yep that's something the jets should consider with cousins.  they're going to need cap space after next season to start locking up some of their own free agents like leo or jenkins or adams or maye.

If we sign Cousins you can expect a similar contract structure.  Also we'll probably only
sign 1 or 2 other free agents (C & CB) to conserve our cap space going forward.  Then in the
draft I can see Maccagnan trading down at least twice in the first 3 rounds to accumulate
more picks.  Then we could bring in 9-10 picks on rookie contracts for the next 4 years
as the big $$$ comes off Cousins contract

This guy did not lockup starting players that are free agents next season - like ASJ, Claiborne, Ealy, Davis, Bass, Johnson, etc. If he starts talking about extending Adams who is signed through 2021 I will ******* choke him.

I have not been a fan of the Jets recent trade-downs in the draft.  If we're trading down like we did to pass on Pat Elflein to get Stewart and a fifth rounder which eventually turned into Dylan Donohue, no thanks.  We're not exactly super sharp about finding value.  I'd rather pick high and have a better shot of getting someone who will improve the starting roster rather than lots of cheap camp bodies.

Very smart indeed.

Jimmy Garoppolo signed a 5 year, $137.5 million contract with the 49ers on February 8, 2019. All contract details come via a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter and please credit accordingly. Garoppolo received a $7 million signing bonus and $28 million roster bonus as part of his first year salary. His 2018 and $7.5 million of his 2019 salary are fully guaranteed bringing the full guarantee to $48.7 million. $74.1 million of the contract is guaranteed for injury. There are annual per game roster bonuses of $800,000.

After the first year, his cap number will seem reasonable considering the handful of quarterbacks expected to get extended possibly this off-season or next (Rodgers, Ryan, Wilson, Mariota, Winston, etc).  Also with the growing league cap space by an approximate $12M per year.

When comparing this to Stafford's contract last year, they are similar in total amount and years (not in guaranteed money though).  Also, looks like in both contracts, the team can get out after 3 years.  But the way the contracts are structured are very different, cap number-wise.   Stafford's contract escalates and tops out at $31.5M in 2020.  Garoppolo's contract is front loaded and starts at $37M, but drops and slowly escalates to $27M in 2020.  The contracts were structured to be beneficial for their respective teams.  The Lions are expecting an increasing cap number and that they can manage their spending in future years, since at the time of the signing they didn't have the cap space.  The 49ers front loaded the contract since they have the space now.  If the guaranteed monies were somewhat equal, I wonder which type of contract Cousins would prefer?  It seems like a few teams, including the Jets, could offer a Garoppolo type of contract, while others may only be able to offer a Stafford type of contract.

I cant wait until Cousins signs somewhere else. The Jets signing him makes no sense on any level, and there are at least 3 better landing spots for him than the Jets. If somehow "brain trust" we have gets him here, it will fail in the most spectacular way.

You mean Free Safety don't mean free?

imo this is also an example of how the jets can afford cousins.  assuming a similar dollar and guarantee amount, there is tolerable cap hit after year 2 so he wouldn't be locked in for the whole 5 seasons.  granted, the qb would be getting an godly amount of money in year one but then it ends.
