Baker Mayfield on combine meeting with Jets: 'Smooth'

Baker Mayfield was in New Jersey on Friday, but not to meet with the New York Jets or New York Giants. No, those meetings will occur in a few weeks. This time, he visited the Garden State to collect some hardware.

The former Oklahoma star was feted at the Tropicana Atlantic City, where the Maxwell Football Club honored him with the Maxwell Award, given to the nation's top player. Before the festivities, Mayfield talked about his meeting with the Jets at the NFL scouting combine last weekend in Indianapolis.

"I did meet with them," he said before his news conference. "The meeting went well. I met with them at the Senior Bowl for a little bit. Kind of had a small introduction with some of the offensive guys and more of their staff was there at the combine. Went smooth, watched some more film. Sat down and got to know them a little bit more. Talked through some ball, getting to know them at a personal level so they know what they are getting. Think it went well."

The Jets also met with top quarterback prospects Josh AllenSam Darnold and Josh Rosen at the combine. In Mayfield's case, they've arranged for a pre-draft visit to the team's facility and they will travel to Oklahoma for a private workout. If the Jets don't sign free agent Kirk Cousins, Mayfield -- and the others -- could be a consideration with the sixth pick in the draft.

Mayfield said he'd relish the intense spotlight that comes with playing in New York.

“I’d love to be drafted anywhere honestly, but to be able to play on a New York team -- the spotlight, the pressure, I think that’s something I really enjoy," he said at his news conference. "Having to live up to a high standard, I love setting expectations and standards high so that’s two spots that would fit pretty well for me.”

Mayfield was joined at the Maxwell gala by Alabama defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick, who received the 23rd Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation's top defensive player. He, too, could be a consideration for the Jets.

Fitzpatrick, coming off a national championship with the Crimson Tide, has lofty expectations for his rookie year.

“My first season I want to win a Super Bowl as a team, while at the same time establishing myself as the best defensive back in the league," he told a news conference. "On the draft process, nothing really surprised me. It’s a lot of hard work, but I’m also enjoying it at the same time. I really look at it as a blessing.”

I hope he is plan C behind Darnold, rosen and cousins.

And despite all the minkha jests that might be the one pick that would send me over the edge into the abyss.

Wouldn't that make him Plan D? Lol

I can't handle watching another USC QB turnover machine come in here and turn it over a sanchez amount.

But Darnold has that Favre aspect of being able to make super throws with solid accuracy, Sanchez couldn't hit water if he fell out of a boat.

Rumor is Browns want QB at 1.

No matter what people say - with all the uncertainty of the Giants or Indy possibly trading down Cleveland can not pass on a QB at 1 and hope the one they like falls to them.  Honestly, it would be management malpractice to roll the dice for a running back.  They have so many picks there will plenty of solid backs in round two if they want one...

Take Chubb at 4 if Barkely is gone and don't look back.  Cleveland will take a QB at 1.

Don’t yell at me but the way this is going, the Jets could get the draft’s first QB at 6. Giants definitely are out. Browns probably are out. Colts are out. Broncos can’t play a rookie so they seem set for Keenum or McCarron. Suddenly, Cousins doesn’t seem like the play.

I mean, I just can’t. The Bears traded up for the QB after Glennon. The Browns are sitting on the pick. So you’re telling me they bring in a 29YO QB and give him $16 million to play a few games? What if he plays well? Then you just sit on a top QB pick for how long?

Which means Rosen or Darnold, who are 1 and 1A

I honestly have no idea who likes who - the QB's can go in any order - but I don't see how Cleveland passes on a QB at 1.

Peronsally, I think the Giants will take one too.

Well all's said I done I doubt there will be any trades in the top 6.

Lots of science in there. Can you break it down for us laymen

The Colts are a trade down possibility anyway. And unless the Giants are pulling off one of the greatest smoke screens of all time, they are up for grabs too

when push comes to shove the Giants will take a QB - Colts won't pass on Barkely and Cleveland at 4 will take Chubb...it's an impact player league - if they're there - you can't give me enough Jag 2nd rounders for one player that can change a game.

Maybe a trade with the Jets or Denver - but they're not going outside the top 6

Just MHO

This would be a nightmare scenario. If these balloon heads get their pick of QBs, they’re 100% taking Josh Allen.
