I can actually see the draft play out like this...

and if it does I Will be Very Happy...

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000916761/article/charles-davis-mock-draft-10-bengals-land-qb-of-future

With the NFL Scouting Combine (March 2-5 on NFL Network) a little more than a week away, here's my initial mock of the 2018 NFL Draft. Per usual, quarterbacks will dominate the conversation leading up to the draft in April. I have five QBs going in Round 1 in my first mock, although I expect that free agency will change the outlook for which QBs will land where, and how many will hear their name called in the opening round.

NOTE: There's a tie for the ninth overall pick. A coin flip between the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders will determine which team picks first.

PICK 1

CLE.png  Sam Darnold - QB, USC

Yes, there are questions about turnovers, but there are plenty of magical plays on tape, as well. Obviously, the Browns are hoping that pixie dust travels with him to Cleveland.

PICK  2

NYG.png  Saquon Barkley - RB, Penn State

The most talented runner in the draft since (fill in the blank). He's a true three-down player with a very special set of skills. If the Giants turn him down, it's for a QB.

PICK  3

IND.pngBradley Chubb - DE, N.C. State

The best edge rusher in the draft. Chubb will provide the Colts their best pressure since the days of Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis.

PICK 4

CLE.png   Minkah Fitzpatrick - DB, Alabama

I've stated tongue-in-cheek (somewhat) that the Browns should consider taking a QB at No. 1 AND 4, but good sense will reign, and this versatile defender helps Cleveland improve its takeaway quotient.

PICK  5

DEN.png  Josh Rosen - QB, UCLA

The Broncos are used to having very strong personalities at QB when they are at their best (John Elway, Peyton Manning), and Rosen is a bright, opinionated young man with the best arm talent in the draft. He also could easily be the most scrutinized prospect this year.

PICK  6

NYJ.png  Baker Mayfield - QB, Oklahoma

"Broadway Baker" has a ring to it. He has the skill set, and personality, to embrace NYC.

PICK  7

TB.png  Denzel Ward - CB, Ohio State

There is a huge need for a pass rusher, but another talented pass defender is welcome in the NFC South.

PICK  8

CHI.png  Quenton Nelson - OG, Notre Dame

Instant starter with a mean streak a mile wide who will help protect last year's No. 1 pick for the Bears, QB Mitchell Trubisky.

PICK  9

SF.png  Tremaine Edmunds - LB, Virginia Tech

The team of John Lynch (GM) and Kyle Shanahan (HC) collaborated last year to get the Niners back on the road to respectability. They continue down that path with this athletically gifted defender.

PICK  9

OAK.png  Roquan Smith - LB, Georgia

Diagnose, run, hit. Diagnose, run, cover, hit. Rinse. Repeat. I love this playmaking thumper so much that I voted him third for last year's Heisman Trophy.

PICK  11

MIA.png  Marcus Davenport - DE, UTSB

Yes, he's raw. However, putting heat on the QB is a huge part of the game in the NFL, and rushing the passer is what he does best.

PICK  12

CIN.png  Josh Allen - QB, Wyoming

They need help at a number of spots, but the Bengals might not be able to resist hitting the reset button for the future with this strong-armed Cowboy.

PICK  13

WAS.png  Vita Vea - DT, Washington

I loved the building-block pick of Jonathan Allen last year, and Vea's selection continues to bolster the defense. For a BIG man, he makes a lot of hustle plays, as well.

PICK  14

GB.png  Josh Jackson - CB, Iowa

The Packers drafted another lengthy corner last year in Kevin King, and this instinctive Hawkeye nearly had double-digit interceptions last season (eighth)

PICK  15

ARI.png  Connor Williams - OT, Texas

The Cardinals are most definitely in the QB market, but Williams has excellent technique and a good dose of nasty to help them bolster their OL.

PICK  16

BAL.png  Orlando Brown - OT, Oklahoma

Yes, it would honor his father, the late former Raven Orlando "Zeus" Brown, but more importantly, it helps the 2018 Ravens in a huge way, bookending LT Ronnie Stanley with this mountain of a prospect on the right side.

PICK  17

LAC.png  Derwin James - S, Florida State

James is a big hitter, but he has plenty of range in coverage, as well. He might not be exactly like former Charger Eric Weddle, but he could provide a similar impact.

PICK  18

SEA.png  Mike Hughes - CB, UCF

The Seahawks hit it big last year with a third-round CB from the same school in Shaquill Griffin, and they would expect similar results from this shifty, tough cover man. The Legion of Boom makeover is underway.

PICK  19

DAL.png  Calvin Ridley - WR, Alabama

The Cowboys need a young, big target to help QB Dak Prescott push the ball downfield, and Ridley provides exactly that option.

PICK  20

DET.png  Maurice Hurst - DT, Michigan

The Lions did not have to go far to scout him. They need his stoutness and get-off in the middle of the DL.

PICK  21

BUF.png  Da'Ron Payne - DT, Alabama

Head coach Sean McDermott's background is defense, and Payne helps him continue to build from the inside out. Payne was a force in the CFB Playoff.

PICK  22

BUF.png  Billy Price - C, Ohio State

With the unfortunate news that Eric Wood's career is coming to an end due to injury, Price could plug right in and help keep the Bills' ground attack rolling. Ohio State has been cranking out quality centers in recent years.

PICK  23

LA.png  Isaiah Oliver - CB, Colorado

Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips' versatility gets an added dose of secondary help with this talented CB.

PICK  24

CAR.png  Christian Kirk - WR, Texas A&M

The Panthers have plenty of size at WR. Kirk gives them the speed that they have been seeking to put DBs on their heels.

PICK  25

TEN.png  Harold Landry - LB, Boston College

New head coach Mike Vrabel likes to be aggressive in his calls, and while Landry had a better 2016 than 2017, he definitely has some juice.

PICK  26

ATL.png  Isaiah Wynn - OG, Georgia

Wynn was a tremendous LT for the Bulldogs, and I think he will be an instant starter at OG for the Falcons. He had an excellent Senior Bowl week of practices at his new spot inside.

PICK  27

NO.png  Rashaan Evans - LB, Alabama

The Saints really made a jump on defense last season. Now they add an ILB who can run and make sideline-to-sideline plays in a division built on speed.

PICK  28

PIT.png  Derrius Guice - RB, LSU

The questions about Le'Veon Bell's future will continue, barring a long-term deal, and the Steelershedge their bets with an RB who can fly but also run inside and catch.

PIC2  29

JAC.png  Lamar Jackson - QB, Louisville

There will be plenty of breakdowns of his game, but smart OCs will figure out ways to "meet him halfway" by utilizing concepts/schemes that play to his strengths (and can hurt defenses). A beyond-exciting playmaker who feels he has something to prove.

PICK  30

MIN.png  Mike McGlinchey - OT, Notre Dame

The Vikings OL made a huge jump last season, and perhaps the best LT in CFB makes them even better. McGlinchey might make the move to RT if the Vikings keep Mike Remmers inside at OG.

PICK  31

NE.png  Ronnie Harrison - S, Alabama

He moves and hits. Harrison was trained by one of the best secondary coaches in Nick Saban, whose close relationship with Bill Belichick is well documented.

PICK  32

PHI.png  Donte Jackson - CB, LSU

The Eagles' secondary did an excellent job at tackling -- and not permitting big runs after the catch -- last season. Jackson adds his talents to the mix, and he can play inside, as well.

I could absolutely see this play out like this. If we didn't need to worry about trade ups I'd head right into the draft to fill QB. I do think that 1 - 2 - 3 will want to stay in the top 6 picks because of the caliber of player but picks 4 and 5 are more of a toss up since the Browns would have already made a pick, hopefully they just take the BPA since they have so many picks already. The Broncos are tough to gauge because teams will be looking to jump us but I think if they get Cousins the NFL Nelson will be high on their board.

I just had a vision of a trade-happy frenzy at the top of the draft. It goes like this:

1. Saquon Barkley, CLE (because they’ve  signed AJ McCarrons, and are cool grabbing one of the remaining QBs to sit behind him, or a top notch DB at 4)

2. Josh Rosen, NYG (they were debating the talented RB, but now, getting to the top QB on their board isn’t a bad consolation prize. Their defense is stacked, offense just needs some protection up front and a talented passer to accurately feed their many offensive weapons)

3. *TRADE* Sam Darnold, DEN (Indy drops down to #5, and picks up a second round pick. Elway gets his big-bodied, gun slinging franchise QB who had Houdini moves)

4. *TRADE* Bradley Chubb, NYJ (the  Jets/Browns connection strikes again... between swapping players, and picks, and coaches, these bottom dwellers have been playing draft-day footsie since the 80s. In this move, the Jets GM picks up a sorely needed pass rushing phenom to FINALLY apply pressure to opposing QBs. This move also nets his previous top picks with more pressure-induced turnovers, making the back-to-back safety picks look like a stroke of genius. All of this ego feeding is too good to pass up, and the Jets, once again get the “draft’s best defensive player” at 6.  The cost? 200 chart points which is a 3rd out with a 5th back. Not a bad move for Jets, not a bad get for the Browns)

5. Quentin Nelson, IND (well that back-fired! Colts thought for sure they could slip behind another QB-needy franchise and still get their pass rusher. However, in this case, replacing their talented/injured free agent LG (Mewhort) with a top talent in the draft, which also helps protect their FQB and addresses the teams true need—check out their OL stats, this pick becomes a blessing in disguise, and with an extra 2nd, they can add some speed to their new defense).

6. CLE, still gets their pick of the remaining QBs, or the top DB on their board. And with the Jets (high) 3rd rounder, they get to further retool their GMs new roster.

I agree with all, but the first pick.

The Browns have shown no interest in Darnold at all, but much interest to other QB's (Mayfield, Allen)

You're basing that on what? Unfortunately, my father and brother are die hard browns fans -- and Allen hasn't been brought up 1x except by twitter folk fishing for a storyline. They're all about Baker and Darnold in Believeland.

Not a fan of pass rushers, or not a fan of this draft’s BEST pass rusher?

Talk about most inflated prospect in the draft (next to Allen) -- if he's the "best" pass rusher in the draft, then I think I'll get my sack-attack via FA. Chubb is too short on burst and speed for me to sign off on a top 10 pick, let alone trading up. That's von miller territory, and Von Miller he is not.

Respectfully disagree. While he’s not a twitchy Von Miller, his get-off is fine, his strength is off the charts, and his motor is nonstop.

He's got a motor, no arguing that. I like this technique too. To me, he's probably a late 1st rounder, and a low risk draft pick. But I don't see someone who's going to set our defense on fire. Not burning our #6 on that guy, def not trading up.

Going into this thing with a QB already signed, who do YOU draft?

Dunno if I have a great answer for that, unfortunately. If QB is off the table... it's not looking good. No OTs, Barkley likely gone (otherwise he's the pick)... can't stomach another DB... i'm not high enough on Chubb... Sigh. Nelson? That's part of the reason i've been so adamant about drafting a QB. There's nothing else but DBs.

Chubb i guess? lol

If wind up with Cousins, and Barkley's gone -- which he will be -- then we're walking away with a DB/LB/DE... fcking hell. Why are we cursed to crawl?

While the Cousins argument is a strong one, god dammit if going QB in the draft doesn't make life so much easier.

When Mayfield is available at 6 when we pick, and we smartly pass on him, Mayfield will also still be sitting in that green room like a couple other embarrassed guys for a long time, and I will laugh not at Mayfield, but at all the Mayfield ball lickers because of flag planting, and crouch grabbing lol.

I think its realistic to see Giants and Colts trade out from their spots.

I think they both want to fill a bunch of areas and will try to do so moving down.

Darnold

Allen

Rosen

and yet, if the jets or broncos have cousins, i'm not sure there will be that much of a market to trade up to #2 to get rosen or allen.  teams will force the giants hand and they'll have to draft a qb and piss off eli or chubb or barkley.  when all is said and done there will be qbs falling beyond 6.

if the jets have cousins though, you look at these mock drafts and picks 7-20 and there really isn't much that's appealing.  the pass rushers and #1 wrs aren't there.  the LTs are not considered elite.  your best offensive line prospect by far is a guard.  so for the jets if they have cousins i fully expect them to take nelson so mccagnan gets his low bust pretty good player in round 1.

He's not going to the draft.  So he'll be embarrassed at home.
