Just something to look at while we ponder free agency versus the draft for our next qb.  Here are the first round QBs since 2005:

2005  #1 Alex Smith, #24 Aaron Rodgers, #25 Jason Campbell

2006. #3 Vince Young, #10 Matt Leinart, #11 Jay Cutler

2007  #1 JaMarcus Russell, #22 Brady Quinn

2008  #3 Matt Ryan, #18 Joe Flacco

2009. #1 Matthew Stafford, #5 Mark Sanchez, #17 Josh Freeman

2010  #1 Sam Bradford, #25 Tim Tebow

2011  #1 Cam Newton, #8 Jake Locker, #10 Blaine Gabbert, #12 Christian Ponder

2012  #1 Andrew Luck, #2 Robert Griffin, #8 Ryan Tannehill, #22 Brandon Weeden

2013  #16 EJ Manuel

2014  #3 Blake Bortles, #22 Johnny Manziel

2015  #1 Jameis Winston, #2 Marcus Mariota

2016  #1 Jared Goff, #2 Carson Wentz, #26 Paxton Lynch

2017  #2 Mitchell Trubisky, #10 Patrick Mahomes, #12 Deshaun Watson

As you can see there were a lot of good QBs taken in the first round as well as a good number of duds.  Interestingly I think the only two of that group that have won a super bowl are Rodgers and Flacco.

And only 4 have made the Super Bowl.

However, the list who's made the playoffs is much larger - Goff, Wentz, Mariota, Bortles, Tannehill, Luck, Griffin, Sanchez, Stafford, Smith, Young, Cutler, Tebow and you got to be in it, to win it.

I was just looking at this list and seeing that not a single #1 overall QB has won a Super Bowl during this time frame other than the Mannings.  Before that, Aikman was the last to do it.  That's kind of crazy.  And then in history, Namath, Bradshaw, Plunkett and Elway.  Wow

You just saved me a lot of typing here. I was going to say essentially the same thing..other than the historical ending. but it is a bit surprising.

I still say draft Rosen or Darnold...

Despite the lack of SB winning QB's taken in the first round, it's still the best route to acquiring one.

Plus, you also have to include the Brady/Manning/Big Ben factor. Only once since 2005 has another QB represented the AFC, Flacco.

The NFL has been much different.  The only QB's to represent the NFC twice are Russell Wilson and Eli Manning.

The tide is turning though.  Brady cant do this forever, the shine is off the Steelers and the Mannings are done.

I agree.. WE have been waiting for a QB for too long.

Two problems with your scenario; 1.  Without a trade up Rosen and Darnold probably won’t be there.  2. Free agency happens way before the draft so you don’t know who will be available.

Brady is always there in the SB, kind of titls this whole thing off balance.

Also, in 2004 there were eli and ben drafted, who both have won superbowls.

I actually wasn’t trying to make a point about the Super Bowl but as I was typing the names I noticed the lack of winners.  My main point is that there is approximately a 1 to 1 ratio between good first round QBs to average/poor.

44 drafted i think only 19 are still playing.  so even with the first round qb the odds of getting one are 50-50.

There are no problems with my scenario, I didn't really give one.

It is pretty obvious if Rosen or Darnold is the target you will have to grow a pair and trade up (Mac not you).

Yes, free agency happens first, so obviously that would impact the draft. BUT - If you were going to ask me I would sign 3-4 positions of need with the (projected) 30 mil for cousins and target the young QB. It would seem this route would have much better long term success and sustainability rather than giving COUSINS, who If the price was correct and Washington hadn't blown up his $$$, so much money. Cousins to me is more of a system QB not a QB that is on the elite level to carry a team week in and out. 30 mil is just too much for him IMO.
