Jets now top NFL in cap Space

If Mike Maccagnan was hoping to start free agency with a financial leg up on all other bidders, yesterday was a good day for the GM.

Following a flurry of deals by the Cleveland Browns ,the Jets now top all other clubs in salary cap room according to overthecap.com at $89 million.  Previously, the Cleveland Browns topped the list, but they took on a $16 million hit by acquiring Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor and assumed responsibility for both his signing bonus and base salary.

Cleveland also took on the salary of former Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry, who was due to make $14 million this season.

The Browns had a busy day, shedding just under $1,000,000 is space when they unloaded quarterback DeShone Kizer.  A rookie last season, Kizer was arguably the worst quarterback in the NFL as he completed just 53% of his passes while throwing a whopping 22 interceptions.  Kizer was sent to Green Bay to back up Aaron Rodgers.

With $89 million to spend, the Jets are in a prime spot to make a lucrative offer to free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins, but that may not be enough.  Multiple reports from insiders have suggested that Cousins’ desire is to play in Minnesota where the Vikings are expected to be in position to offer Cousins a comparable dollar figure.

Should Cousins opt to go to Minnesota, the Jets should still be in prime position to pursue key free agents such as Allen Robinson or cornerback Kyle Fuller.  Teams can begin making offers (legally) on March 12th, with deals able to be signed on the 14th.

I know Macc likes to sit back and scoop up "value". But they need to be active from the bell. If Cousins goes to Minn, they still have to be active early. There will be enough value to be had over the next few weeks. But get somebody, anybody please.

Money is the last thing people without jobs are thinking about. Anyone deluding themselves into thinking money is some kind of difference maker does not understand the motives of these guys who mostly grew up poor and made it to FA in a league with an average career length of three years during which you might be cut for almost any reason at any time. These guys want to be happy and fulfilled, anyone who knows anything knows that money doesn't really make anyone happy.

Plus any small difference - say multi-millions of dollars - can be covered by endorsements they don't have and autographs they haven't signed yet or tax laws that definitely close multi-million dollar gaps in income. They'll be happy to do the extra work! Who isn't dying for a second and even third source of income (read: job) taken up to make up for the money you turned down at job #1?

Plus. The Vikings and the state of Minnesota are going to run out of money in a few months and the Jets will look like paradise by comparison with their cheap free safety

Even if that were true, making one whole playoff in a row basically quadruples the value of what little money they have left. That unprecedented level of success ranks them with the NFL's elite, right up there with the Bills or Patriots or Eagles and similar powerhouses (there's 31).

Value? What value? He started with a amassicve FA splash when he spent a boatload of cap (back then). The only reason he signed a few bargain FAs is because he put us in cap he’ll after inheriting over 50 mil in cap space (equivalent to about 70-80mil in today’s NFL). Only Mac

Cap room is wonderful in March.  If we still have most of it in June, it's not so good.  Let's see if Macc is able to deploy it well or just ends up with half of it unspent while other teams scoop up FAs that could have helped us (I'm looking at you, Andrew Norwell).

The Vikings can’t afford to keep all their talented players, but the Jets don’t have any talented players to keep. Boom problem solved, Mr. Cousins please sign on the dotted line

K: You don’t have any receivers really

M: how much does one of those cost?

K: Eighteen million

M: what if we just gave you another eighteen million and you can buy your own receiver

Finally some honesty, amirite!?? No biggie THO, total non-factor just like money!

The most value assets a team can have this offseason:

- At least one consecutive playoff appearance

- Draft picks later than 20 and 50

- A roster you can't afford by the end of 2018

We can fix a ton of holes on this team if MacC makes the right moves. This is a critical off season.

they aren't getting Cousins but they could be in the Allen Robinson and Trumaine Johnson markets big time.

Case Keenum and Sheldon but only if the price is right.

They will also need a TE and ILB to replace ASJ and Demario Davis, respectively.

Idzik got blown away his first day in free agency because he played footsie during the legal Tampering phase and then didn't deliver

There is no such thing as value with day 1 free agents in the context of current contracts. It takes a few years for them to be surpassed.

They have to make huge offers with take it or leave it conditions and not get stuck going back and forth with multiple visits.

I'm hoping they go after the 26 year Olds on their 2nd deal, not 30 year olds on their 3rd deal

Focus on the foundation of QB  oline and pass rush

Money has no value! No clue what this time value of money thing is but it should be zero every year or however it works. As I understand it based on reading the studies here, money's just this social construct in place so greedy people forget that true joy and winners come from working for less.

Plus the Vikings may pay him less, but they will compensate with more valuable things like hope.
