Team’s Holes

Areas that needed improvements and how they have been addressed, or not. Will update as things happen.

Already addressed

QB = Josh McCown (neutral-same player)

QB = Teddy Bridgewater (upgrade over Petty/Hackenberg)

ILB = Avery Williamson (upgrade over Demario Davis)

RB1= Isaiah Crowell (upgrade over Matt Forte)

CB1= Trumaine Johnson (upgrade over Morris Claiborne)

CB2 = Morris Claiborne (upgrade over Burris/Roberts/etc)

C = Spencer Long (upgrade over Wesley Johnson)

S = Terrence Brooks (neutral - good backup/versatility)

WR = Terrelle Pryor (upgrade - starter and insurance for Enunwa/Anderson)

WR = Enunwa (neutral - completely unknown based on serious neck injury)

TE = Neal Sterling (neutral - backup level with potential)

SS = Rontez Miles (neutral - good depth)

OL = Brent Qvale (neutral -good depth/versatility)

K = Cairos Santos (replacing Chandler Catanzaro)

DE = Xavier Cooper (neutral - returning player)

OLB = Brandon Copeland (depth)

OLB = Kevin Pierre Louis (depth)

WR/KR = Andre Roberts (upgrade - return man)

OT = Benjamin Ijalana (neutral - Oline depth)

DT = Mike Pennel (neutral - Dline depth)

———

Left over positions needing a starting-caliber player

QB1 = ? (Josh McCown)

(#3 pick in the Draft)

TE1 = ? (ASJ)

(Draft pick? Looks like we will be seeing what we can get out of Leggett/Sterling/Tomlinson)

OLB = ? (Jonathan Martin?)

(Draft pick? This spot is likely between Josh Martin/Kevin Pierre-Louis/Brandon Copeland)

RB = ?

(The team could use a third down back younger than Powell and with more upside than McGuire)

Looks like we have approximately 50M left. 10 of which would likely be reserved for rookies

Left over positions

CB2 = ?  (Burris/Roberts/etc)

(Would love Claiborne back in easier role - 8M?)

WR = ? (Insurance for Anderson/Replacement for Enunwa)

(Please get me Jordan Matthews - 8M?)

TE1 = ? (ASJ)

(Take a chance on Tyler Eifert - 7M?)

DE2 = ? (Muhammad Wilkerson)

(Would be very excited if Daquon Jones is signed - 8M?)

OLB = ? (Jonathan Martin?)

(Trent Murphy perhaps - 7M?)

te1 could be one of the guys already on the team or they could draft 1.  same thing with cb2.  burris doesn't seem to be much more than a backup.  same thing with roberts but if they don't re-sign claiborne then they could draft one.

I dont agree that williamson is an upgrade over demario davis, he played around 600 snaps ... demario didnt miss a single snap... Avery was only a 2 down lb

Avery was close in PFF Rankings, and is 3 years younger. I believe it to be an upgrade.

I dont know much about Williamson. Im looking up some of his game tape that I can find but base on his stats he seems to be a poor man's version of Davis...atleast statisically.

To see the jets sign Williamson to 22.5 million with 16 guaranteed yet let Davis, a guy who had a probowl-esque year walk and he just signed with the saints for 24 million and 18 million guaranteed is the level of business pettiness I cant stand about this front office.

Unless it was a situation where Davis refused to play for this team (which wouldnt be a surprise) I dont understand how this happened. It's hard to call Williamson an upgrade just looking at the stats.

Crowell is not an RB1. He’s an RB2 in a RBBC and not a really great one. The Jets still have no lead back.

Yeah. I agree with you. The RB1/2 etc are outdated. I think Crowell can carry the load on 1st and 2nd. In that sense hes an RB1. Not that he is necessarily the more talented back. You can disregard the number, but its meant to say that he would be taking over for Forte

This is fair. Im not pretending to be an expert on either ILB.

However, I’m in favor of the youth. Williamson is touted as a very good player in his own right.

Offensive line is our biggest hole right now.  I'd like to see us come out of the remainder of FA and the draft with 3 viable offensive linemen

If we go into the season with 9 offensive linemen, right now we have 4

Beachum
Winters
Shell
Long

Assuming we keep Qvale, that's 5, maybe Carpenter will come back and be 6

We still need 3 competent NFL offensive linemen - maybe 1 Free agent, 1 2nd round pick, and a late round pick

Huh? The line is set, for now. Not that its particularly good or anything. But 4 out of 5 starters last year are under contract. Then there’s Long to play center in place of Johnson. There’s room for improvement and depth of course but i wouldnt say holes necessarily

Need to draft 2 lineman within first 3 rounds. Are line is in terrible shape. Would love Nelson at 6.

Just MO, but the tea leaves suggest they're going to backfill with another post-rnd 3 rookie, a COP/3rd down type.

In fairness to Macdumbass, if Davis had this deal with NO on the table, and was shopping it around to see if he could get more, the Jets would have to beat it not match it. And they'd have to beat it by enough of a margin that NO wouldn't just re-up over the Jets' offer again. Even still, there's no evidence he signed one over the other purely because of a $1m/year discrepancy. Not when they're overpaying or offering to overpay left & right on the likes of unwanted Josh McCown $10m and in outbidding $15-16m offers for WRs who've done nothing since their injuries and a $14m guard.

We'll soon see in real time what Williamson is, what he isn't, and what Davis plays like in NO after sitting on 18 million "no matter what" dollars. Davis had exactly 1 really good season in his 6-year career. Nobody wept when the Browns signed him in 2016 at $4m per (before that cash-rich, talent-poor team decided to make the $4m Davis a cap casualty). He knew his value was so low he accepted a $3m pay cut to $1m last year...from the Jets. This doesn't paint the picture of a player who plays at a high level after being rewarded, or whom we should expect to play like 2017 for the next 2-3 seasons.

I'd be content if we sign Eifert to an incentive deal where he can make up to 10 if he plays the whole season. I think the Honey Badger could make this defense scary if we can also draft a solid pass rusher.

Wide Receiver is a must address position for the reasons you listed. Sign one and draft one in round 4 or something.

Most important piece is the QB obviously. If Mac loves one of these guys and he's there at 3 then do what you must to get him.

This is Primarily why I like dealing with you. Even during the times that I disagree with you, you support your position and take into account other scenarios as well in an attempt for folks to see that side, not just for you to be correct.

Good point Sperm. I didnt think of this.

I would love to see Johnson and Claiborne as our 1 and 2 CBS. Is there anyway Macc can make that happen? Why hasn't Skrine been cut yet??
