Matt Miller's Pre-Draft Rumors

Coming out of Super Bowl week, one rumor I've heard from so many places is that the top four picks in this draft are for sale. The Cleveland Browns wouldn't trade both the first and fourth picks, but they will take calls on moving one of them. The New York Giants (No. 2 pick) and the Indianapolis Colts (No. 3 pick) will also consider trading down.

Regarding the Browns and the first overall pick in the draft, I was told by multiple sources and confirmed with others that general manager John Dorsey would have aggressively shopped the selection if he had pulled off a trade for quarterback Alex Smith.

• Free agents Kirk Cousins and Case Keenum will have a major impact on the top six picks in the draft. If Cousins signs with the Denver Broncos or New York Jets, they wouldn't be likely to draft a quarterback early. But what if Keenum signs with the Broncos—would they still draft a quarterback at No. 5 overall? In talking to a Broncos front office member this week, I learned the team likes Keenum, and signing him would allow Denver to go elsewhere in Round 1.

• Baltimore Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome announced he will step down after the 2018 season. This move allows longtime second-in-command Eric DeCosta to assume the general manager job. DeCosta has been near the top of every candidate list I've made for open GM jobs in the last seven years. The Ravens are in good hands with him sticking around to run the team. The biggest difference we might see is fewer Alabama players drafted to Baltimore once Newsome, the former Crimson Tide tight end, is retired.

• How good is Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson? Said one director of player personnel to me this week: "If you want to call him the best player in this class, no one can argue with you, and there's no way he'll bust. As safe as they come."

Also hearing the Broncos really want to trade up to #1 and grab Rosen if they don’t get Kirk Cousins. Which if they don’t get him that means we most likely did .. so not much concern there.

it does good to know we’ll be in the front running for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th pick though. This offseason just keeps getting more and more wild.

Where you hearing that? I've ready the Broncos want to do just about every option so I have no idea what to believe. But hey it keeps things moving in this down time.

Have been reading Bronco forums to see what their PR has been saying since about last month. Elway apparently thinks Rosen has the purest stroke in the draft and wants him like there is no tomorrow if he can’t get Cousins. I assume trading to #1 would have to be the move.

Lord in all these, machinations please let Darnold fall in our laps or allow us to trade up for him.

I have a feeling that somehow the jets will at least get a shot at Rosen or Darnold, do they have the balls to go for it though.

If they've signed Cousins, they won't.

I think Keenum will be a hotter commodity then some think. Especially for veteran teams like the Broncos and Cardinals.

There's a lot of different options to go with which also makes me think teams won't go all out for Cousins. They'll ask to see what he wants and then if it's out of their budget I don't think they'll go nuts trying to fit him in.

Keenum for teams like that might be okay, keenum on a team like the jets would be a total disaster.

Of course every pick 1-4 is available - for the right price. Every pick in the draft is available if someone's willing to pay for it.

If Alex Smith would've had the Browns looking at other positions than QB, it'll be interesting to see how active they will be in the Cousins sweepstakes, who's the younger and -I think- better QB.

As for the Broncos, if the Jets find their QB in free agency I hope QBs go 1-5. A little surprised that the Broncos might prefer Keenum to one or three of the QBs expected to go high in this year's draft. I hope the Jets don't feel that way.

Nelson being the "safest" player in the draft concerns me. That's pure Maccagnan right there. Do not want a guard at #6. I'm hoping they're aggressive in free agency at OL, and then the BAP philosophy lands them a solid player in rounds 2-4.

Agreed. No need for Keenum on the Jets. I'm also starting to lean against Cousins. Go get your damn QB in the draft, should be no reason they can't pull off a trade.

Im back leaning against Cousins too now! I keep flip flopping ..but this time I have a good reason. That Jimmy G contract was absolutely ridiculous and Cousins has every reason to ask for more considering his numbers the past 3 years compared to Jimmy’s 5 game sample...add that to the fact the top 4 is open for business...jus go get your guy...

Which means we will end up with him by outbidding ourselves to a huge contract.

Todd Mcshay just posted a pretty outstanding play by Nelson. I can't post at work, so hopefully someone else can do it otherwise you need to click the link below.

I remember when Chance Warmack was the best Guard prospect since Hutch and was a cant miss, wont bust, cleanest prospect ever.

Yup him and Cooper were supposed to be can't miss. Then again, I also remember when the Cowboys took Zack Martin at 16 and now he is a 4 time pro bowler and helps anchor one of the best Olines in all of football. I am not advocating for taking him at 6, but he looks pretty awesome.

I don't think that's going to be an issue, at all. And you know how much of a cynic i am. If there's a window to move up, they'll take it.

So, why did you settle on Darnold over Rosen?

He does...but I'm not taking a Guard at #6 overall.  Even 16 seems high but obviously Martin is good ROI.  What did DeCastro go?  Like mid 20's right?

Rosen has more has character questions and injury questions.  I just like what Darnold brings to the table a bit more.  I have them rated very close and would be happy with either.  I have each of them well ahead of the 2nd tier QBs in my evaluation.

If can't trade up for either of these guys we do not trade up for a QB at all.

Yeah, no matter  how good Nelson is, you can't take him at 6. I think most Guards are a product of how good their C/Tackles are. Since we are severly lacking in those areas, I just don't see how we take him. But he's an intriguing prospect if we sign a Cousins a Tackle and opt to trade down to the middle of the first.

Hopefully we do get one of these 2. The bolded statement is true for me as well, although I lean Rosen. Either way the JETS need 1 of these guys.

Man the Broncos are floating out so many things. They love Mayfield.... no no, they love Darnold, nope they really love Rosen.

2 things... Rosen does have the purest stroke in the draft and You can't trust anything you read right now as we all know.

I agree .. here’s the thing though. If they don’t get Cousins..I still think they cut off an arm and leg to try for Rosen. Elway is a HOF QB and he probably knows a good passer when he sees one.(aside from the Lynch reach) if we all can see Rosen is the best passer in the draft then that means Elway must be drooling. I know he likes Mayfield a lot too. Just a hunch back by what I have read though.
