Long Range Shooting

Anyone here into shooting? If so what are you shooting and at what distance.

My newest addition

Savage 10 FPC HS Precision 308/6.5 CM, both barrels. I’m putting a leupold vx2 6-18x40. The guy a bought it from had a 8-32x56 sightron on it but I prefer leupold. I’m setting it up for 500 yards with the hope of going out to 1000.

For 400 yards (distance of the range) and under I have a Remington 700, 22-250 (for smaller game) unfortunately it’s has a 1:14” twist and a savage hog 11, 338 winmag (for larger game). Both have leupold vx2 4-12x40.

Im hoping to get a Nosler 26/28 by the end of this year.

@NIGHT STALKER welcome back.

Hand guns only.   I live in NC, have a conceal carry and own 2 9 MMS, and a 380 small pocket gun.

Did you the the shooter on Netflix, well done, right up your alley.???

No but I’ll check it out.

I have a couple of different handguns.

Ruger 380 - daily carry

SW 9mm

SW 40 cal

Springfield 45 - Hunting sidearm and target

Taurus 454 casull - Hunting wild pigs

The guys we shoot with do 3 gun competitions so there’s a pistol area. I’m guessing NC gun laws are similar to Florida.

Probably... I know we have reciprocity in conceal. You in Florida?

Sure a gun thread not all of us live in NYC or near it.

I’ve never shot an 8 mm it must kick like a sob. My 338 winmag is a beast.

My 30-30 is iron sights but I only use it for hunting in the swamp at less then 50 yards.

You have a Springfield xd/xdm? That’s my favorite pistol. Too big for daily carry but I shoot it more then all my other handguns combined.

400 yards scoped with a bipod isn’t as bad as you’d think. We don’t shoot it off hand.

What do you hunt in the swamp? Deer or hog.?

Id like to shoot sime hogs. No need to field dress just get rid of them

Mostly hogs but deer during the season. There’s no season for hogs or rules for that matter. They’re an invasive species and do a sh*t ton of damage so they want them killed. I always take all the meat. I’d post a picture of the amount of meat we took home last hunt but I’m guessing a posters on a NE based football site might get offended.

Post please. These gaylords who oppose hunting but wear leather jackets and eat burgers shouldnt be considered lol

Here’s two does that were about 60 yards from me for about 30 minutes. I was hoping a buck would be following them but two days in a row and nothing but the does.

  • 2 weeks later...

Only did smooth barrel shotgun shooting with open sights at an indoor range prior to NYS deer season. Usually from 30-75 yds out. Those are my normal opportunities range during the season. I replaced the Remington 1100 stock iron sights with some fiber optic ones. What a difference ! Much easier to pick up especially in low light conditions. Wish I had done it 10 years ago.

Hoping to do some real long distance shooting with my friends Barrett this spring and summer.

You’re hitting deer at 75 yards with a smooth barrel and iron sights? Holy sh*t, that’s better then what I’d do. I never go past 50 with iron sights and a smooth barrel. Fiber obtics are great, I’m trying to get them for my 30-30. The marlin 336 sights are god awful. I miss Hunting in the NYS and LI.

I’m guessing you’re talking about a 50 cal.

I didn't realize you had left NYS old friend. I envy you. My 1100 has always been a tack driver. It's me that has fallen off. Couldn't pick up that front bead and get er aligned fast enough. Was in a 8 year slump/funk . The fiber optics cured that and really got my confidence back.  Being over 65 is a beatch. Plus loosing the sight in my right eye and having to learn to shoot left handed didn't help. Luckily the left eye is 20/22 and it was my dominant eye and what I always used for archery.

My buds Barrett is in .338 Lapua . "Reach out and touch someone" as he says. Not sure what model it is but I know it's not the 99. I fell in love with the 99 at a NRA Convention in steel town a few years back. Too many benjamins for me to justify.

Still going from Buffalo to the Northern Cats each year but that mountain I climb gets steeper every year. Looking to get a milder rifle to use. Something like a Savage in .243 Win. A lot tamer on this old body than an 06.

I had the same thing happen, I’ve been shooting lefthanded with bows and long guns. I still shoot pistols righty. I have a 338 winmag but it’s nothing compared to the Lapua.

Don’t envy me the only good hunting in Florida is hogs, deer sucks.

Go with a savage 308 with a muzzle break. Great round for big game and targets with a ton of great ammo. You can also change out the barrel to a 6.5 creedmore if you want a little better ballistics.

At least in Florida you don't pay the taxes we do. Remember ? lol

Thanks for the advice on the .308 . I know there are a ton of different weight rounds to choose from in .308. I'll look into it.

All the best Mick.
