Different Offseason Plan

CURRENT CAP SPACE: ~84M

CUTS:

DE Wilkerson (saves 17M). This is over.

RB Forte (saves 3M). This is over.

OG Carpenter (saves 5M). This is debatable move that I am on the fence about. It'll happen after my draft.

CB: Skrine (saves 6M). Skrine holds too much. You can't win with someone being so consistently penalized.

CAP SPACE = ~115M

RE-SIGN:

ILB Davis (8M cap hit). This year he was the leader of the defense as far as I'm concerned. Though I think of him as a 35 year old, he's only a young 29 right now. We give him a one year deal at a decent rate to see if he can keep it up before locking him up.

WR Enunwa (3M cap hit) I am tempted not to sign him back. But he really was a beast in 2016 and is working hard at a comeback. Him being in the running for Walter Payton award plays a role in my decision. I like his character and the work ethic, since his 2014ish domestic incident. I remember his potential and youth and give him the benefit of the doubt after a good physical. I'm hopeful, but suspicious of his ability to produce, so I go forward in FA and draft as though he doesn't exist. I can afford to do so since 3M is not killing my cap.

TE Seferian-Jenkins (5M cap hit). This guy is not going to be a top player in the league but i respect 50 catches. He is on the way up and should put together a few good years. Decent security blanket as a TE. He's cheaper than the alternatives. He gets a 3 year deal averaging 5M.

WR Kearse (additional 1M cap hit). Good players should be re-signed before they expire, and Kearse's contract expires in 2019. Robby will hopefully be producing for us in 2019 despite a couple games lost to suspension, but Robby's contract will also be up in 2019, and Robby will be most likely moving on. I need a WR signed past 2019. Kearse gets 2 additional years for 7M per year.

CAP SPACE = 98M

TRADE:

ILB Bobby Wagner (10M cap hit). In return for our 5th round pick this year. He is currently signed through 2019 but we extend him through 2021. This makes sense because Seattle is desperate to clear cap space and Wagner is a big cap hit for them. You can debate this from the angle of giving up draft picks; however, Wagner is an excellent player in this league. Jets have a history of doing business with the Seahawks. Finally, I put a premium on the team having a few players who've won a title in this league.

CAP SPACE = 88M

FA PICKUPS:

QB Kirk Cousins (40M cap hit). The contract is front-loaded to help us out in future years. I don't think I have anything new to say about this. He makes us relevant for the next 5+ years, etc.

OC Weston Richburg (10M cap hit). We need a center so we get one of the better ones available to protect our new QB. He gets a 4 year deal averaging 10M per year.

CB Prince Amukamara (10M cap hit). We sign this decent starter because we currently have nobody good at CB and he is a player who will do well enough and not break the bank. 2 year deal averaging 10M per year.

WR Randall Cobb (8M cap hit) (Cap casualty of Packers). Either Cobb or Jordy Nelson will likely be released this offseason. It's hard to believe that Cobb is only 27. It would be easy to cast him aside due to dropping production. But let's remember the issues that Rodgers has had staying healthy. I like Cobb as another good, if not great receiver, to go forward with Kearse. We sign him through 2020 at 8M per year.

OLB Trent Murphy (8M cap hit). This is a one-year prove-it deal for Murphy, who got 9 sacks in 2016 before missing 2017 with an ACL.

CAP SPACE = 12M

NOTE ON CAP SPACE: Though it looks like the team has burned through all of its resources, most of the contracts are relatively cap-friendly or will extinguish within a couple years. For one, Kirk's huge cap hit will be dropping over the next 4 years. Amukamara's only under contract for 2 years, when a draftee will hopefully take his position. Trent Murphy is only on a one-year deal before draftee takes over. Demario Davis is only on a one-year deal.

In other words, the only contracts over 5M that we are "marrying" are for Kirk, Bobby Wagner, Jermaine Kearse, Randall Cobb, and Weston Richburg. I can live with those guys -- for me they are good players to invest the time and money into.

The 2019 cap space looks something like this: [130M - (Kirk's) 40M - (Richburg's) 10M - (Cobb's) 8M - (Kearse's) 7M - (Amukamara's) 10M - (Wagner's) 10M - (Seferian-Jenkins's) 5M) - (New draftees' 10M) = 30M to spend on whoever. Nobody good is a FA in 2019. (Except Robby and Kearse, addressed above).

DRAFT:

6. OG Quenton Nelson. I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. But then I remembered how nice it is to be able to run the ball consistently. This pick goes against my beliefs regarding player valuation (just like last year with Jamal Adams). However, my top 3 QBs are off the board. Saquon Barkley is off the board. Bradley Chubb is off the board. I want to trade down but everyone has unfortunately caught on that Josh Allen actually stinks. I'm in a position where I'm choosing between Minkah, Quenton Nelson, or reaching for the #1 CB, WR or EDGE. I've already got a new CB, WR and OLB on board. Ridley has not proven to be a top 5-10 pick. So I try to build a beast OL to make our run over the next 5 years.

37. RB Sony Michel. Quick, fast, tough, pass catching home-run hitter. He's an all-around beast. Characteristics we need on this team.

49. CB Jaire Alexander. Good player at a position that fills a need. He will be asked to start.

72. OLB Uchenna Nwosu. Awesome all-around OLB who can rush the passer and just keeps on going. Very easy player to like. We're thrilled that he is available since he doesn't put up outstanding 40time at combine.

109. RB John Kelly. Small but fearless pass-catching, agile running back who can break tackles.

2018 LINEUP:

QB: Kirk Cousins / Christian Hackenberg

I'd like the Jets to draft Quentin Nelson in the 1st round and then Kyle Lauletta and Sony Michel in the 2nd round.

Then sign some OL like Norwell (the OG people rave about) and the center Jensen (who I think people on here said is the best FA center this year).  If there's a decent LT available draft him in the 3rd round or else sign one (Nate Solder?).

Then re-sign McCown and bring in Bridgewater.  Keep 4 QBs if the team still believes in Hack (as funny as that might sound).

We'd have an absolutely dominant OL and a great young RB to build around.  McCown could battle it out with Bridgewater (and Bridgewater has some real potential upside and would probably come at a reasonable price).  Lauletta would be the guy I'd groom for the future.  We'd still have plenty of cap room to fill in other holes.

I think the Jets will be moving forward with Winters, so they would need one of Nelson or Norwell.  Given the fit for zone blocking in particular, the should be thinking about moving on from Carpenter sooner rather than later.

Winters is not cuttable this year. If we are going to invest in another lineman who could be extra or put cap space on the bench, it should be a tackle.

If they drafted Nelson and a center high, that could give the Jets a relatively good value/long term solution for 2/5 of the line, which is a start.

Can Minkah play CB1?

Bowles used a lot of two down lineman in Arizona w/ 5 linebackers. So maybe you're on to something

I'm only giving Demario a one-year deal, so its not a very binding situation --

in theory it would give Bowles something close to what he had with in AZ...but really I'm just adding a very talented player for the long term.

He is a Safety who needs to have the ball in front of him IMO, really bad at getting his head a round to locate ball in man coverage, most Alabama CB’s have same problem for some reason.  So IMO Minkah is a NFL Safety, we have drafted 3 SS with our 1st, and 2nd round picks the last 2 years (Lee is like a bad, real bad SS, and a bad MLB, he would work best as an OLB in a 4-3 IMO), so Minkah would be the Jets new CF Safety so sounds like a Jetsiest pick to make maybe tied with Quenton Nelson, I’d assume if the Jets can get Cousins to accept the blank check those are your 2 favorites if the Jets stay put at 6.
