The biggest competitor outside the Jets for Cousins is.....

Minnesota.

I think Denver got priced out by the Garoppolo deal. They would either have to move some players away, taking away some of what makes them attractive in the first place, or as @slats has illustrated, give up a ton of guaranteed money, which is dangerous to do. With Garappolo's deal artificially raising the bar for Cousins, I think Denver stays out of it.

Cleveland has the money to pull it off, but I don't think they have the cache. They have won 1 game in 2 years, even though some people here have said that they have more talent than the Jets. They have just hired Todd Haley, who is known to be a bit confrontational with his QBs. And they have 2 of the top 4 picks in the draft. If the do indeed have more talent than the Jets, why would they not use either of the picks to get a QB, if other spots are filled?

Minnesota is the middle of the the two prior situations. They have the cap room to do it and they have the recent cache. Does DiFillipo like any the QBs that he has now or would he like Cousins. That's the question.

No actually. I know other did, but I dont think you did

Then let me help: the Browns went 0-16. They don't have more talent than anyone. But I fear you're conflating that idea with the idea that the Browns have more assets than us, which is a very different point.

Per Football Outsiders 2017:

Jets OL Run Blocking Rank: 29th out of 32

Jets OL Pass Protect Rank: 27th out of 32

RB: Powell was 21st in league rushing and Ranks 43rd out of 47

TE: ASJ (if resigned) 51st out of 51

WR: Kearse ranks 29th and Anderson 37th

Show me the wins vs. narrative stats and then come talk to me.

this is what happens when you don't get any contributions on offense from your first or second round picks for a decade.

The Vikings would obviously be a more attractive destination if they make him a big offer. Regardless of what he says I don't see Cousins taking significantly less money to go to a winner though... Really what it comes down to is whether the Vikings (who were a game from the Super Bowl with Case Keenum) think he'd be a smart investment for them... Although the departure of Shurmur could complicate things.

If I'm going to play the lets get into Kirk Cousins brain and pretend like we know what he's thinking game and all these potential suitors somehow make it work to come competitively close from an offer standpoinit, I'd say he's stack ranking things this way:

Jax - SB next 3 years - best owner in the game, great leadership/FO (Coughlin), absolutely loaded roster, amazing city w/no state income tax, 2 hours from Dad

Minn - SB next 3 years - loader roster, cool stadium, cool city, good Head Coach

Den - SB next 3 years - historic franchise, loaded D, great WR's, amazing city, legal weed,

NYJ - $$$

Clev - $$$

Vikings got to championship game with Keenum-I would be leery of signing Keenum though as I doubt you will get anywhere near that level of success from him chalking last year as just right alignment for him.

plus he played in a dome, we saw what happened when he went to phily.

Cousins is not coming to NY. Oh sure, he’ll spend two days visiting here so he can drive up his asking price, but it’s going to come down to Minnesota/Jacksonville/Denver. We’ll get the QB scraps from the fallout of his signing

Let's hope.

That's been my thought process in all this too.

i'm curious to see how the cousins saga ends, but also, i'm curious to see what other qbs the jets pursue in FA.

Compared to the scraps the Jets have had in the past, these scraps are like a fresh kill on the side of the road instead of the old rotting carcasses they've been feeding on since 2011.

Cousins goes to Minny or Denver.

Jets can Sign Keenum, Bridgewater or Bradford (all 3 better than what we have), trade for McCarron? Trade for Foles? Draft Jackson or Mayfield or Allen or maybe draft Rudolph, White or Lauletta in the 2nd round.

2018 is like a f*cking smorgasbord of Quarterback choices compared to usual. It's all good, lol.

Vikings have the cap space to pay Cousins, the problem is they have a bunch of players that are at the end of their deals.

Diggs, Bars, Kendricks, Hunter, and Waynes all gotta get paid.

Won't be able to keep those guys if they use up their cap on Cousins

The Vikings draft well.  Teams that draft well and have confidence in their scouting dept let big whale free agents go and simply reload.  Teams like the Jets give free agent defensive tackles like Muhammad Wilkerson $100 million

The Vikings almost have to sign Cousins.  Bridgewater and Bradford are both done. Keenum is another Ryan Fitzpatrick

MIN and JAX are light years ahead of any other potential suitors, and that includes Denver.  The only question is whether either of those teams can afford to, or are willing to, spend the amount it will take to get him.  JAX doesn't exactly have that kind of money to spend, especially with plenty of guys being ready for their own big contracts soon enough.  MIN would have to be willing to take the risk of letting 3 QBs walk out on them as they make a bid for Cousins, short of them being able to get away with screwing Bridgewater out of FA.

Denver might be able to sell themselves a bit better given their history, but they're currently trending in the wrong direction and pale in comparison to those other two, so I don't buy this idea of them being in some great negotiating position unless they can sweeten the pot.

The trouble with this line of thinking is that the Jets could have signed Keenum this past offseason.  They also could have signed Glennon, Romo, Kapernick or Cutler.  They could have traded for Cousins, Garappolo, Brissett, McCarron, Foles or Osweiler (could have gotten a 2nd for taking him!).  They could have drafted Mahomes or Watson.  Instead, they paid a 38 year old man $9M for 5 wins.

Foundation!

Just think, they only have to replace 3 starters being lost to free agency.  Probably 5 or 6 after the cap casualties.
