Report: Johnny Manziel to throw at University of San Diego pro day Thursday

Johnny Manziel is trying to reboot his football career. On Thursday he’ll have a chance to throw in front of several scouts that could help make that pursuit a reality.

According to Bruce Feldman of Sports Illustrated, Manziel will be the quarterback throwing to receivers at the pro day workouts at the University of San Diego on Thursday morning.

Underclassmen can’t throw for pro day workouts so graduating prospects and former players are the typical players called upon to throw during the workouts if a quarterback isn’t a part of the school’s pro hopefuls. Manziel hasn’t played in a NFL game since December 2015.

Manziel has seemingly cleaned up his off-field problems and is trying to make another go of a career in football. He signed on to play in The Spring League, but the deal has an out-clause if he were to get signed to an NFL roster. The chance to throw in front of scouts on Thursday could spark a renewed interest if teams feel he’s gotten his issues under control.

Even so, it’s a long way for Manziel to go to find himself back in the running to play in the NFL. However, Thursday might present the opportunity to clear one of many hurdles standing in his way.

Now, were I a mobile quarterback banished from the NFL for any reason, I’d go to the CFL and try to rehabilitate my career as much as possible, which might satisfy a bunch of questions about any off-field concerns people would have about me. I don’t see how creeping around the periphery trying to get people to take pictures of me throwing footballs into trash cans would influence anyone.

Todd Bowles: "Sign that trash can, he's catching EVERYTHING" :D

Ive never understood why guys dont do this, whats wrong with the CFL?  You would think with their rules manziel would tear it up there.

The pay probably sucks.  The CFL doesn't release salaries (big surprise there), but from the info available, the most any player has ever made was QB Ricky Ray, at $400,000 per season.

And the process of getting a Canadian work permit is a real b*tch.

Yeah, but both Manziel and Kaepernick already had money. Going up there and kicking ass would have put some pressure on the NFL to bring them back, I’d think.

Do they?

Manziel probably blew all his money.

Kaepernick gives away a TON of money to charitable causes.

2 teams called "Rough Riders" causes mass confusion. Other than that, all true. Didn't hurt Warren Moon, Doug Flutie and many others at several positions. If Manziel wants to play if the NFL he has to demonstrate he can act like an adult for a full season.

So very much this.  Kid needs to shut up and then put up (in the CFL) and then see what his opportunities in the NFL are.

One wonders if Warren Moon were around today as a player, would he have gone to the CFL (which led directly to him being in the NFL) or would he have done what Manziel is doing now....

I wish him the best of luck. If he truly has his mind right then he deserves a shot. Ive never liked continuously hanging something over someone's head as if only a few make mistakes.

If he's focused give him a shot.

I don't think a team will ever take a chance on him. He needs to just stay out of trouble and go to the CFL. If he can go up there and play really well, take it seriously while he's up there, then maybe a team would give him a chance.

But I don't think throwing to underclassmen at Pro days is going to get him a serious look. If I was a GM i'd want to see him go to a team (CFL) and actually put in the work and perform well in games.

Haha I have no interest in living there.  My sister just had to go through the process of getting a work permit, and was basically detained at the airport for like 6 hours waiting for her boss to vouch for her, lol.

You guys are a bit harsh.

He could go to the CFL or not, but throwing in front of NFL scouts is always a plus.  More importantly, he can talk to them there and they can decide if he looks like he has matured or has a hang over.

I'm not sure why people are acting like teams were there to see him.  More likely they were there for Penny or Kelly.  Or maybe Bawden the QB turned FB that couldn't run at the combine.  It's a free opportunity for Manziel and maybe he could do something for one of these kids as a bonus.
