Kizer will develop into a solid QB. He played bad this year due to the fact he was a day 1 starter who was simply not ready for that role, and a horrific supporting cast. Give him a year or 2 of proper coaching, and he's a good player.

Agree.  I think it’s way too early for people to dismiss Kizer

I'd bet dollars to donuts that if Arians was Kizer's coach, he would have had a very good rookie season. Most young QB's can not overcome being in a bad situation. They need a HC and organization that is geared toward making them successful. They are not plug and play QBs. Archie Manning was in the judgment of many a more skilled QB than Terry Bradshaw (at the very least they were equals), but one got drafted into a good situation and the other did not. Bradshaw got 4 SB rings and a HOF bust while Manning was sacked 337 times during his 11 year stint with the Saints.
