Jets Looking to Move on From Bilal Powell?

Sometimes NFL rumors are just that…rumors.  But when several rumors are being floated simultaneously by different sources, you can’t help but wonder if there is some validity in the claims.

There’s no denying that this is pure speculation, but In regards to the Jets rumored targets in free agency, one thing that stands out is that the team is reportedly on the lookout for a running back who can do all of the same things Bilal Powell does.  This, as the running back approaches 30, and the team already having added Isaiah Crowell to their backfield.

Before coming to terms with the Tennessee Titans, the Jets were said to be very interested in running back Dion Lewis, who, like Powell is a shifty back who can block well and catch the ball out of the backfield.

Now this nugget from Jason La Canfora, who may be blowing smoke for all we know, but claiming the Jets are interested in Vikings free agent running back Jerick McKinnon.  Yet another back who does all of the things Powell does well, and this is of course with the Jets having just drafted Elijah McGuire, who has been favorably compared to Powell several times since coming to New York.

Powell is a fan favorite who has never really been given a shot to live up to his full potential and he’s been all class from the day he arrived, but as we all know, the NFL is a business, and it looks as if the Jets might be looking to do a bit of business in Powell’s neighborhood.

I have always been a Powell fan.  However, the last two years there have been rumblings and concerns about his durability.  He certainly does not figure into the picture two years from now.  I can see the interest in replacing him.

this team is flat out stupid, powell has been good for us.  Jerrik mackinon and crowell scare no one even if they are competent.  A draft loaded with talented backs and once again we ignore the position.

The way I see it, Macc probably knows that he might have to trade up to get his QB and surrender one, if not both, of those 2nd rounders.

Powell has been an underrated, quality performer for the Jets, but the guy is also going to be 30 years old in October and is headed into the last year of his deal.

The Jets may just want to go with more of a youth movement at the position without dedicating a premium pick.

My thoughts exactly.  Powell was underrated for years around here and always did his job well, but age is never kind to a RB more than any other position.  While it's strangely only been within the past 2 years people start talking about Powell supposedly not being given a full opportunity, it's actually been during that time that, whenever he's began to receive a heavier workload, injuries immediately started to pile up along with it.  Due to that, he's clearly better served in a committee, and there's nothing wrong with that, but as he gets older (and more expensive), it wouldn't surprise me that the Jets would be looking for his replacement.

i always love when these articles say that this player or that player was never given a shot to live up to potential.  what does this mean, anyway?  doesn't the player have a responsibility to make sure he does his part?  powell played well at times but at the same time he was always nicked up.  good guy and all that but he has to stay on the field to reach his potential.

The replies in this thread are actually embarrassing. He's literally the only player on offense who showed up all year in 2017

I loved what Powell brings to the jets, but McKinnon would have been a huge upgrade .

The idea that Bilal Powell is average and not special is ridiculous? Is that what you are saying?

Huge? No.. I can promise you that no one on this forum is more familiar with the former Georgia Southern RB/QB than myself. Jerick is not a 3-down dynamo and not a natural at the position. He's good, and brings a lot versatility - but he's not some kind of hidden gem. I've watched more McKinnon in MIN than i care to admit.

Interesting fact; McKinnon joins his successor Matt Brieda in SF... kind of fun little combo there.

No, and if you need to me walk you through the underlying point i was making -- then you're a member of the club i'm calling out.

SMH. He had the most rushing yards of his career last year. 772 yards. Earth shattering!

I get the sentimental value attached to him. He’s a good guy as well. But talent wise, he’s nothing more than an average RB turning 30 this year. RB is literally the only skill position you can churn via draft without handing a 2nd contract. It’s where you wanna take your late round swing at yearly and hope to get a guy like Hunt every 3-4 years.

Get younger.

And you know this is true based on what?

Plus who does Powell scare?  Other than whichever team counts on him

I get it. Nothing you're saying is untrue... but Powell isn't a throwaway. It's a long season and it's a battle of attrition. Powell's got a part to play -- at least as things stand right now.

Agreed. A team with so many holes doesn’t need to create another one. Neither Crowell or the never happened McKinnon were clear upgrades. To Forte? Sure. To Powell? Not really.

Okay, so you quoted someone calling Bilal Powell an average player and called that statement ridiculous and it's my job to find the SUBTEXT?

Here's an idea: Flesh out your thoughts.

ESPN just gave the 49ers and (F) in FA for signing Jerrick McKinnon.

Hardly seems an upgrade on Powell, his rushing numbers aren't good last two years.

$30 mill 4 years deal no thanks..
