Don't know the history of this at all, but Manish has been spot on w/ everything he's said about Wilkerson otherwise, so I'm not sure I have reason to doubt him here.

Far be it from me to say anything nice about Wilkerson. But there's a real leap for objectively noticing that a guy has a crappy work ethic from stating as fact the guy has a substantiated case of alcoholism. What is he saying; Wilkerson, like many 20 something guys, sometimes comes to work hungover? Unless Mehta has some personal or professional background in dealing with alcoholics and applied it to his observations to make such a statement, it really is defamatory. He's stating what amounts to a medical diagnosis.  The mom's lawsuit threat may not be idle. If Mo can show teams didn't sign him or signed him for less, Mehta may have opened a trick box.

The Jets would be wise to get out in front of this to protect Mo, unless they think potential free agents and draft picks (coughMayfield) like the idea of Manish Mehta narcing on them in the papers. Mo Wilk should find the nearest ESPN reporter and make this a national story, just to further ruin the Jets offseason.

Scarier. Woody used his critique to steer away from Doug Marrone.

Stupid media mixed with impressionable owner. Baaaad

Again, Manish was saying this long before any of us believed him.  I'm not going to dismiss it out of hand.  I also don't care.  Wilkerson is gone for his on field performance/effort.

As for a lawsuit, Wilk's mom should probably be fearful of discovery and the damage that the results of that may do to her son.  Best for her ignore it and let the character assassinations (merited or not) of Manish do the job.

There was no reason for Mehta to say that at all. It was said simply to hurt Wilkerson. We're not in a prohibition, you can buy alcohol anywhere in this country. It doesn't matter if you're in Green Bay or New Orleans.

He definitely tweeted that to take a shot at Wilkerson. I'm not saying he's making things up. But he only tweeted that because of his issues that he's had with the guy.

Yeah, I’d have to guess that it’d be pretty easy to come up with a few witnesses and a hundred Instagram posts that’d testify to any NFL player liking his booze.

If Mehta is truly slandering Mo, this could be his undoing.

I mean, this is a real thing now. Unless this was in the ether anyway, Mo is going to have to answer these questions at every stop on his free agency tour, all because of a spiteful little spambot.

Yep. Mo could end up suing the Daily News over this if it affects his chances of being signed. If that happens Manish is finished.

This could get really messy.

Probably well past time to either take steps to isolate and marginalize him or ban him from the premises. And nobody should talk to him; not players coaches, front office, ownership, ball boys. Nobody.

Can they do that? Can they request that the Daily News assign another reporter to cover the team?

The only way Manish pays a price is if people stop clicking on his sh*t. His career lives and dies with pageviews.

Even if true, Mehta should not be outing Wilk as an alcoholic.  Hopefully the Daily News chitcan’s his ass.

Agreed. Manish may have hurt Mo's chances of getting signed by another team.

That said, Mo's mother may have made it worse by turning the whole thing into a spectacle.

Unless it's true.

Correct. The bottom line is that his play deteriorated for a reason. Maybe he is just simply a lazy good for nothing, but chances are there is something else and if he is an alcoholic he needs help. Shame on the Jets if they didn't address it with him if true. You may not like the messenger or how the message was delivered but in the end it may help. Now if it's an opinion based on heresay etc, then off with his head.

We have no way of knowing if the Jets tried to address it or not.  They, at least, were smart enough not to tweet it out.  But you can't force help on an a legal adult who doesn't want it.  And Wilk seems like he was past caring about much of anything beyond the next Krispy Kreme since the injury.  He's gone...he hurt the team and was a douchenozzle on the way out (lest we all forget his disparaging comments about the 'losing' being why he stopped trying)...f-ck him with the business end of a shovel.

Mehta is a tool but even if he gets canned, he will just be replaced with a carbon copy.  It's no coincidence that he turned into Cimini the moment he took over the beat.  So while we might enjoy seeing him get professionally destroyed, it won't change anything.

For once, the Jets are doing the right thing.  Staying completely out of a fight (publicly at least) between a reporter and a player that is not on their roster.

I used to work with a dude back in the day who had pictures of Lawrence Taylor and Jarrod Bunch repeatedly visiting a crack den in Queens, but no publication wanted any part of it because it was out of bounds. And this was at the height of the NY Post’s slimiest era. You just don’t run with substance abuse stories or outing side-chicks unless there’s an arrest involved.

+1.  But if he was too hung over to call on his own, he may have asked her to dial the number for him and then passed out before they answered.  What's a mom to do?

In fairness to Cimini, he was never this bad. He was a prick, but he never went out of his way to slander anyone.
