Top College QB "Signature" games.

I've made this thread because I wanted to show games from each of the top QB's that can be considered "Signature Games". These are games where the performance shown throughout that particular game can be pointed to and can be said that "This is what this QB can bring to the table". Below are a few of the "Signature Games" that I feel resonated with me to where I can see this as a positive representation of what this guy could bring to the team at the professional level.

Josh Rosen:

UCLA vs Texas A&M (The Comeback).

This is a signature game not just because of the comeback, not just because it was UCLA's biggest comeback since 2006, not just because he's coming back from a season-ending injury the year prior, but this is the same Texas A&M team that they seen week 1 the year prior (2016) that they lost to in overtime, but more importantly, Rosen had a horrible game throwing for 343 yards and a TD...but also threw 3 INT's. This loss started out UCLA's season 0-1 in 2016 and ultimately the Bruins were  looking like a mediocre team at 3-3 when Rosen got hurt and was done for the season. There were ALOT of concerns surrounding Josh Rosen's health and ability. Week 1 of 2017 UCLA once again plays Texas A&M, and Rosen's first game back from last year season ending injury he leads one of the best comebacks in UCLA history throwing for 500 yards, 4 TD's and 0INT's, in a game that showed Rosens ability to completely demoralise a defense because they simply couldn't stop him, though the UCLA Bruins were down 10-44 with just over 2 minutes left in the 3rd qtr.. This was Rosen's "Signature Game".

Sam Darnold:

USC vs Penn State (The Rose Bowl)

This is the game that put Sam Darnold's name on the map and in future mock drafts of all of us amateur GM's. This is the game that made "Sam Darnold" a household name. This is the same year that at the beginning of the Season USC wasn't even sure who their QB was. Sam Darnold was splitting reps Max Browne and getting blown out by the likes of Alabama 52-6 to open the season, giving USC their worst opening day loss in franchise history. Darnold would go on to split reps with Browne for 2 more games before being given the keys week 4 against Utah. The Trojans are 1-2 on the season and Darnold & USC lose to Utah in a close one. USC is now 1-3 on the season and they're moving forward with a Redshirt Freshman and USC is still not even sure if this kid has the goods. Then "It....happened". Sam Darnold goes on that legendary stretch where he tears up all of the competition laid in front of him, averaging 3TD's per game while completing no less than 62.5% of his passes...winning his way to a Rosebowl appearance. Sam is to face RB Saquan Barkley and QB Trace McSorley, the same QB that proved that the coach wasn't the problem, Hackenberg was (That's a different topic). Well, Not only did USC win this game, but it became an instant Classic and put Sam Darnold's name in the mouth of every NFL fan and GM looking for a QB and immediately propelled him as the #1. projected QB heading into the 2017 season. This is Sam Darnold's "Signature Game".

Baker Mayfield:

Oklahoma vs Oklahoma St. (Season is on the line)

This was a game that seemed to be set up perfectly when it came to storyline. Oklahoma vs Oklahoma St, both teams in the top 25 (Sooners #8, Cowboys #11), both QB's were Heisman finalists, Big 12 Championship elimination game, College playoff elimination game....and of course they're State rivals. Oklahoma has owned the Big 12 division, winning the Big 12 championship every year that Mayfield was the QB (2015 & 16) This year seemed like Mason Rudolph and the Cowboys were legitimate threats to ending that run as both entered this game with just 1 loss, trying to earn a playoff spot, as well as cement each team's respective QB as the Heisman winner for the 2017 season. To put it plainly, the game ended up being an instant classic. Both Mayfield and Rudolph showed up in this game, the game produced 114 combined points and over 1,400 total yards. Insane. Baker Mayfield edged out his rival team and Heisman finalist by throwing for a school record 598 yards, as well as leading an offense that put up 785 total yards...their 2nd highest total since 1988. Mayfield also threw for 5 TD's. However, Mayfield did this while on the road in a hostle environment against a State Rival, a conference Rival and a Hesiman finalist in order to keep Oklahoma's Big 12 championship and Playoffs alive....This performance by Mayfield all but sealed his Heisman award for 2017. This is Baker Mayfield's "Signature game".

Josh Allen:

Wyoming vs Central Michigan (Idaho Potato bowl)

Honestly, it was hard for me personally to find a "Signature Game" for Josh Allen. He's 0-3 against Power 5 teams (Nebraska, Oregon and Iowa) and I really couldn't find a game that I could point two that shows what this guy is about and what he could bring to the Jets. Now im not saying that he couldn't bring anything, he obviously has potential and all the measurements, but it seems like the only thing that I could find is his last collegiate game where he was able to win a bowl game before leaving Wyoming. This game does of course flash his elite arm talent, and like in every game he does have that "one throw" that is just unbelievable (0:32 second mark). He finished the game completing 58% of his throws for 154 yards and 3TD's I cant really consider this a "Signature Game" but simply his "most important game" given that it's technically a bowl game.

I come away from this feeling like I can see legit reasons for the jets spending a #3 pick on either Darnold, Rosen or Mayfield given that each QB in their own unique way showed a level of greatness on the Collegiate level that a GM may be willing to take a chance on at the #3 pick. With Allen however, can anyone show me that level of greatness, that "signature moment" that could kinda bring a few of us who are skeptical on this kid around so we could see something that isnt just about the subjective aspect of things (Potential, Upside)?

I've been presented by two different posters Josh Allens Senior Bowl Highlights...but this is essentially an Allstar game where players on both sides for the most part have never played together but are training together for a couple weeks for evaluation purposes and to play in an Allstar game that doesn't display the type of intensity as Championship/Playoff/Bowl games typically display. This isnt to discredit Allen, he did what he had to do, but if that's the case then should we come away as Kyle Lauletta being the best QB? I mean, 99% of us only found out who that kid was while watching this very game. However,...the kid has put together some fine stats showing that he's clearly above the competition that he was playing against...which is typical of possible NFL level talent playing in lower level college conferences. Kyle Lauletta threw 29 passes, completed 90% of his passes, threw for 321 yards and 6 TD's against a Howard football team this season. That's ridiculous.

Where is Josh Allen's Signature game/moment that we can point to?

Lol if you don’t drop 50 on Oklahoma St. you get kicked out of the Big 12.

The Ohio St. game is much more relevant for this topic.

It's kinda concerning that Allen's signature game is an every-other-week game for the rest.

Pretty much. His most important game he threw for 3 TD's while Darnold averaged 3 TD's per game during his epic freshman run and Baker Mayfield threw for 2 or more TD's in 34 straight games.....that covers 3 seasons.

But, those measurements bro.

Thanks Villian, fun thread.  Well, that's why I'm good with any of these guys.  Prefer Mayfield, but I'll be happy with any

Thank you. I figured this would be a great way through performance a good reason to draft particular players and why folks like particular players. Everyone has their favourite, but the top 3 players have all shown something worthy of taking a look at.

There are only 2 top players at the QB position, and neither of them are Baker Mayfield don’t kid yourself.  You want to put up moments from Baker, and the rest separate to compare fine, but he does not belong in the same breath as Darnold, and Rosen everyone needs to just stop.

Take away Allen’s combine and he’d be behind Jackson.

Take the media hype machine and he'd be behind Jackson too. It doesnt mean that he wont make it in the NFL but everything were supposed to be excited about has nothing to do with jn game performance. Thats a problem for me.

Jackson may have the toughest issue when translating his game to the NFL given that he did alot of running, but "the highest ceiling goes to Allen" talk is a but much for me also. If Jackson translates to the NFL He'll be a massive problem to deal with given his skillset. Vick/Cunningham 2.0. Folks forget what a guy in Vick did to this league before going to jail, specifically to defensive coordinators.

If Jackson is on that level he'll be scary. If Allen gains some anticipation and accuracy while adding more to his short and intermediate game he will be a franchise qb and future HOF...but he has to develop thag because he tape hasn't shown that on a consistent level

Great job. Thanks for the analysis and film on each QB

Take away Allen’s combine and he’d be behind Jackson.

This always makes me curious.  The biggest knock on Allen?  His 56.2% completion rate.  Jackson?  57.0% completion rate (although it did improve each year to 59% in 2017).  Given Allen's immense upside as a passer vs. Jackson's multi-threat ability, I'm not so sure.  It wasn't like anyone had Jackson ahead of Allen *before* the combine.

so why are you not doing all these posts and threads on Jackson. Why didn't the Jets stay at 6, draft Jackson, and use our second rounders to add more talent. WHY!

I like Rosen,  but the knock on Allen is his performance against big time schools. But can't we also be skeptical of Rosen's inability to take his team to the next level. UCLA with Rosen was a middling school. Either due to his play or his injuries.

If you are judging players based on their success in College only Darnold and Mayfield took their teams to the next level. Darnold took a sinking ship in USC in 2016 and took them on a ride to a Rose Bowl win over Penn State. Mayfield of course took Oklahoma to within a game of the national title game.

Rosen's signature performance was against  Texas A&M team that gave up 43 to Arkansas, 45 to LSU and 55 to Wake Forest. We never really saw Rosen come up big in a big game.

I am not bashing Rosen or Allen (will be happy with either), just saying that depending on the metric you use to judge these QBs the clear cut winner changes. It's what will make this draft so interesting.

Because im not the only one who can produce content to talk about. If you want to see more Jackson content then contribute some to the conversation. As for the second question....there's no answer for that question. Im the wrong person to ask.
