Jets FA Corner Back Department

We obviously need 3 new CBs. Most likely will cut Skrine ($6 mil in cap savings) upon the signings of the third CB. Only guys we've been linked to are:

— Malcolm_Butler: Texans, Jets and Colts

Contract Prediction: Three Years, $34 Million with $18 Million Guaranteed

— Trumaine Johnson: Jets and Raiders among many interested teams.

Contract Prediction: Four Years, $52 Million with $34 Million Guaranteed.

Other names include:

  1. patriotsb_logo.gif Malcolm Butler, CB, Patriots. Age: 28. star.gifstar.gifstar.gifstar.gifhalfstar.gif
Malcolm Butler went from being an undrafted free agent out of West Alabama, to an unknown guy who made a huge play in a Super Bowl, to one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL. His transformation has been amazing, and he's only 28 in March. He deserves a huge contract.
  2. billsb_logo.gif E.J. Gaines, CB, Bills. Age: 26. star.gifstar.gifstar.gifhalfstar.gif
E.J. Gaines was terrific for the Bills as a Pro Bowl-caliber cover corner this past season. He'd be rated much higher than this if it weren't for his poor durability; he's missed 26 games in the past three seasons, including five in 2017.

  3. coltsb_logo.gif Rashaan Melvin, CB, Colts. Age: 28. star.gifstar.gifstar.gifhalfstar.gif
Rashaan Melvin came out of nowhere to become Indianapolis' top cornerback in 2017. Melvin doesn't have much of a track record of success, but he's only 28 and could continue to play well.
  4. bearsb_logo.gif Bryce Callahan (RFA), CB, Bears. Age: 26. star.gifstar.gifstar.gifhalfstar.gif
    Tendered by Bears (original)

Bryce Callahan is a skilled slot cornerback who has improved each year in the NFL. He's only 26, so he should continue to get better. He'll likely command a big contract in the near future.

  5. ramsb_logo.gif Trumaine Johnson, CB, Rams. Age: 28. star.gifstar.gifstar.gifhalfstar.gif
Trumaine Johnson suffered some sort of leg injury in Week 2 this season, and he was never really the same afterward. This past season was Johnson's worst in a while, but he's very talented and can rebound in 2018.
  6. Patrick Robinson, CB, Eagles. Age: 30. star.gifstar.gifstar.gifhalfstar.gif
Patrick Robinson has undergone an up-and-down career ever since being the 32nd-overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. This past season was the ultimate up, as Robinson was absolutely prolific. He was one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL, clamping down against everyone in coverage. Robinson perhaps is a late bloomer, though he'll turn 31 in September.

  7. bearsb_logo.gif Prince Amukamara, CB, Bears. Age: 26. star.gifstar.gifstar.gif
Prince Amukamara is very talented, but also extremely difficult to trust. He has played in just one full season throughout his 7-year career. He missed two games in 2017, but played very well otherwise.

  8. bearsb_logo.gif Kyle Fuller, CB, Bears. Age: 26. star.gifstar.gifstar.gif
    Transition tagged by Bears

Kyle Fuller has frustrated Bears fans, playing well at times, but struggling mightily in many games. Chicago understandably declined his fifth-year option, but Fuller finally put it together in 2017 with a strong season. The former first-round pick is just 26 (in February) and can still continue to improve.

  9. bengalsb_logo.gif Darqueze Dennard, CB, Bengals. Age: 26. star.gifstar.gifstar.gif
Darqueze Dennard had been seen as a failure heading into 2017, which made it odd that Cincinnati exercised his fifth-year option in April. The move paid off, as Dennard was excellent this past season. Just 26, Dennard appears to have a bright future ahead of him, though it's a bit suspicious that he finally began playing well in his contract year.

First, let me just say that the 'Jets only want safeties' joke is dead and buried. Please let it RIP. It's SOOOOO lame at this point. GET OVER IT.

Ok.

So I think they will end up re-signing Claiborne. Which I think is good, b/c when healthy he played great. And I think the fact that he got hurt will actually give the Jets some bargaining power b/c it's unlikely he will get a lot of guaranteed money...anywhere.

I also think Burris needs to get more playing time and an opportunity to start across from Claiborne. I do expect the Jets to cut Skrine but I don't nec. think they NEED 3 FA CBs. Re-signing Claibore and bringing in one more mid level, young-ish CB is all they really need right now. I fully expect them to also address CB in the draft. Possibly even as early as one of their 2nd round picks.

Investing big money in 3 CBs would be incredibly short-sighted of the Jets.

Your right, the safety jokes can stop but it sounds like you want to bring the old cast back. Claiborne should be a last resort.

Burris?? No way should he see the field unless there's an injury.

Claiborne was rated 48.5 via PFF. Probably would fair better as a number two instead of a one.

I would say two of the three guys in Gaines, Butler and Johnson have to be sign. I love the CB, Ward from OSU, however in no way or form can we address the issue through the drafts with our other needs.

This team is striking out everywhere and/or not even swinging and you expect them to sign 2 of the top 3 CBs?  I see no chance of that.  I am sure they will sign 2 CBs, but at least one will be lower tier guy.  Surprised I am not hearing more about Bashaud Breeland.  He is not a top guy IMO, but I heard plenty of chatter about him to the Jets.  He is probably getting paid a ton more than I think he deserves, but whatever.  Breeland and Butler seem to be more outside guys you move inside to the slot, so that would mean Skrine getting cut.

Did that get us a discount on Mo?  Claiborne got $5M in 2017, he is getting more this time around.

I think it is very dangerous to expect much out of Juston  Burris.  I think he is slow and I think we used our 4th on a guy that aspires to the Darrin Walls level.

At this point we have the cap figure so I would hope we could. But there shouldn't be any optimism from any of us.
