MDL_JET
3. Jets’ flight plan. The Jets absolutely wanted Cousins, and probably worse than anyone else did. But if you go back a few months, you’ll see that he wasn’t initially Plan A for the team. A few months back, the idea for 2017 was to strip down the team, rely on young guys, and get a Top 2 or 3 pick to spend on a quarterback. And this wasn’t just on paper, either. At the urging of ownership, the Jets’ personnel department sunk an absolute ton of resources into kicking the tires on all the college quarterbacks last fall. New York had a scout at just about every UCLA, USC, Wyoming, Oklahoma and Louisville game in 2017, and did all the background you can imagine on Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Baker Mayfield and Lamar Jackson. So what changed? Two things. First, the Jets’ young core, particularly on defense, got feisty early, and a three-game winning at the September/October turn doomed the idea that the team would be able to keep up with the likes of Cleveland and the Giants in the race for the first pick. Second, quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates impressed enough to earn a promotion to coordinator just as a signal-caller proven in his system, Cousins, was set to come free. Remember, Bates is a disciple of Mike Shanahan, just as Cousins and his two favorite play-callers (Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay) are. So add the early-season surge to Bates’ rise, and you had a team with the sixth pick that could try and get a proven quarterback, which would free it up to use its draft capital to build on last year’s transformational offseason. That’s how they drew it up, anyway. Now? Well, they move forward with the information they need—and I expect we’ll see Top 30 visits and on-campus workouts with the top quarterbacks here, too—on the quarterbacks, and less flexibility with their picks, particularly if they need to trade up. It’s not ideal, and it didn’t feel good for anyone there this week. But with Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater in the fold as “for now” answers, they can move forward with what they’d set out to do in the first place, and that’s take one high in April. If that was the plan, why not play Petty and Hack you idiots! Can never do anything right.

MDL_JET
Also I really don't understand this sentiment that one of the top QBs are unattainable via trading up. This is bouncing off KRL's post as well. We're at f'n 6....not 12,18, 22.....we're 3-4 spots back! If it's realistic for any of the teams behind us, there should be no excuse for the Jets. Stop being a bitch Mac. I don't wanna hear this bullsh*& that Lamar Jackson is the favorite because he's attainable. Gimme a break. Stop settling. usanyj
Should have given hack and petty 8 games each. Goal is to win the super bowl...you weren't winning the super bowl with mccown and that team. may as well have just benched mccown. I have said it for a while...if we get none of the top qbs...2017 will be a year we look back on and say was one of the worst years in jets history because of what it brought, or lack thereof

Stop being a bitch Mac. it is true, the jets have less flexibility than if they were in the top 4. but they can still trade up for a qb. you have to wonder how much discussion about trading up occurred at the combine, and whether mccags already realizes that it would compromise the rest of day 2. whether that means they'll consider jackson at 6 or if mccags is finally ready to go 'all in', we have 6 weeks to go for that. RESNewYork
Cimini was on the radio yesterday. According to him, when he was at the combine, he was told the plan was to sign cousins. But that the backup plan was to sign a package of McCown and Bridgewater and then draft a QB. Cimini said there was a backup plan because it didn't seem likely that Cousins was going to sign. Hence the raise for McCown and the assurance he's the starter and the promotion of Bates. These ****tards actually think the arrow is point up. So much so they're going to punt on a QB at#6 and ride or die with Josh McCown because he's Todd's favorite player ever and he's got great chemistry with Bates. They think they're a playoff team because of Josh McCown.

Basically, plan A was never really a plan because they never actually believed it could happen. So plan B was the real plan and it was a plan nobody in their right ******* mind would touch. T0mShane
The optimistic reading of this is that the Jets brain trust gave up on a months-long plan to tank for a quarterback because they thought they could use Jeremy Bates as bait to lure Kirk Cousins here, but he roster is so awful because of the previously mentioned tanking effort that Cousins wouldn’t even give them a courtesy interview. Ghost
This got to be the dumbest thing I’ve heard since Hail Betty Clinton. If that’s the case, start Hack. Duhhhh. UntouchableCrew
None of this is new information. They screwed up the tank because McCown played better than anyone dreamed and then we lost a bunch of close games. Of course they were interested in Cousins -- now that they didn't land him we're still going to draft a QB. This is only a disaster if they're unwilling to do everything in their power to make sure we get the right guy. Sitting at 6 and hoping an acceptable option (or any of the top 4) are still there could doom them. Go get the best possible guy, no matter what. (This could also be a disaster if Maccagnan's "Hackenberg" player evaluation leads him to believe the worst guy is the best guy. Should include that.) Beerfish
Just another non educated article from national media. The jets did not win nary a game due to ts young feisty defense. The team went out and got two vet WRs just before the season in kerley and kearse. The jets played mccown until he got hurt. There was ZERO tanking going on. An if that was the strat then the jets as usual screwed it up.

The guy is awful, as far from a head coach as Bruce Coslet was. Coslet had about 10 All Pros out of 11 on the Cincy Offense. After being fired by the Jets he was never close to being considered for another head coaching job. But this is what you get when you’re too cheap to pay for a real Head Coach. You get a coordinator who is totally overrated due to the unit he coached (when that teams GM should get all the credit), many times. I saw a post awhile ago where someone analyzed the 10 QBs drafted during Maccagnan’s tenure in Houston....ALL Garbage. Just for my own edification, if anyone knows of any attributes or successes Maccagnan had PRIOR to being given the Jet GM job I’d really like to hear about them. I was actually excited when he was hired because of the scouting background, I thought that finally we’ll have someone making decisions who has an eye for talent. But after seeing his first 3 drafts, it’s no exaggeration to say anyone could close their eyes and throw darts at a summary of players eligible to be drafted.....and do BETTER.
