Dion Lewis - Zone Blocking

So it looks like Dion Lewis is leaving the Pats and the numbers being thrown around are 3 years $18 million.

The allure of a rookie RB like Chubb (although I think he is a bad zone fit), Ronald Jones (good zone fit), etc. is huge and with this RB class we could find an explosive player, but we also have to spend FA money somewhere and I think Lewis could be an excellent fit as a one-cut, zone runner who has the ability to catch passes, and comes with proven NFL experience.

$6 million isnt a huge contract to pay a RB and it would allow us to take a QB at 6, WR (James Washington) in the 2nd and a lineman like Price if he fell or Ragnow the C/G from Arkansas.

Thoughts?

If it was 2015 Dion Lewis, he would be an insta upgrade and very worth it.  However his injury did slow him down a bit and I think he’s worth more like 4 or 5.  There are a lot of cheap rbs that are younger on the market.

He definitely doesn’t suck though.

I'm out on Lewis for sure. Particularly at that figure. Not a great injury history or a guy who's going to take the bulk of carries in the backfield. The Jets haven't drafted a RB in the second or third round since Shonn Greene. I think it's well overdue.

Think QB and CB and interior OL are clearly the most pressing spots in FA that I could see decent money being allocated to. Tight end is likely well below those contract wise but again a big need. Then a 5-tech is something you could probably spend less on but I'd rather spend a surplus on someone like Richardson than a back. Also ILB is a clear need but you just got a career year out of someone you traded Calvin Pryor to acquire so I wouldn't go crazy bringing one in.

From there I think you're going to get better value for your money if you find someone you want to splurge on at WR based on this class or OLB/RT if you find someone there - not huge needs but positions that clearly could be upgraded and have some guys in this FA class worth kicking the tires on.

I like Lewis, but that money would be better spent on OL/CB and obviously Cousins. This is a great RB draft and we already have Powell/Mcguire. If we don't land a RB with one of our 2 second round picks it will be like 2014 when in star studded WR Class Idzik passed on Adams/Robinson/Landry to take Amaro.

I really hate giving RB's second contracts that werent yours.  Especially ones who have an injury history coming out of a system that seems to always get similar production from the position.  That said, Lewis might be different.  He's a shifty dude who can catch the ball too and he doesnt have crazy miles on him.  It wouldnt be the worst signing in the world but I wouldnt be prioritizing him either.

Patriot RBs tend to suck once they leave the Patriots.

Pass.

If we're going to sign a RB in free agency, I'd go for Isaiah Crowell.

Yeah I don't like the thought of paying any player they let walk away. They typically aren't wrong.
