Signing Cousins screams of selfishness and impatience

Sorry, but signing Cousins to me screams of the coach and GM being more worried about saving their jobs by going 9-7 or 10-6 rather than putting the franchise first, and the fans being impatient for not seeing this rebuild through. I think there is a lower ceiling with signing Cousins, but a quicker return to a mediocre to decent season. Drafting one of the top QBs (trade up) would give us the opportunity to build the team properly and continue putting the pieces in place. We are not a win now team. Yes, we can have a decent season, but I'm more concerned with sustained success and a Super Bowl win than being competitive for five years and busting our cap for a QB that will most likely be good, not great. If we do sign Cousins, we're suddenly a win now team before our pieces are in place. Makes no sense to me. Can't we have to guts to take a chance like the Eagles and Rams. Those teams look like they are going to be good for a long time. Cousins screams cop out to me. And yes, Bates I believe, can develop a young talented QB. It won't be Bowles developing him, FWIW.

The difference between signing Favre and this would be that Cousins is more of a long term solution than a quick fix, because of his age.

Very true, but he's still not the young guy that may give us a higher ceiling. I want our own guy to develop and bring along with our young team. If we had a win now team it would be different. We need to stay the course and build our team with really young players in the draft and free agency.

That's fair, but there will be growing pains. And I dont know if this market can handle growing pains

Favre had a way higher ceiling than Cousins, but he had a way lower basement. The man was an interception machine, and blew just as many big games as he won.

Does not make us a win now team. Nobody thinks that. Pretty sure Cousins doesn’t even think that.

But teams can turn things around rather quickly in a couple seasons. If he’s signed they have to kill fa and the draft the next two years. Otherwise not much will change.

But yeah I’d much rather draft our own guy.

The OP is correct. Even though id like to see cousins here, i know its not in the best interest of the franchise long term.

as i have said all along, best case scenario is sign cousins, draft a qb at 6 and cut petty and hack. Adress oline and or o weapons in round 2

thats just me

I will say this. MAcc's track record of bringing in QBs in FA is MUCH better than his track record of drafting QBs.

How so? Hack and whats his face? Are you serious

Well you have proven NFL QB vs a rookie that who knows will ever work out is the argument. I am glad my job is not on the line like Mac is to be right

Makes you wonder why the Broncos would go after Cousins in the first place....

Well because they are closer to contention than the Jets are. They still have weapons on offense and a QB makes that team a playoff contender. You can't say the same for the Jets.

This thread is wrong.

If youre marrying Cousins, youre doing it to long term stability at qb (4+ years).

During that time frame, the following can be our minimum product on offense for the next several years.

In other words, this is an idea of the offensive roster we can have. Most importantly ive only used our 2nd and 3rd round picks. And ive only spend 35ish ok Kirk plus another 20 or so to sign Richburg, extend Kearse and ASJ. As we all know, the Jets would have another 50 mil aftet these moves.

Beachum. Wynn(2nd). Richburg (FA). Winters. Shell.

Cousins.

Sony Michel (2nd)

Anderson.* Simmie Cobbs jr (3rd). Kearse (extend). Hansen.

ASJ (fa).

====

*Anderson is a ?  At this point moving forward

Sorry, but I think that's a terrible idea and one the team will never pursue. If (when?) the Jets sign Cousins, they have to be all in with Cousins, and that means not using their big chip in the draft to draft his backup. I could, however, see them spending one of their second rounders on one of the leftover QBs. Maybe.

The thought is can one of the drafting qbs be better then cousins.

The Jets are going to have to use ether draft capital or cap space to get a QB.  One or the other is going to be used but also one is going to be left because we have both.

Without seeing scouting reports my choice would be to draft which of the four falls to 6.  Resign McCown and start him till the rookie is ready.  After the bye week if it’s early.

I agree with this 100%.

We have an extremely potent QB guy in Bates, he could solve our issue of QB development. It's time this team grabs a Franchise guy, their own guy. We don't need another 5 year veteran win now tenure, we need a guy who will lead us for over a decade, and build our own team.

right.  basically both bowles and mac have a two season mandate to make the playoffs.  this season may very well be an 8-8 one but 2019 had better be 10-6 minimum.  cousins is a safer path to getting there because he's way more of a proven commodity than any qb coming out this season.  and if he's signed for 5 seasons then the jets will have some latitude to select a qb in later rounds who can be developed.  they will have 5 chances to catch lightning in a bottle.  it's not such a bad idea from that standpoint.

i do think drafting a guy is the best way to go but there can also be lots of heartache if the wrong guy comes on board.

here's the thing though.  supposing the jets do go the draft route and grab a top qb prospect.  year one will basically be a wash.  year two might be playoffs.  year 3 better be playoffs and so on.  but after the rookie contract runs out this draft choice will want market rate for his services.  as we have seen, a lot of teams spend a ton to keep their qb's so it's not like a draft pick isn't eventually going to cost a boatload if he turns out to be a top qb.  and i might add marino was the doltfin qb for his whole tenure and he got to the superbowl exactly once.

The cool thing is we can have Cousins for the next several years and still keep looking for his shccessor in a few years.

(See Mahomes, Rodgers as examples of guys drafted even though the team already had its starter on the roster)

I too want (in my preference) to draft an "our guy" QB who plays his whole career with us.

We're not in position to do so without great cost in draft picks.

Whoever is responsible for ruining the tank should be unemployed right now.

With that said, there are 4 or 5 rookie QBs I'd be happy with at #6.  Some more than others sure.  But all exciting to root for with 100 mil in upgrades around them.

No I get that. But do they think Cousins is any good?
