Offseason thoughts

1. What makes this offseason so fascinating for the Jets is that there are so many realistic permutations and combinations at QB that can bear out, both in FA and the draft. If Cousins goes to Minny for example, that releases 3 QBs into the FA market. Cousins can sign with the Jets himself. If Cousins signs with Denver, a QB destination ahead of the Jets in the draft goes away. If Mike Maccagnan, whom as you know I have supported, doesn't improve the QB situation in some fashion this offseason, he should be let go immediately. There are too many possibilities out there to end up with the same 3 QBs as last year.

2. Reports are that the Jets are chatting with Giants C Weston Richburg. I believe FA is the place to attack center, and it also seems that the Jets seem to have good luck with players that are injury prone (LaRon Landry, Morris Claiborne, Josh McCown etc) Even if they don't sign him I think FA is the time to attack C.

3.  I have been boggled at the dichotomy between the national media and the local media in how Bowles is looked at and after thinking about it, I've brought it down to three reasons.

A: This has been mentioned a lot on here, but the fact that the national media really doesn't pay attention to Jets games and actually dont see him coach. They just see the end results and what their expectations were coming in and base it off of that. Also I think when he meets with broadcasters in the week leading up to the game, he does a good job representing himself.

B: Compared to other coaches in the league, Bowles is not as bad as we think he is. There was a lot of bad coaching in the postseason and it got me to thinking that maybe we are a victim of the thinking the grass is greener.

C: I think this has to be mentioned and I think it does play a minor role in it, but the fact that Bowles is black probably means that some in the media are afraid to criticize him, especially in a big market like New York.

I think the National media pretends Bowles is better than he is for three reasons:

1. He’s the only human on the payroll that has any connections around the league, and he has a lot of relationships with media types, especially ones who are ex-players.

2. Like Jeff Fisher, Bowles sounds like a football coach when he speaks.

3. When these broadcast teams parachute in for games and they have to do the minimal research they do to act like they know anything about the Jets, it becomes obvious that the talent level is horrible and nobody associates talent level with the head coach.

I think 2 and 3 are kind of in the same category. which I agree with, partially.

As for the first one, I dont know what connections he could have to Albert Breer and Jason LaCanfora

The NFL of Charley Casserly is an Old Boy Network where scouting is done by feel and from what college coaches tell you.  Analytics are for nerds.  Paying your dues and loyalty are rewarded.

Mac and Bowles are good guys.  Bowles is a Parcells guy who is not white.  Bowles is like the emperor-no one wants to tell him he has no clue and is over his head, but he has no clue and is over his head.   You when to really panic?  When Brian Heimerdinger bails on Mac like the other guy did.  The best stuff “Mac” has done has been the pro FAs, and they are Brian.  Mac is the draft, and we know how that has gone.

Mac worked for Casserly and seems like a nice guy who goes along to get along.  The Texans did not seem like a team to hire from, and they just hired Brian Gaine, another former Parcells guy, to replace that idiot Rick Smith Mac worked for.

So the Johnsons got rolled when they reached out to Casserly for hires, and they basically got the two guys the Old Boy NFL establishment wanted to promote.  The Bills hired an OC from Alabama.  The Patriots develop from within.  The Eagles’ GM is a smart guy who does not really have a football background.  But the Johnsons allow it.  Let’s see what they do.  I would like to be pleasantly surprised, and I wish them no harm personally.  They seem like nice, good, loyal guys.  But they are clueless as to what it takes to build a top football organization.

I would love to be proven wrong, but I don’t think I will.
