Namath hung out with the fringe of society for sure, but I don't think he ever threw a game or anything.

the FBI had a file on him and tapped the phones at bachelor's III I believe, but never got any dirt on him.

Rumors flew after Earl moral missed the wide open flea flicker and threw like 4 picks that he threw SB 3

Many NFL teams have roots in crime, even the maras

I think Joe mostly showed up still drunk when he blew games

Not the most inspiring story but sure beats throwing games for the mob

I wonder about the "never got any dirt".  Forcing him to sell the bar or retire could possibly be "we've got dirt on you that we don't want to expose because it'll destroy the league if we reveal it.  You're selling this bar or you're done."

kriegel wrote that hoover hated Namath and wanted to get him. I expect hoover would have done more with dirt than make him sell the bar

He tried to throw the 1968 AFL Championship Game by going on an all-night bender the night before and crawling out of bed with a call girl at 7AM on gameday (source Kridel book).

Not to mention the entire seasons he threw away by water skiing a week before training camp (blew both hamstrings while recovering from knee surgery) and making an ill advised tackle after he threw an interception in a preseason game (blew his knee while recovering from wrist surgery).

The guy was entertaining but actually an idiot.  Can you imagine what Jets fans of today would say if our franchise QB got injured this way?  Water skiing after a season-ending knee surgery the year before on the eve of training camp with knees already ripped to shreds in college?  And then making a meaningless tackle in a meaningless preseason game to blow his knee again after missing the end of the prior year due to wrist surgery?  Good lord, he'd be vilified on Twitter.

Namath did some remarkably dumb things. Physically would like to think had he been born 20 or 30 years later or born into an structured intact family , he gets sober, smart and takes care of himself. But then again may  he isn't Joe Namath . We'll never know. Doesn't excuse any of it, but clear he was a stone alcoholic. Was a very different time. And he wasn't alone.

Wow, that’s terrible. Also, ps, Roger Goodell lives in a constant state of terror regarding his product losing the implicit endorsement of the international cartels that govern the gambling industry, and would be fed to Steve Wynn’s sharks if Roger ever let a WaPo reporter get an infinitesimal whiff of the extent of the ongoing Patriots cover-up.

Not to mention all of the games he tossed away by insisting on calling passing plays when the Jets could have easily won relying on the running game and D. He once through 5 interceptions AFTER the Jets had a 21 point lead. That game ended in a tie with Houston and cost the Jets the Division title and playoff spot.

If you didn't see Namath play, you have no idea how talented he really was. He was drafted to play baseball out of High School, could dunk a basketball, and Bear Bryant called him the greatest athlete he had ever coached. Oh yeah, and he could knock a dingleberry of a fly's butt from 40 yards away. Unfortunately, he had a huge ego and two cent head when it came to doing what was needed to win a football game. The 69 SB was the only game he ever played where he put winning ahead of his desire to air it out. If he called every game like the SB, the Jets may have won 3 SB's.

I read that Hoover never forgave Joe for saying the FBI director did not have the legs for high heels or pumps.  One of the reasons historians believe Hoover wore flats or saddle shoes during his cross dressing forays.

He was also jealous of Joe getting the pantyhose commercial..

Great post. Never knew that, especially the 5 interceptions after a 21 point lead. Crazy stuff.

Just imagine if we had Instagram during the Chester A. Arthur administration. Now that would have been chaos.

Interesting.  I never did see him play.  Was there talk of him throwing games away?  Or was he just the "million dollar arm with a ten cent head" kind of guy?

If you ever look at their Super Bowl run, he was the definition of a game manager.  He had a great drive to beat Oakland, but the 2nd half of that season and the SB, safe passes, very few interceptions, very few TD passes.   Use that power running game and great D.

your namesake is responsible for that. At Alabama he would call 6 passes in a game if the run game was working

Werblin wanted a star like the talent he managed in Hollywood

He told Joe to keep throwing it

Yes, that I knew.  I just didn't know that his selfishness cost us a playoff berth in '66 or '67 it seems.

https://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/197209240clt.htm  Too young to recall Super Bowl III. Here is the very first game I can really remember; Namath was 29, and Unitas 39. Probably both were done. But in this game they both got one last chance to shine. Not getting treacly Mitch Albom/Mike Lupica syrupy treacle nonsense here, you got to remember sometimes while there's so much bad and sucky about being a fan, you still get days when you see some all time greats doing things you will remember until you are an old f___er . And why you keep going back in hopes of seeing a game like this.
