Pauline: Free agency rumors

Free Agency Chatter

  • As I initially reported during the Senior Bowl, expect extensive talks between the New York Jets and Weston Richburg during the free agency period. The New York Giants are unlikely to keep their former starting center, and Richburg to the Jets is something both sides want to happen. The Jets need help at guard and an upgrade at center; Richburg can play both spots.
  • We also reported from the Senior Bowl that the Giants are expected to make a concerted effort to sign guard Andrew Norwell. If they can’t sign the pricey free agent, I’m told Ryan Jensen will be a less-expensive contingency plan.
  • D.J. Fluker is another offensive lineman who is unlikely to stay with the Giants. Potential destinations for Fluker include the Miami DolphinsArizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks.
  • I’m told Trumaine Johnson is the No. 1 target for the Oakland Raiders in free agency and that the team will make a pointed effort to sign the cornerback. Johnson is expected to have numerous suitors once free agency opens, and Oakland views Johnson as a great pairing with Gareon Conley.

Keep This in the Back of Your Mind

  • There’s a lot of talk surrounding the Dolphins trading receiver Jarvis Landry, who was recently franchised. Several in the league tell me they believe a Landry trade won’t happen until draft day, as the receiver could be used as ammunition to move up and secure one of the top three quarterbacks should any of trio start to slip. Dolphins general manager Mike Tannenbaum made a similar move with the New York Jets when he traded up for Mark Sanchez in the 2009 draft. Though Sanchez did not have a stellar career in New York, he did lead the team to consecutive appearances in the AFC title game. People also point to the fact that Tannenbaum is close to Super Bowl-winning GM Howie Roseman of the Eagles and would like nothing more than to mimic Roseman’s success in making a bold move for a young quarterback and striking gold.  Speculation is Josh Rosen is the signal caller of choice.
  • I’m told there’s a good chance the Seattle Seahawks dangle either Richard Sherman or Earl Thomas in trade talks this week. Thomas is more marketable, as he’s in the final year of his contract and is due $10.4 million in 2018 -- $2.8 million less than Sherman, who watched his season end with a torn Achilles last November and will turn 30 in March.

I swear Mac if you let Tannenbaum make a move up past us...

What’s going on with the Giants and Richburg?

Why wouldn’t they want to resign him

Probablyl because they are happy with Brett Jones who started after Richburg went down with injury.  He is an RFA next year and will be a lot cheaper than Richburg.

If we lose out on Cousins AND any team picking behind us moves up in front of us to get Darnold or Rosen, I’m don with this front office and coaching staff.

That will be completely inexcusable and indefensible.  I might even go to Met Life and pack their crap.

I was done with the coaching staff after they punted with 4 minutes left in the 4th quarter down 2 scores.

I've been easy with Mac, his record is patchy which I've been happy to wear in his first couple of years.

But, with :

  • $80M+ in cap space
  • The 6th pick
  • 2 x 2nd rounders
  • A mandate to pay over the odds to get a QB and the fan base will wear it

Coming out of it all and having only a Teddy Bridgewater to show would be unforgivable.

I actually appreciate a level headed guy who isn't pressured into doing something flashy. But cometh the hour cometh the man. And the hour for a QB has cometh and he has to be committed. A Bridgewater or a 4th round project isn't a acceptable answer here.

It’s their tackles that suck. Richburg was good when he played. Just concerned about the concussion thing.

I don’t get why the Jets want the Giants garbage, and have more money while the Giants want Norwell, and Jensen, and we prefer Richburg.  Makes zero sense unless it was a salary cap issue needing to settle for the lesser player for less money which the Jets have zero issue with.

So our entire division is aggressively searching a trade up for a QB while we sit on our hands hoping Cousins finds our money intriguing. Cool.

So how exactly, has it been determined that the Jets front office is "sitting on their hands"? FA hasn't started yet, and no trade for a draft pick except possibly #1 overall occurs until that pick is on the clock and the player you want is still available.  That's what I love about this board, the number of posters spouting completely unsupported BS as hard cold fact.

”Richburg top center in NFL last year.”

https://giantswire.usatoday.com/2017/06/25/new-york-giants-weston-richburg-best-pass-blocking-center-2016/

“Best pass blocking center of 2016.”

“Giants Center Weston Richburg has yet to allow a sack, allowed 0 pressures against the Cowboys and Eagles

Top 5 center in pass blocking efficiency: 98.6”

Really Lupz?

It was more of a facetious statement and the probable event in my opinion. But go ahead and continue to act as if Macc is going to make the ‘right’ move at the ‘right’ time because god knows there are facts to support that as well.

Yeah, but isn’t he coming off a season ending injury?  Not many games played last year.

Like then why wouldn’t the Giants just keep him instead of go after other FA’s that will cost similar to possibly more $$$$?

I’m not suggesting I know better, I’m asking the question because I’m not that caught up in the FA OL class.

I didn't say anything pro or con on Macc. Best word for his drafting overall so far would be mediocre. Just saying there was no basis for the sitting on his hands comment. In fact during college season (the last time there would have been anything public going on) it was widely reported that he was heavily scouting at least Sam and the two Joshes (Don't remember any reports on him scouting Mayfield or Jackson that I remember)

https://articles.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2018/01/giants_weston_richburg_says_he_was_cleared_from_co.amp

"I got cleared medically by the specialist like three or four weeks ago, but I was getting good there for a while," Richburg said as the Giants packed up their lockers on Monday. "I wanted to play. But that's just the way it turned out this year."

Richburg started the first four games, suffering the concussion in a Week 4 loss to the Buccaneers . Richburg missed the next three games before suddenly being placed on IR the day before the Giants' Week 9 matchup with the Rams to make room for defensive back Tim Scott.

"I didn't want to go. I thought I was turning the corner, about to be ready to go and then that happened," Richburg said. "My job is to play and I wanted to be here playing with my guys. It's hard to be away when they're going through the things that they went through. But that's how this thing turned out."

I have idea why he didn’t play, tbh.

Look, I’m usually the first once to say something about ppl acting as if things are facts with zero factual evidence to support said claim. Agree. It happens a lot here, but as I said I was more or less being facetious.

The issue for me is, I see Macc waiting on a conclusion with Cousins while the rest of the QB hungry teams try to do what it takes to get a draftee. Cousins is rumored to want to visit each place and it will take time for a decision. Gambling with time is not a game I want to play. I feel a huge sense of urgency to get something done trade wise before another team does...god forbid a division opponent, at that. Hope that clears up some of what I previously posted.

There is six weeks from FA to draft. So I am sure the Cousins sweepstakes will be long over by draft time. Trades ( other than a monster move to #1) will not happen until draft day. Right now you have combine, pro days, visits. Allof which will be widely reported on. If there is any evidence that Macc isn't 100% doing the leg work over the next few weeks I will gladly join you in roasting him.

Detroit Lions place franchise tag on Ezekiel Ansah

The Detroit Lions are making sure Ezekiel Ansah stays with the team for 2018.

The Lions franchise tagged Ansah on Tuesday in a move that will pay him $17.5 million for 2018 once he signs his tender, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.

Ansah proved to be one of the NFL's best edge rushers in 2017, finishing with 12.0 sacks, 44 total tackles (39 solo), one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. No player had more sacks than Ansah in the second half of 2017 (he tied Chandler Jones with eight), and he finished the year with back-to-back three-sack games.

Ansah's late-season heroics helped propel him to a No. 5 ranking by Chris Wesseling and Gregg Rosenthal on NFL.com's Top 101 Free Agents of 2018.

Although Ansah's on-field numbers are impressive, the 28-year-old's struggles with injuries over the last two seasons didn't make him a slam dunk to return to Detroit for 2018 season. Still, it would have been strange if the Lions let the 6-foot-5, 276-pound pass rushing terror test free agency after being one of only two players to record double-digit sacks in two of the last three seasons. With hardly any other options available, it's a sensible move by general manager Bob Quinn.

The franchise tag lets the Lions keep one of the NFL's best defensive ends without committing to him long term -- and they have plenty of salary-cap space (roughly $44 million) to pay the expensive tender. Ansah gives new head coach Matt Patricia a fine building block to construct the Lions' defense as he sees fit.

The Lions, who last used the franchise tag in 2012 on Cliff Avril, have until July 16 to sign Ansah to a long-term contract. He joins Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry as the only two players to be tagged so far this offseason. The franchise tag designation window closes March 6.
