Report: Muhammad Wilkerson blames Jets' lack of winning for wearing him down

Just when it seemed like the Jets were done with Muhammad Wilkerson’s drama, it appears the defensive end is taking shots at his former team on his way out the door.

Now that Wilkerson has been officially granted his release, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Wilkerson will meet with the Packers. That’s not much of a surprise, as former Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine recently took over as Green Bay’s defensive coordinator. Given Wilkerson’s familiarity with Pettine, Green Bay seems like the perfect spot for Wilkerson to rejuvenate his career.

What is surprising is Wilkerson’s reported explanation for his disappointing final seasons in New York. According to Tom Silverstein of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Wilkerson is blaming his poor behavior and lack of production on all the losing the Jets have done:

Wilkerson has told people he desperately wants to play for a winning organization, and he might have been worn down in New York. In his seven seasons, the Jets were 46-66 and didn’t make the playoffs.

Have the Jets been the most successful organization in Wilkerson’s time with the team? Not by a long shot. However, such a sentiment, if true, is comical given Wilkerson’s repeated tardiness, benchings and run-ins with the media over the last two seasons.

Ever since Wilkerson received his lucrative five-year, $86 million contract extension, the once-dominant defensive end has been mailing it in. Once Wilkerson got his payday, there was little incentive for him to show up and put in the work that got him that contract in the first place.

Wilkerson did nothing to contribute to the team’s success the last two seasons. Once a leader on New York’s defense, he became the perfect example of what not to be in the NFL for New York’s younger players.

Combine Wilkerson’s attitude problems with his declining numbers and it’s hard to fathom that he could be worn down by the lack of winning. If anything, he wore his teammates, coaching staff and front office down.

Wilkerson previously claimed that he earned every penny of his contract, but in reality, he didn’t earn a single cent. If the Packers choose to continue their pursuit of him, they should be wary.

Chances are he’ll contribute more distractions than on-field production.

Dear Mr. Wilkerson,

Sorry Mo, but it's too late for lame excuses.  You had a rep for loafing back at Temple too.  You take plays off every season (even in your one good year here).  You, sir, are one of the reasons we have been losing, rarely playing up to your hype and salary.  You also demonstrated no leadership in the clubhouse at all.  You were aloof to your team mates and constantly sulked and brooded.  (How do I know this?  From a student of mine who interned there for a season.  And she had a lot of other insights about some that I have never posted here.)

Bye Mo.  Good luck in your future.  No hard feelings you lazy dog.

Sincerely,

Jets fan and Season Ticket Holder.

Once a schmuck always a schmuck.  do you think dumbass bowles will learn from this and from Revis?

Quit kissing these floating vets asses and start embarrassing them, and singling them out for crap play.

The guy should have had his ass on the bench most of last year, not because he missed meetings, but because he was far worse than whatever udfa  psquad jags we had hanging around other than about one game.

Todd and Macc let Cromartie and Revis float, which led to Mo and Sheldon floating, which will result in Leo and Darron Lee eventually floating. This regime let Ryan Fitzpatrick boss it around when he was legitimately the worst QB in the league. You can hate on Mo for letting go of the rope, but this is a trend that will continue.

add to Mo being a Turd, he brought Sheldon down with him. Folks said Sheldon was good in Florham and  was never late for mtgs etc, but then started gravitating  towards Mo's protege role and started his Florham Building Turd-ishness w/late Mtgs also.

Lack of winning and dog, floating overpaid vets who are supposed to carry the team.  There is some kind of correlation here i am sure but I cannot put my finger on it.

Makes you think that the Jets are looking for more character players in their locker room and are stressing good characters in the draft. Which is why a player like jamal Adams would be attractive to them

Cept they aren't  They are all about character in the draft but proceed to sign guys like ASJ and trade for Rashard Robinson and fial to dump Robbie Anderson.  The team does not have a solid plan or solid culture.  They flip flop in the wind on this issue.

Well ASJ had a drinking problem I think and went to rehab so that I have no problem with.

Robinson I have no idea what Macc was thinking there.

As for dumping Robbie Anderson, being nuts in general and being a disruptor in the locker room are two different things.

Charles Haley and John Matuzak were nuts and were both fine in locker rooms

Now THAT'S a stretch.

Is it?  We know they suck.  We see them every year dumping resources into D and the D is atrocious.  Further, the Jets were considered to have one of if not the best DL in the league.  Then something happened, the SONS are all gone and the only thing to show for it, is Leonard Williams being perfectly mediocre.

Wilkerson was obviously not worn down enough to prevent him from hitting the cupcake counter repeatedly at Florham Park.

I say we sign Crusher to replace him at NT. Make it happen Mac.
