Texans sign safety Tyrann Mathieu to 1-year, $7M deal

The Texans have added another playmaker for their star-studded defense.

Houston has signed former Cardinals defensive back Tyrann Mathieu, the team announced Friday night. The deal is for one year at $7 million, reports NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, via a source informed of the situation.

Mathieu was released Wednesday by the Cardinals after balking at the idea of a pay cut from the $19 million he was due to collect under a five-year, $62.5 million contract signed in 2016.

Just last week, Mathieu told NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal that his agent believed he could collect even more money in free agency. That turned out to be wishful thinking in a depressed safety market. Instead, Mathieu will gamble on his ability to reclaim 2015 All Pro form in Houston and hit the open market again in 2019.

New general manager Brian Gaine has done well to target his two problem areas -- offensive line and secondary -- in the opening days of free agency. In addition to Mathieu, he has re-signed veteran Johnathan Joseph and imported former Jaguars cornerback Aaron Colvin and ace special teamer Johnson Bademosi to his defensive backfield.

Among the league's most versatile and instinctive ball hawks when healthy, Mathieu has the potential to transform the back end of Romeo Crennel's defense. Although he started slowly last season on the heels of a disappointing 2016 performance, the 25-year-old finally regained his playmaking ability down the stretch, excelling in November and December.

Mathieu is the rare defensive back capable of playing safety and cornerback, covering top wideouts, behemoth tight ends and jitterbug running backs while also disrupting quarterbacks as a timely blitzer.

He will be eager to line up behind a front seven with the star power of three-time Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt, back-to-back Pro Bowler Jadeveon Clowney, edge rusher Whitney Mercilus and the promising inside-linebacker tandem of Benardrick McKinney and Zach Cunningham.

With Watt and Mercilus returning from major injuries and Mathieu entering the mix as an intriguing wild card, Crennel's defense stands as one of the NFL's most intriguing mysteries. If that talented trio plays up to its potential, this unit can match or even exceed the Texans defense that finished No. 1 for the first time in 2016.

Im not gonna lose sleep over this.  We have bigger holes to fill.  Outside of the secondary do you realize this roster is void of talent?   Is there even one player on the team that would be a #1 pick in an expansion draft?

Good question.  Doesn't seem like much left on the market.  I think they have around 35 mil free now.

Not sure how much they can carry over this year.  But it seems like they're trying to keep cap room.  The Johnson deal averages 15 mil per season, yet it's structured to only be a 10 mil cap hit this year.  Why bother if they aren't going to spend this year?

Maybe they know someone else is going to be released soon?

Look the guy never said he was interested in the Jets.  For all we know we may have offered him more money and he declined. Until things change for the Jets culture and success expect more of this week.

Until then embrace the suck

I wouldn't have minded signing the guy, but some of you are acting like this is the end of the world.  Personally, when I got over the initial hype, I was kinda "meh" on whether or not we should sign him.  Now?  I'm kind of relieved that we didn't.  Looking at some tape and his numbers, its clear that he wasn't the same player last year, he got devastatingly hurt (again) and, quite frankly, isn't the best fit as a pure slot corner.  Even if he was, at this point it's not even definitive as to whether or not he is a surefire upgrade over Buster (who I don't have any love for) in that regard.

Either use the money somewhere else or just let it roll into next season and start focusing on the draft.

True, unlike Cousins. Dude was hashtagging the Jets every day leading up to free agency yet couldn't even make a visit.

Thats Hardcore trolling right there.

Agreed Mogglez, i’m actually far happier we got Claiborne back.....in the grand scheme of things that may be the less sexy, more under the radar, but far more significant move.

I’m impressed that we added a true No1 corner and arguably the best player available in FA in Trumaine Johnson and still brought back the guy who was our No1 CB last year, this time to be a No2. Skrine is and always has been a slot guy, he gets shown up when he has to play outside but in 2015 when we had Revis and Cromartie on the outside he actually played pretty well.

we still have a handful of intriguing young players who get the opportunity to show they are future starter material and we might still add a draft pick in the middle rounds if the right player is available.

I’m ok with this secondary without HB....we now desperately need to add a proper game—changing edge rusher which is likely going to have way more impact and create a lot more big plays than Tyrann Mathieu was going to be expected to do on his own

His agent ****ed him. You can't tell your 25 year old 2 time busted ACL client to refuse a multi year restructure because he'll get more on the open market and then only get him a one year $7 million dollar show me deal. You've got to do your homework. Make some behind the scenes phone calls. And at least have an understanding of your client's market value. My God you're a ******* professional agent and your client relies on you.   That guy is so fired.

And does anyone else see the irony of him signing with a team that ritually loses big time D players to devastating injuries every season?

We will be reminded how much we could have used Tyrann Mathieu as soon as Buster Skrine commits his first of many penalties this upcoming season.

Or when he blows his knee out again.

Total whiff by Macc

cut Skrine/ hire honey badger-no brainer

our front office has its head up its ass

Do you think the job is that simple?  Do you really think that Mac couldn't/wouldnt pay 1 year and $8 million given our roster and need for a slot playmaker?

The issue is Bowles and the daughter in law.  Thats a complicated thing and probably why we didnt do it.  Sucks, but i can't blame Mac for this one

I suggested we go after Mathieu, but looking at what he got from HOU
it's obvious the Jets didn't feel the same way.  We have more than
enough cap space to beat that offer, so the team must believe Mathieu's
play is on the decline.  Good luck to him, we need to fill out the rest
of our roster

This has to be part of the reason, could be family issues or since Bowles is on thin ice and it would have been uncomfortable watching it crash and burn up close - plus Kacy is the DC so that could be an issue too

or Mac and Bowles are working in silos / against each other and the end is near

Either way this deal and the AJ deal with Bills (2yr $10m) shows some cracks in the Jets FA plan (who else thinks Josh is worth double AJ on the FA market?)  AJ McCarron vs Teddy Bridgewater might have been fun to watch in camp, Thanks Mac
