What a disappointment. we manhandled nothing. we got off to a big lead which included a KR Td by leon. we blew the big lead and had to win in OT against the Matt Cassell playoff-less Pats. 2008 was a big disappointment, the AFC was down, the league was down. the SB was a great game but it was probably the weakest SB of all time. neither team was great, they took advantage of a down year across the league. we could have been a Super Bowl team but Brett favre killed us. The only positive is it would lead to Mangini being fired, rex being brought in and 2 championship game apps where at least we were close to SBs but we could have made a real run in 2008 w/ better QB play. Jets were kicking their butts half way through the 2nd quarter to the tune of 24-6. Then Mangini got conservative and went in to that prevent defense. All the prevent defense does is prevent you from winning. And Mangini almost succeeded as the pats were able to tie it in the very last second. Then, finally, the Jets decided to get aggressive again. So they drove right down the field in OT, kicked a field goal and walked off the field in victory. If the Jets had kept their foot on the gas the whole way, they would have dropped 45 on the pats.

Not going to go so far as to say I thought they would win out, but I remember thinking we were as good as anyone in the AFC at that point. After those two big road wins, I thought we were a legit SB contender. And then, in true Jet fashion we lose 4 of the last 5.
Ohio State NY Jets fan
That was fun; won 7 of 8 games, the 5th opponent held to under 50 yards rushing and the Jets had scored at least 34 points in three consecutive games! Some of my favorite times as a Jets fan, that team was rolling and fun to watch the following 5 games and scandles were more familiar

Only other time I’ve witnessed that was roughly five minutes before Testaverde blew out his Achilles.
Miss Lonelyhearts
So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark, that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back. Then it was 24-21 heading to the 4th, we didn't whip them for 4 qtrs. we got out to a fast start, blew the lead then found a way to win. I am very critical of favre as I think he destroyed a great opportunity that season but he made a great play in OT on a 3rd down to keller I believe or it would have been a 3 and out to start OT and we likely would have lost. as it turned out the game became meaningless but at the time it was pretty big. I remember going into that stretch of NE and Ten talking to a Jet fan co-worker of mine. I wasn't impressed at 6-3, I didn't think we were very good and thought it was fools gold beating some bad teams. I told him I hoped they could split and that I'd believe in them if they won both. They won both, I became a believer then they tanked it.
JetsFanatic
The turning point of the 2008 season was Farve’s shoulder injury. If he didn’t get injured, the Jets could have won the AFC.

UntouchableCrew
Absolutely hilarious that anyone could seriously believe the 2008 Jets were "derailed by bad QB play" but the 2009-10 Jets were "led to back to back title games by Mark Sanchez." The real "what if" for Jets fans in this era (not going back as far as Belichick staying, drafting Manning, or even Vinny staying healthy) is what if Favre stuck around in 2009 after Rex came on board. That team might have won something.

I believe they were that good. Do you think Mancini should have been fired after the teams disappointing finish? I do. Rex lost Jenkins after only 3 games in 2009, but the defense never lost a step. Rex coached up Devito and Pouha and the defense was ranked number 1.

I think he'd have some success in a president of football ops type role now, but he was too young and inexperienced to be his style of coach. Beerfish
When people talk about 'continuity' and such and the fact that the jets pull he trigger on firings too fast, Mangini is one of the few people I would attach that mantra too. He should have stayed. (And the Jets were the best team in the league at that 8-3 point of the year. They bitch slapped NE and then took apart the undefeated league darlings Tennessee.) He was incapable of patching the center of the defense when the players needed to fix the issue were right in front of him. Truly they were playing so poorly they should have lost out. K_O_Brien
Most disappointing season ever for me. An all-time classic Jets collapse. Heading into Week 13, you are looking to secure the number one seed in the conference. By week 16, your season is over, and you finish third in the division. Only the Jets. It was the manner of the late season losses that made it so much worse and the terrible teams we lost to. The Broncos, 49ers, and Seahawks were mediocre that year. That loss in Seattle is still painful. Their entire o-line was beat up, Seneca Wallace was in at QB, they scored a grand total of 13 points and still beat us. From potential heroes to zeroes in a month.

SAR I
4 hours ago, gEYno said: Facts don’t support this stance. But, they’re not important... Facts? Cool. Best postseason quarterback in team history in wins, TD's, QBR. Best regular season quarterback in team history making playoffs in back to back years and winning 2 postseason games in each. Best Jet on the field in two consecutive AFC Championship Games. Record of 16-4 over a 20 game stretch is best in team history. Best season of 4th quarter comebacks in team history turning 5 sure losses into miracle wins, transforming a disappointing 6-10 season into an 11-5 campaign, second-best in team history. I'm not saying what Mark Sanchez accomplished is exceptional at an NFL level. What I am saying is that what Mark Sanchez accomplished as a New York Jet is exceptional. You'd think now entering our 6th season after he was mistreated and scapegoated after seeing such crap under center since his departure you'd finally see the light. The decision that fans like you supported of dumping Mark Sanchez to "improve" at the QB position was one of the worst in team history. Looking back, the better decision would have been to get rid of the lousy head coach and build a legitimate offense around a 22 year old who had shown such promise so early.
