JetNation
The New York Jets have exercised the options on a pair of key defensive players for the 2018 season. As expected, the Jets exercised options for NT Steve McLendon and LB Josh Martin, sources confirmed. (First… https://t.co/7PlWLOHHog — Rich Cimini (@RichCimini) February 20, 2018 Underrated defensive lineman Steve McLendon and outside linebacker/special teams ace Josh Martin both had their options picked up by Gang Green. We mentioned just a few days ago that both moves would make sense, but McLendon’s return was a no brainer as one of the better defensive players on the roster even if his work goes unnoticed. Martin started a career-high 9 games, registering 31 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Meanwhile, McLendon posted a career-high of his own with 46 tackles as a versatile member of the Jets D-line. #27TheDominator
What a relief. That is two more starters locked up!
Sarge4Tide
Good move, both solid contributors and reasonably priced vets
Sully80
Can't believe people were clamoring for Jets to release McLendon, guy was great last year, one less position to worry about.

I think it's just so there's a body so we aren't forced into taking his position, allowing Mr. BAP to work his magic. Especially if we need to use our top pick on a QB (even more so if they use one of our 2nd rounders to move up from #6 for a QB); Cousins isn't signed until he's signed. In all seriousness, Martin's $ is that of a backup player worse than he is. Every backup can't be literally draftees who may or may not be worthy of seeing the field, and league-minimum players who just beat out the other camp fodder. Martin's fine in this role but, as you say, just so long as he's not the starter for the year. I doubt he will be, barring injuries bumping him up into that role. There's also the possibility he could be traded to someone else in that situation later on, as he'd probably have gotten more than $1.8m as a UFA if we declined his option. These were both correct moves. Doesn't mean we're set at their positions. Not even McLendon, whose play allows the Jets to find his eventual replacement now, without getting painted into a corner to force the pick earlier on in 2019. Just hope he doesn't ignore this because it's not an immediate need/hole. Not to mention McL doesn't need to be out there every down at his age. He's not old-old, but he's 32 not 24. Tony MaC
It's really a shame Deon Simon hasn't stepped up. Not sure what happened to that guy, last I heard he was put on the practice squad. Martin just reminds me of the perpetual need to find a weak side rusher. Jordan Jenkins is fine on the strong side, but there needs to be some kind of consistent pressure off the edge somewhere and JJ is only average at that.
