Report: Jets Standing Firm on Seferian-Jenkins Offer

With free agency about to get under way, it looks as if Mike Maccagnan and the Jets are playing hardball with one of their own pending free agents in tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins.

The team reportedly offered Seferian-Jenkins $8 million over two years at the conclusion of the 2017 season but the tight end turned it down in hopes of getting the Jets to come up to the $6-7 million per year mark.  So far, the Jets have reportedly stayed at the same number they offered months ago.

Jets beat writer Connor Hughes is reporting that the Jets haven’t budged, which should increase the likelihood of his departure.  As it turns out, Seferian-Jenkins is starting to visit teams who are showing an interest.

Time will tell if the Jets approach is right with Seferian-Jenkins, but in viewing his production last season (357 yds, 3 TD’s), it’s hard to fault the team for refusing to pay more than what they believe he’s worth.

The one caveat however, is that Seferian-Jenkins played a career-high 653 snaps and went from Josh McCown to Bryce Petty at quarterback late in the season.  Fatigue and poor quarterback play bout could have been a factors in his disappearance in the second half of the year when he hauled in just 24 receptions without a touchdown over the final 8 games of the season.

I'm glad to see they're playing hard ball with ASJ. Just because the guy sobered up, lost weight, and had a very below average season is no reason to pay him like a personal hero. He needs to realize his worth and understand he's got a long way to go before he'll ever be worth 7 million. Quite frankly, I doubt he gets any suitors for 7 million in FA.

Probable first-day-or-two-of-FA signing elsewhere, probably not worth the money we offered.

With that said, hope we have a plan B....

A plan B doesn't matter in this case. You can't let a diva that has an overinflated sense of value in himself to dictate terms on contracts. If it happens and he gets away with it, the other players will take notice and start pulling the same nonsense.

ASJ has good size and decent hands. That's about it. He's not a great route runner, he doesn't get great separation and he's not a very good blocker. And like I said, his hands are not great either. It's a bit unfair to say he has 'stone hands' but he's not a great receiving TE. IMO he's not even worth the money the Jets are already offering him. They only want him back b/c they think he can get better. Not sure that is true either.

Leggett has upside, is cheap and young. And the Jets can draft a TE or add a cheaper one in FA, or conversely, go after a high priced guy that is a legitimate upgrade. Hey, maybe even someone who can block!

Not worried at all about losing ASJ.

But I DO want to bring back Mo Claiborne if the price isn't ridiculous.

To me, this is NY impatience at this finest. It's why we're always wondering how other teams put it all together. We take this guy on, rehab his value then bitch about it. Yes, a good TE is going to run you 6-8 million. That's the way it is. Why not invest in our own? he's young FFS, lets see where next year goes.

Christ I hate this place sometimes.

What makes him a "good TE" in your opinion? I mean, he's been serviceable, but good? No, he's been decent and has a chance to be better. Let him earn it. For once we aren't going to overpay and you're complaining about it?

Because that ship didn't sail when Wilkerson got his deal then did nothing to earn it?

i agree.  Especially with the cap numbers going up each as well as salaries.  He's a good target for our new QB.

Oh no! How are we going to replace a TE that averages 7ypc and drops as many touchdowns as he catches!!!

Literally his best play last year was a touchdown that got called back because of that stupid fumble end zone rule

Scrub.

  • If a guy like ASJ is not persuaded to sign with the Jets for not necessarily top dollar, who else is?  Answer:  no one, until the Jets start drafting better.
  • Mac is not results oriented-he is process orientated.  He has Boards like this complaining about his drafting, and his has a 5th round cheap ASJ clone already on the roster.  How does it look for him to pay $7mm for ASJ, when he also needs a guy to block like Tomlinson (who I like alot).
  • Save the money on the TEs and make a run at Allen Robinson.  That is what I would do.
